Hungary's rawest nerve: Learning to love the Roma | Politics.hu

Only the most violent extremists actually spell it out, but somewhere in the debate in Hungary lurks the ugly sentence, ??They kill us so we kill them.?

Tit for tat ? the recipe for ethnic war.

But their own experience can help Hungarians understand the difference between ordinary crime and hate crime ? like when people in Romania or Slovakia or Serbia, are attacked just because they speak Hungarian in the street.

Iterations: How Six Technology Investors Size Up The Google Glass ...

Editor?s Note: Semil Shah is a contributor to TechCrunch. You can follow him on Twitter at @semil.

People won?t stop talking about Google Glass, and rightfully so. Ever since the epic parachute-hangout demo, the Valley has been buzzing about the future coming of what is arguably one of the biggest potential advancements in computer interfaces since the iPhone. Lately, the buzz has been bubbling as Google employees, early adopters (Scoble just posted his detailed review), tech bloggers, and contest winners have started to receive their glasses, combined with heavy, consumer-focused advertising, a dedicated fund pairing Google?s own venture arm with two of Sand Hill?s most storied venture capital firms. It?s gotten so much ink that new monikers have emerged, such as ?Glasshole,? and the phenomenon was hilariously lambasted in the latest installment of ?Jesus Christ, Silicon Valley,? a Tumblr devoted to over-the-top yet oftentimes valid tech-focused satire.

There?s so much to investigate with respect to Glass, so in this week?s ?Iterations? column, I?m just going to focus on the early-stage investment side. There?s no shortage of opinions here. My two cents is while Google is investing lots of dollars into a consumer-focused campaign, Glass will not initially be a device that the majority people will want, need, or be able to afford (unlike a cell phone), even when the price comes down. It will also be a very different type of interface. That said, it?s no matter, because the commercial applications for Glass are boundless: Imagine a bunch of kids on a school trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, able to press on Glass and learn more about the sea life they see in the tanks. Well, I don?t even know if that?s possible on a watery service, but regardless?instead, I emailed a handful of experienced technology investors I know well to briefly weigh on how they think of Glass as an interface to invest in and around. Below is a collection of the answers I received, edited briefly:

Bill Lee is a serial entrepreneur, currently working on a mobile app, Twist. He?s also a well-known angel investor and LP in the Valley, and also sat down with me ?In The Studio? earlier this year:

I?m skeptical that GG will get mass adoption. As someone that grew up with glasses, I couldn?t wait until I got LASIK/corrective eye surgery. I just can?t see myself wearing glasses again voluntarily (no disrespect to fashion icon NBA basketball players such as Lebron James wearing hipster glasses). While I don?t think there will be mass adoption, I do see several niche markets springing up. For example, people that really need glasses (elderly, jewelers, surgeons, etc.) should derive tremendous benefit from GG applications. I haven?t seen any GG pitches yet, but I expect to see several this year. As with all investments, I?d put more emphasis on finding the right team than needing to be the first in the space. If GG takes off, there should be ample room for a great team to innovate even if they aren?t first. ? Bill Lee

Matt Ocko is a partner with Data Collective and one of the most selective seed-stage technology investors in the Valley:

In five years, it?s not about Google Glass per se, which is a brave but still early evolutionary step, but how dependent everyday people will become on certain types of ubiquitous but non-intrusive tech. ?Specifically, tech that has to be amazingly powerful and sophisticated to achieve that very non-intrusiveness in the first place. A great example ? and I think, the more interesting story ? is speech recognition, which of necessity is a big part of Glass. Whether it?s in every car via a service arrangement with Apple and Google competing with each other to be the backend, or in lightweight smart earphones that can be left in for one or more days, or in Google Glass-like glasses, always-on listening with deep, smart taxonomies will be a fact of life ? i.e., near total adoption by the middle classes of the G7 and beyond.

As an investor, I am looking for companies that presume the success of this kind of technology, then look at how they can apply equally profound compute and algorithmic innovations to transform different industries. For example, what do certain medical practices look like when the EMR/EHR platform is listening in on doctors and nurses, and has something like IBM Watson behind it, watching for missed diagnoses (e.g., sepsis in a hospital), mis-medication, or even malpractice? What does CRM look like when a salesperson?s or customer service rep?s efficacy can be analyzed in real-time from their conversation with a customer? ?If the video appurtenance to GG?s ?speech recognition delivery platform? (my own biased view) turns out to be important, then machine vision becomes the next huge ubiquitous technology (where Google already has an early lead), and we ask questions like ?what does the advertising targeting chain look like when every product in a store is lit up under live video scrutiny by the analog of Google Goggles???I?m indifferent to whether other hardware makers develop their own products, but a) I think they have to, if they want to be part of the ?always listening? value chain, whether or not there is a screen attached (the GG incarnation) and b) I want them to, so that a ?thousand flowers bloom? and there is innovation and consumer choice that drives rapid adoption. ? Matt Ocko

Manu Kumar is a former entrepreneur and now microVC with K9 Ventures focusing on deeper technology investments, and about a year ago, hung out with me In the Studio to discuss mobile camera imaging:

While I was a student at Carnegie Mellon, there was a lot of work on ?wearable computing? back then. For instance, check out VuMan from 1997 and Navigator. I cite these to show that the concept of Google Glass as a wearable computer is nothing new. It?s been around for well over a decade. What has changed is that now the technology has become advanced enough to make it a *lot* smaller, *somewhat* less dorky, and by means of being connected, hugely more information-rich.

I believe that Google Glass will be a long-term platform. The initial consumer adoption will be by early adopters ? by a lot of us Silicon Valley geek-types who want to play with the tech. However, I suspect that the real adoption will come from more commercial applications ? people who need to work with their hands and can benefit from instant access to information. Police cars are equipped with computers to provide cops with access to information on the road. You can imagine a Google Glass app designed specifically for police, fire, EMS etc. Likewise in construction, maintenance, inspection, lots of tasks become orders of magnitude more efficient, when imagined with Glass as the underlying platform.

As you know, I?ve been spending a lot of time on computer vision, cameras, etc. Glass presents the first really usable Augmented Reality platform, because it?s the first time that you can get a true overlay on reality, without having to be walking with your phone/tablet in front of your face! ?I?ve already had conversation with some companies who are doing advance computer vision and augmented reality work where they could potentially do interesting things with Google Glass. However, since it?s been in such limited distribution so far, it won?t be until they get their hands on it and can evaluate what it?s capable of, before we can really talk more concretely about it. In other words, I?m very curious to see the potential of Glass as a platform for new products/companies, but don?t have enough information to act on it just yet. ? Manu Kumar

Albert Wenger?is a partner with Union Square Ventures:

I am quite optimistic about the long term potential of augmented reality. But I question whether now is the right time for a top down adoption strategy with a polished consumer product. It seems to me that we are at the hacker and early adopter stage instead. By going with an immediate mass market strategy and embracing celebrities I think Google is taking a very big gamble. Let?s keep in mind that the iPhone was far from the first smart phone. A lot of software and application tinkering had happened on Blackberries and other predecessors most of which had niche use cases. I often find myself saying to entrepreneurs that you ?can?t push on a string.? It may be a tired cliche but it seems highly relevant for consumer products. If people aren?t ready for it, no amount of hype or spending will make the product stick. The people who are ready now are the hackers and tinkerers. So why not embrace them instead? (reproduced from Albert?s blog, with permission). -Albert Wenger

Hemant Taneja is a partner with General Catalyst:

Seeing a device from your childhood science fiction novels become reality is one of the most exciting moments for any of us who work in tech. However, the commercial success of Google Glass relies on three crucial parts. First, consumers must love the hardware. The product has to be intuitive and function seamlessly with everyday activities. Second, Google must develop a high-quality API that allows developers the freedom to create top-notch software and fully leverage Glass? capabilities. Third, Google has to ensure that the best applications are discovered by users. All three of these areas are non-trivial and will take more time, and users should be prepared for the day when hype meets reality. Google Glass is an entirely new form factor, and thus there will be a longer uptake time than we have just saw the past two years with tablets. Given that dynamic, we are going to look for simple but effective applications that can can go mainstream as adoption of the Glass product increases with Google?s future iterations of the product. -Hemant Taneja

Rohit Sharma is a venture partner with True Ventures:

As an investor, the most exciting possibility about Google Glass is the behavior change it might produce. If Glass or other devices begin to connect and share meaningful information about consumers and their digitized presence, it opens up a massive new arena for applications. Another possibility is that Glass becomes the hub for multiple devices (FitBits, bloodchem sensors, watches, etc.) and becomes an additional app platform connected to but independent of smartphones/tablets. I don?t know if consumers will adopt it, that?s the biggest ?if? ? not the technology or the devices. There?s plenty of time for investing in a post-Glass reality if adoption happens. I haven?t seen any pitches yet but also haven?t been looking yet, as I?m much more interested in the behavior change it induces and provokes. -Rohit Sharma

Manchin: Gun bill to be reintroduced

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the architects of failed gun control legislation says he's bringing it back.

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he would re-introduce a measure that would require criminal and mental health background checks for gun buyers at shows and online. The West Virginia Democrat says that if lawmakers read the bill, they will support it.

Manchin sponsored a previous version of the measure with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. It failed.

Manchin says there was confusion over what was in the bill.

In the wake of last year's school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Congress took up gun control legislation, but it was blocked by supporters of the powerful pro-gun lobby, the National Rifle Association.

Manchin appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

What the Internet shares about you via 'secondary use'

As Rebecca Martinson knows, there?s no privacy on the Internet. When a profanity-laden rant she emailed to only her Delta Gamma sorority sisters made its way onto Gawker and into viral history, she was publicly mocked and forced to resign from the sorority. But the Internet is not only a place to be humiliated. It's also a place for people or companies to pick up even more information about you. That includes your address, gender, date of birth and, with a little sleuthing, your Social Security number and credit history.

That's been made clear in a recent spate of "doxing" (document tracing) of celebrities that revealed, for example, that Microsoft CEO Bill Gates had an outstanding debt on his credit card. But none of this information comes from hacking. It's either already public or accessible by, for example, paying an online people-finding service to get a Social Security number, and then running a credit check.

Then there's all the data you pour into social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Foursquare and others. Now employers can fire workers for expressing opinions they don?t like, strangers can stalk you with mobile apps and college administrators can judge the quality of applicants by the number of drinking photos posted to their account.

Aleecia L. McDonald, director of privacy for the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford University, said people are grappling with the idea that their information has a secondary use.

"The issue isn?t so much that information is out there and people can see it," she said. "On Facebook, that?s the point. But it?s when that information gets used in a new and different way." [See also: That's an Order! 10 Facebook Privacy Tips from the Marines]

It's all public
Many gun owners felt that secondary use of private information when they saw an interactive map published by the Journal News of White Plains, N.Y., that listed the name and addresses of everyone in two New York state counties with a gun permit. A map listing the names, addresses, phone numbers and social media accounts of Journal News reporters, including the author of the original story, was circulated online in retaliation. At least one county refused to turn over pistol permit records, citing the possibility of ?endangering citizens.?

However, the records are all public. There is no law against publishing them either in print or online, even if it makes some uncomfortable.

?I can use Zillow.com and see home prices for everything up and down the neighborhood,? McDonald said. ?Sure, all that information was available at City Hall, but I wasn?t going to look it all up [in person] because that takes effort.?

When real estate search site Zillow first came out, many people were shocked at the amount of information on it ? including the price paid for homes and names of owners. Zillow has since backed down from publishing names, but last year, it began listing homes going through the foreclosure process, which caused another firestorm of people looking to opt out. But all the information comes from public records. Zillow says it doesn?t list names, only properties; and it does not allow those with foreclosed property to opt out of being published.

Other sites, such as Arrests.org, list mug shots by state. And some local police departments are now posting photos of recent arrests on Facebook. Now with the Internet and databases, public records are easy to distribute and see.

Social oversharing
Adi Kamdar of the Electronic Frontier Foundation cautions about the use of Facebook Graph Search, which allows users to search information from news feeds of friends and those users with settings set to public on Facebook. Now anyone can look for, for example, single women living in San Francisco who share their taste for tapas and perhaps find a phone number and email address. Who needs Match.com anymore?

Facebook has also reportedly been working for the past year on a socially ambient mobile app ? one that lets you literally track people or friends via a map and GPS. While the socially ambient aspect hasn?t appeared yet, it?s expected to surface, according to Bloomberg News, likely in a new version of the Facebook Home interface.

?There?s nothing you can do in the electronic world that your boss can?t find and you can?t be fired for,? said Lewis Maltby, president of National Workrights Institute. ?I got a call today from someone who got fired because he was writing short stories on his own time (online) and apparently they were a little kinky.?

Maltby, whose organization fights for human rights in the workplace, said that today, people?s futures are in peril every time their boss or college admissions office looks on the Internet. That means users shouldn?t post photos of themselves with an alcoholic drink in their hand or espouse political views, because it can lead to a value judgment.

?You can still go online and say what you want, but you?re crazy if you do,? Maltby said.

Another problem today is social networks becoming a larger part of one?s life. To comment on articles, people frequently log into a Facebook account first. Others are finding that their Google+ social account is being attached to their Gmail account and will be needed to comment on apps or games on Google Play. Google+ accounts are also used to sign into YouTube and other Google sites. Many social networks are seemingly trying to end anonymous posting.

To preserve privacy, a person would have to walk away from Google or Facebook. ?It?s a trade-off to some extent,? Kamdar said. "The more these services get adopted, the more you have to think, 'My entire online presence depends on this corporation or this service I don?t want to opt into.' "

Recently Facebook Home was launched on Android devices, and many noticed that the interface logged online purchases and visits, although Facebook said that it doesn?t assign names to the information. Facebook is using customer loyalty cards' information and public records to sell to advertisers and marketers. However, Facebook Home isn?t hunting anyone down to do this; people themselves are opting to use an Android phone with the Facebook skin on it. [See also: How Facebook Home Undermines Your Security]

What you can do
Long-term solutions could be legal, regulatory or even codes of conduct for companies, said McDonald. The White House is now working on a Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights, but there is still not a working draft of the bill, according to the New York Times.

Meanwhile, users can save themselves some headaches by understanding that whatever they place online will stay online. Nothing online is temporary; instead, it's more like an Internet tattoo. Martinson?s online (and likely late-night) outburst will follow her throughout college and possibly the workforce, according to CNN.

Keep all social networks set to the highest privacy settings even if you have to manually approve follow requests.

If posting to a forum or other online database, don?t use your real name or email address (or at least one you don?t mind people seeing).

Never give out your date of birth, phone number or physical address if you can help it.

Never give out your Social Security number. Many colleges, banks, brokerage houses and other companies now have alternative login IDs to use provided you ask for one. (However, not even colleges or banks are immune to hackers, so always monitor your credit for suspicious activity.)

Remember that what you post can be seen by others. Be careful of what you say and which photos are posted because it could potentially be seen by millions of people.

?A lot of data is coming from people directly,? McDonald said. ?Lock down [social media] accounts to only friends. Being more mindful is the first step we can take before looking for other solutions.?

1st female Iraq war resister to be court martialed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? The first female soldier to flee the U.S. military for Canada to avoid the Iraq war is to be court-martialed Monday.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/12wpci6 ) Pfc. Kimberly Rivera is charged with desertion and faces up to five years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted.

Rivera was assigned to Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Colorado and served in Iraq in 2006. She says she became disillusioned with the mission.

While on a two-week leave in the U.S. in 2007, she crossed the Canadian border after she was ordered to serve another tour in Iraq. Rivera applied for permanent residency, but Canadian immigration officials ordered the mother of four to leave the country or face deportation.

She was arrested last year at the U.S. border.

Dementia Diaries: A Journey With Dementia: Dad's Birthday

Today we celebrate dad?s 53 years of life. Although most of our celebrating was yesterday. We kept it simple this year by going out to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory (without kids!!) and going back to dad?s house to play our favorite family card game: Scat. Dad has been itching to get a group together to play Scat for a while. What better time than his birthday? To help us celebrate, dad?s sister and husband came,? my brother and sister came with their spouses and our family friends, the Klamms, also joined us.

Mom still remembers important dates, such as birthdays and anniversaries, so she knew dad?s birthday was coming up. I prepped her days in advance that we would be going out to dinner to celebrate. Knowing mom?s rigid routine, we planned to leave early (I told her we would swing by and pick them up at 5:00) and dad chose the Spaghetti Factory knowing that at least one of mom?s favorites was on the menu: tortellini.

Of the few foods mom loves to eat, tortellini is among them. But not just tortellini?she must have her frozen mixed vegetables smothered in ?Smart Balance? and garlic. Lots of garlic.

Last Monday I told mom where we were going; she couldn?t remember The Old Spaghetti Factory. I described the restaurant to her and explained that they had her favorite tortellini there, but she still could not remember. And she was concerned about what foods they would have there that she would like. Later that same morning, as were shopping in Target, mom went down the refrigerated food aisle and pointed out the ?same kind? of tortellini that she loves to buy. I took that as my golden opportunity to explain to her that the package she was pointing to was exactly the kind of food that would be at the restaurant for dad?s birthday. A couple rounds of repetition and mom understood what I was saying.

Saturday morning, I called mom to remind her about dinner that night. She remembered and was prepared to go.

No sooner than I pulled out of my driveway, at 5:04 pm, did I get a call on my cell phone from mom.

?Cassandra, I thought you said you were coming to get us at 5:00. It?s getting too late for dinner and I need to eat, we need to go. Are you coming?? she said, hardly pausing to take a breath.

?I?m in my car and on my way to get you mom,? I told her.

?But you said you were going to be here at 5:00, why aren?t you here yet??

?I?m coming mom, I?m in my car,? I repeated.

?What? You said you?re coming now? But why aren?t you here yet? You said 5:00,? she whined.

?It?s only 5:04 mom. I will be there in 3 minutes. Look at your clock and I will be there in 3 minutes,? I said, as my husband chuckled in the driver?s seat next to me.

?Are you coming down my street now? Are you at that stop sign place now? Where are you??

I firmly, yet calmly, told her again that I would be there very soon and that I was going to hang up the phone. A couple minutes later, we pulled into the driveway to see mom?s face peering out the curtains at the living room window. I walked in to let my dad know we were there (as if my mom wasn?t going to let him know!) and mom pushed us out the door, complaining that,

?It?s getting too late for dinner.?

I felt a bit uneasy as I watched mom walk out the front door with a plastic bag. A quick peek inside the bag confirmed my suspicions: a container of mixed vegetables and a can of diet Root Beer.

We?ve had this problem before: mom trying to bring her own food into a restaurant. A couple years ago we took mom to her favorite steak house and she brought out her own can of Root Beer and started pouring it into a cup. The waitress told her she couldn?t bring in her own drinks and mom carried about her business, pouring the soda, not seeming to hear a word she said. We tried to tell mom that she couldn?t bring in her own drink and she became a little hostile with us, insisting that she could too bring her own drink because they didn?t have anything she liked. This incident was before her diagnosis, so weren?t quite sure how to handle it back then (it was at the time that we were suspecting her behavior was due to brain damage from her surgery). In the end, the waitress had let her keep her soda, but let us know that it would not be allowed in the next time.

I was nervous about the confrontation that would likely ensue at the restaurant. Not only was she bringing in a soda, but mixed vegetables! This wasn?t going to be pretty.

We conversed in the car-my brother, Joe, his wife, Natalie, my dad, husband and myself-about the situation. It was decided that it might be best to just explain the situation to the hostess or waitress when we arrived at the restaurant and hope that they would be accommodating. I felt skeptical.

After we checked in and everyone took a seat in the lobby while they prepped our table, I approached the host and explained the situation. He told me he would need to consult with his manager.

Great. My nerves took over as I stood waiting for the manager to come up. I didn?t want a confrontation with my mom. I didn?t want to put a damper on dad?s birthday. I wondered if we should have just tried to sneak the food in (the problem with that is that mom is not very inconspicuous about it).

The manager came to the front desk and my Aunt came to my side in support. It helps that she?s a nurse. I figured I could try to use that to my advantage if needs be?she assured me they could not discriminate her disability. I felt more confident with her by my side.

I first told the manager that we were there to celebrate my dad?s birthday, and then I explained that my mom had dementia and that with this dementia comes certain obsessions. One obsession is her food. I told her that mom planned to order the tortellini but that she must have her mixed vegetables to go with it. She also has to have to her Mug Root Beer, which most restaurants do not carry (she despises Barqs Root Beer). I told the manager that we tried to talk her out of bringing food in, but that she lacks comprehension of what we are telling her.

For a minute, I thought she was going to turn us away. But relief soon swept over me as she said,

?That is not a problem at all, don?t even worry about it. You don?t ever have to worry about that at all when you come to the Spaghetti Factory.?

Confrontation averted! We thanked her and went about our evening, enjoying dad?s birthday dinner. Mom happily dumped her veggies onto her plate of tortellini, giving it a good stir before devouring it in minutes.

I even got a picture of mom and dad. I have to say, this is one of the best pictures I?ve gotten of them over the past several years. I think mom looks quite pretty and more like herself than I?ve seen in a very long time.

dads bdayI just want to say, one more time, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my awesome dad. The past few years have been really hard for our family, beginning with the loss of my grandparents?then the diagnosis of my mom. The past couple months have been especially difficult for our family, due to other circumstances. Losing my mom has been gradual over the past few years, but each day seems harder and harder and she slips away more and more. And I know the person who suffers the most is my dad. I hope that he was able to enjoy himself for all of his birthday festivities. And I am also very glad that mom was able to be there with us, even with all her quirks!

Boston suspects' father postpones trip to U.S.

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The father of the two Boston bombing suspects said Sunday that he has postponed a trip from Russia to the United States because of poor health.

"I am really sick," Anzor Tsarnaev, 46, told The Associated Press. He said his blood pressure had spiked to dangerous levels.

Tsarnaev said at a news conference Thursday that he planned to leave that day or the next for the U.S. with the hope of seeing his younger son, who is under arrest, and burying his elder son, who was killed. His family, however, indicated later Thursday that the trip could be pushed back because he was not feeling well.

Tsarnaev confirmed on Sunday that he is staying in Chechnya, a province in southern Russia, but did not specify whether he was hospitalized. He is an ethnic Chechen and has relatives in Chechnya, although he and his family spent little time in Chechnya or anywhere else in Russia before moving to the U.S. a decade ago.

He and the suspects' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, returned to Russia last year and settled in Makhachkala, the capital of neighboring Dagestan, where Tsarnaeva's relatives live.

During the past week, they were both questioned extensively by U.S. investigators who had traveled to Makhachkala from Moscow. They also were besieged by journalists who staked out their home.

Tsarnaev's family said last week that he intended to get to the U.S. by flying from Grozny, the Chechen capital, to Moscow. He and Tsarnaeva left Dagestan on Friday, but their whereabouts were unclear.

Moviora Plays Ten Questions To Help You Pick A Flick

movioraWhenever my friends and I get together for a movie party, the toughest part of the evening is collectively deciding what to watch. There?s always one person that shoots a good suggestion down with a curt, ?I?m not in the mood for that?. Moviora is an app that aims to make that process a little easier. It?s a strange thing. Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video certainly provide a plethora of video content for our viewing pleasure, but oftentimes the biggest challenge is narrowing down all of those options to just one title. Netflix offers a list of recommendations by sifting through our viewing history, but it?s far from perfect. I?ve watched a lot of stupid crap, and so have all of my other friends I share my Netflix account with. More often than not, my searching on Netflix will end up in mired in a list of obscure, low-budget B-movie titles that I have no intention of ever watching. Moviora is an app that attempts to discern what we?re in the mood for watching by essentially playing a game of ten questions. For example, it asks if you?re in the mood for a ?drama?, and you narrow the choices down by answering yes or no. Once you?re cycled through these prompts five to six times, you?re provided with a movie recommendation, along with a trailer, some reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, and links to the film on Netflix and iTunes. When I answered ?yes? to drama, ?no? to comedy, ?yes? to romance, ?yes? to action, and ?yes? to adventure, it provided me with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which is actually a movie I haven?t watched yet and wouldn?t mind seeing at all. It doesn?t always provide you with the perfect choice, but there?s an addictive quality to the ten questions aspect and it?s certainly a lot better than aimlessly meandering through Netflix?s movie titles. You can try out Moviora for yourself at their website here. The app is currently a free download in the iOS App Store.

Hill says she signed with Sony to pay taxes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lauryn Hill says she has signed with Sony to pay her overdue taxes.

Hill pleaded guilty last year to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007. The 37-year-old posted on her Tumblr blog late Thursday that she "signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes."

The total Hill owes is in dispute, but it is around $1 million. Her next sentencing date in New Jersey is May 6.

Hill also says she's working on new music. She hasn't released much music since her 1998 solo debut, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." It has sold more than 10 million albums and won five Grammy Awards.

Hill writes that she's not only signing with Sony because of her legal woes, but also because she needs to express her creativity.

Investing In Apache Corp - When Is A Good Time? - Seeking Alpha

I wrote an article on Apache Corp (APA) back in February asking if it was a good time to invest in the company. Here is what I concluded at the time:

"With Apache Corp. missing expectations for the fourth time in a row and the downsizing of 2013 expectations, I would play a wait and see on this stock. The reactionary move may or may not be done, but I am uncomfortable investing in too many unknowns at this point."

Two months have passed since I made that observation and it appears that J.P. Morgan analyst Joseph Allman would still agree with me as he has downgraded the company giving it a "neutral" rating. What is his reasoning behind this? The company has a good track record of returns and strong balance sheet with a nice diversification on its asset sheet, but in this present environment, the company is expecting low growth and there are no meaningful catalysts in the near future expected to help the stock. In fact, it does have some burdening assets that could cause it to even underperform its own group this year. Mr. Allman also dropped the price target from $89.50 to $76.50.

This slowdown in growth started last year when production growth came in at only 5.5% even though the company expected a 6% to 9% growth for the year. And in 2013 the company expects growth only 3% to 5% which is really disappointing investors.

Pro's for Buying

One thing Apache Corp. has going for it is that most of its revenue come from its liquid assets, namely oil and liquefied natural gas. In 2012 natural gas sales for the company only accounted for 11% of its revenue and this makes its exposure to the low natural gas prices less than that of companies in the same industry. Not only is the company more into oil and liquefied natural gas, but it also has nice reserves in the Permian basin and Gulf of Mexico. Since both these regions are known to have high oil reserves, this works in Apache's favor and all we need is a change in the economy for prices to start going up and Apache to start benefiting. So the low price of the stock could be an appealing price point the buy into.

It is no secret that the price of oil and the growth of the economy go hand-in-hand. In fact, I would say that oil prices tend to follow the market as a whole. It should not come as a surprise that as the economy has recently pulled back so oil has also dropped in price due to this weakness in the US economy and a slowdown in the Chinese growth rate. The price of oil will remain tied to economic performance as economic growth is so intertwined in its dependence upon oil to generate energy. One thing we need to keep our eyes on is US and global economic reports because this will help us understand where the price of oil is going.

One concern I would have as an investor right now would be the "Geo risk" that I see in Apache's present holdings. The company has close to 20% of its production in Egypt and this particular region is very risky at the present and could have an adverse effect on the company's production without warning. This political uncertainty and growing adversity to the United States (from a political standpoint) does not inspire me.

Technically Speaking

Since mid April the stock has dropped dramatically, almost 10%, but found a base at the $68 price range. Can the stock drop further? There is not a lot of strength according to the RSI indicator to interpret the move of the stock beyond bearish territory. The MACD indicator confirms this weakness and the trend continues to stay in bearish territory. For this reason I would not make any observations that would point to the stock rebounding at this point. Nor do I find any news that's going to tell me that the stock is going to change direction either.

With J.P. Morgan's price point set at $76.50, that shows me that they expect the stock to barely move and trade in a channel. With the price of oil presently struggling and no catalyst seen in the near future to see oil prices go up, it does not look like Apache is a good long-term investment right now. But that does not mean that the company's forecasts for the year could not be low. All it will take is a turn in our economic indicators pointing to the fact that the economy is still growing and oil prices could start going up and this will help the company's revenue stream. Presently it looks like things are slowing down but in the big picture this could just be a bump in the road to long-term economic growth. If an investor looks at it from this standpoint then it could mean that Apache may be priced pretty well. But this is pure speculation and I tend stick with more concrete evidence when I invest. So I am still of the conclusion that investors should wait before jumping into the stock.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

Melatonin delays ALS symptom onset and death in mice

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Melatonin injections delayed symptom onset and reduced mortality in a mouse model of the neurodegenerative condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In a report published online ahead of print in the journal Neurobiology of Disease, the team revealed that receptors for melatonin are found in the nerve cells, a finding that could launch novel therapeutic approaches.

Annually about 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS, which is characterized by progressive muscle weakness and eventual death due to the failure of respiratory muscles, said senior investigator Robert Friedlander, M.D., UPMC Endowed Professor of neurosurgery and neurobiology and chair, Department of Neurological Surgery, Pitt School of Medicine. But the causes of the condition are not well understood, thwarting development of a cure or even effective treatments.

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that is best known for its role in sleep regulation. After screening more than a thousand FDA-approved drugs several years ago, the research team determined that melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that blocks the release of enzymes that activate apoptosis, or programmed cell death.

"Our experiments show for the first time that a lack of melatonin and melatonin receptor 1, or MT1, is associated with the progression of ALS," Dr. Friedlander said. "We saw similar results in a Huntington's disease model in an earlier project, suggesting similar biochemical pathways are disrupted in these challenging neurologic diseases."

Hoping to stop neuron death in ALS just as they did in Huntington's, the research team treated mice bred to have an ALS-like disease with injections of melatonin or with a placebo. Compared to untreated animals, the melatonin group developed symptoms later, survived longer, and had less degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord.

"Much more work has to be done to unravel these mechanisms before human trials of melatonin or a drug akin to it can be conducted to determine its usefulness as an ALS treatment," Dr. Friedlander said. "I suspect that a combination of agents that act on these pathways will be needed to make headway with this devastating disease."

Novel therapeutic approaches may cure chronic HBV infection

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Exciting new data presented today at the International Liver Congress? 2013 include results from early in vitro and in vivo studies targeting covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), which may form the basis of a cure for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

HBV cccDNA is organized into mini-chromosomes within the nucleus of infected cells by histone and non-histone proteins. Despite the availability of efficient therapies against HBV, long-term persistence of cccDNA necessitates life-long treatments to suppress the virus. The following three experimental studies demonstrate effective HBV-cccDNA targeting/depletion using novel therapeutic approaches which offer the potential of a cure.

Liver regeneration induces strong reduction of viral replication and cccDNA levels, but not complete cccDNA eradication; without antiviral treatment, de novo HBV infection can be re-established.

Key findings of research in HBV-infected human hepatocytes using the uPA/SCID chimeric mouse system show that liver regeneration induces strong reduction of viral replication and cccDNA levels, with rapid formation of cccDNA-free hepatocytes. However, because complete cccDNA eradication is not achieved, in the absence of antiviral treatment, de novo HBV infection could be re-established in quiescent (non-dividing) human hepatocytes. This suggests that induction of hepatocyte turn-over together with antiviral drugs inducing viral suppression, such as nucleoside analogues and IFN, or blocking cell entry, may accelerate the clearance of the viral minichromosome.

Targeting epigenetic control of nuclear cccDNA minichromosome to suppress HBV transcription and replication may form basis for other therapeutic approaches to curing chronic HBV infection.

In the infected liver cell the rate of replication of HBV is regulated by the acetylation or methylation of histone proteins which surround the cccDNA minichromosome -- so called epigenetic regulation. In a separate innovative study, the suppression of HBV transcription and replication by small molecules that target the epigenetic control of nuclear cccDNA minichromosome was investigated. The different classes of small molecules studied included: Class I, II and III histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi); p300 and PCAF histone acetyltransferases (HAT) inhibitors; hSirt1 activators; JMJD3 histone demethylase inhibitors.

The combined inhibition of p300 and PCAF HATs resulted in an evident reduction of HBV replication which mirrored the decrease of pgRNA transcription. The hSirt1/2 activator MC2791 and the JMJD3 inhibitor MC3119, albeit with different efficiency, inhibited both HBV replication and cccDNA transcription. Results represent a proof of concept that activation of hSirt1 and Ezh2 (through the inhibition of its functional antagonist JMJD3) by small molecules can induce an active epigenetic suppression of HBV cccDNA minichromosome similar to that observed with IFN?, and lead to persistent cccDNA silencing.

Lymphtoxin beta receptor (LTbR) agonisation represents basis for novel alternative therapeutic approach to curing chronic HBV infection.

The final study demonstrated that stimulating the lymphtoxin beta receptor (LTbR) provides an effective, long lasting and non-cytopathic mechanism for achieving effective HBV-cccDNA depletion in infected hepatocytes. Cell culture models including HBV-infected HepaRG cells and primary human hepatocytes were used to test the effect of antibodies stimulating human LTbR (BS1 or CBE11). Results show that a strong and dose-dependent anti-HBV effect was achieved by activation of the LTbR. All HBV replication markers were decreased with this treatment, including cccDNA in cells where HBV infection was already established.

Hepatitis B is the most prevalent cause of chronic viral hepatitis and a major global health problem. Prof. Fabien Zoulim, EASL Educational Councillor commented on the exciting new data: "In chronic hepatitis B infection, the viral genome forms a stable minichromosome -- the covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) -- which can persist throughout the lifespan of the hepatocyte."

"Current treatments focus on suppression of HBV and discovery of compounds directly targeting cccDNA has been one of the major challenges to curing HBV infection; but these preliminary data show novel therapeutic approaches can be applied to successfully target cccDNA with the long-term aspiration of finding a cure" added Prof. Fabien Zoulim.

Rescuers comb Bangladesh rubble for second night, 260 dead

By Serajul Quadir and Ruma Paul

SAVAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - Employees at a garment factory that collapsed in Bangladesh killing at least 260 people were told to work despite warnings it was unsafe, officials said on Thursday as an unknown number of the more than 3,000 workers remained trapped in the rubble.

Survivors described a deafening bang and tremors before the eight-floor building, where most of the employees were women, crashed all around them. Dhaka District police chief Habibur Rahman said about 2,000 people had been rescued over two days.

Wednesday's disaster refocused attention on Western high-street brands that use Bangladesh as a source of low cost goods. North American and European chains including British retailer Primark and Canada's Loblaw said they were supplied by factories in the building.

"I thought there was an earthquake," said Shirin Akhter, 22, who was starting her day at the New Wave Style workshop, six floors up, when the complex crumbled. Akhter was trapped for more than 24 hours before breaking through a wall with a metal bar. She said her monthly wage was $38.

For a second night, local residents used flashlights and dug with crowbars and their bare hands to find survivors and bodies beneath twisted wreckage of the Rana Plaza building in the commercial suburb of Savar, 30 km (20 miles) outside the capital Dhaka.

They dropped in bottled water and food to people who called out, trapped between floors. Late on Thursday, rescuers forced a hole into a room and pulled out 41 people alive. Still, the death toll grimly rose all day.

Relatives identified their dead among dozens of corpses wrapped in cloth on the veranda of a nearby school. More than 1,000 were injured.

Police said the owner of the building, local politician Mohammed Sohel Rana, was told of dangerous cracks on Tuesday.

While a bank in the building closed on Wednesday because of the warnings, the five clothing companies told their workers there was no danger, industry officials said. Rana is now on the run, according to police.

"We asked the garment owners to keep it closed," said Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mohammad Atiqul Islam. Instead, Islam said, there were 3,122 workers in the factories on Wednesday.

"An unspecified number of victims are still trapped," said Mizanur Rahman, a rescue worker with the fire brigade, as he clambered over the wreckage. "We can't be certain of getting them all out alive. We are losing a bit of hope."

DAY OF MOURNING

The government declared a national day of mourning and flags were flown half mast at all official buildings.

Dhaka city development authority had filed a case against the building's owner for faulty construction, Police Chief Rahman said. It filed another case against the owner and the five garments factories for causing unlawful death.

Rana had told proprietors of the building's five factories that the cracks were not dangerous, Islam said. "After getting the green signal from the plaza owner, all the garment factories opened," he said. BGMEA blacklisted the five companies on Thursday.

More than 1,000 textile workers besieged the BGMEA offices on Thursday, pelting it with stones and clashing with riot police, TV channels showed. The workers demanded all garment factories be shut and the owners harshly punished for accidents.

"The deaths of these workers could have been avoided if multinational corporations, governments and factory owners took workers' protection seriously," Amirul Haque Amin of the National Garment Workers' Federation said in a statement.

"Instead, the victims' families must live with the terrible consequences of this tragedy."

U.S. ambassador Dan Mozena said the accident could affect Bangladesh's market access to the United States. Bangladesh is fighting a petition by U.S. unions to revoke preferential trade access because of worker safety issues.

"It certainly makes the environment of the workplace safety questionable," Mozena told reporters in Dhaka.

UK clothing retailer Primark, which has 257 stores across Europe and is a unit of Associated British Foods, confirmed that one of its suppliers occupied the second floor of the building. Danish retailer PWT Group, which owns the Texman brand, said it had been using a factory in the building for seven years.

"We check the working conditions at the factory, but we are not construction engineers. We cannot be held responsible for how they build their factories," PWT director Ole Koch said.

British clothing retailer Matalan said it used to be supplied by one of the factories at the complex but had no current production there.

Canada's Loblaw, a unit of food processing and distribution firm George Weston Ltd, said one factory made a small number of "Joe Fresh" apparel items for the company.

Primark, Loblaw and PWT operate under codes of conduct aimed at ensuring products are made in good working conditions. Documents including order sheets and cutting plans obtained by Reuters appeared to show that other major clothing brands such as Benetton had used suppliers in the building in the last year.

A Benetton spokesman said none of the factories were suppliers to the company. Spain's Mango said it had an unfulfilled sample order with Phantom Apparel, at the plaza.

About 3.6 million people work in Bangladesh's garment industry, making it the world's second-largest apparel exporter. The bulk of exports - 60 percent - go to Europe. The United States takes 23 percent and 5 percent go to Canada.

GIVING BLOOD

Hundreds of students donated blood at a clinic in Savar after doctors at Dhaka hospitals said they could not cope with the number of victims.

Mohammad Mosharraf, who was rescued on Thursday after 26 hours, said he had been hit on the head by something heavy and knocked unconscious when the building came down.

"When I regain my sense I found another four colleagues are also trapped under the debris of the building," he told Reuters.

"We desperately tried to shout for someone to rescue us. Initially we didn't receive any response, but we moved to another part of the floor and found some light and heard voices."

The Rana Plaza collapse follows a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory on the outskirts of Dhaka that killed 112 people in November and another incident at a factory in January in which seven people died, compounding concerns about worker safety and low wages in Bangladesh.

Entry level wages in these factories start at 14 cents an hour, said Charles Kernaghan of the Institute for Global Labor and Human Rights.

After the Tazreen fire, U.S. retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would take steps to alleviate safety concerns, while Gap Inc announced a four-step fire-safety program.

Merchandise for both Wal-Mart and Sears Holdings Corp was being made, without the retailers' authorization, at the Tazreen facility when the fire occurred last November.

Wal-Mart said on Thursday that no goods were being made for it at the Rana Plaza facility. It now has a zero-tolerance policy on unauthorized contracting and said it had not learned of any unauthorized production taking place there. Sears said that based on its initial findings, no merchandise was being made for it at any of the factories in the building.

Edward Hertzman, a sourcing agent based in New York who also publishes trade magazine Sourcing Journal, said pressure from U.S. retailers to keep a lid on costs fostered poor conditions.

Hertzman, whose publication has offices in Bangladesh, said New Wave Bottoms was on the second floor, Phantom Apparels the third, Phantom Tack the fourth and Ethar Textile the fifth.

The New Wave website listed 27 main buyers, including firms from Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Canada and the United States.

Google Transparency Report shows censorship spike, details takedown requests

Governments are getting nosier than ever, at least if you ask Google. The search firm has already noticed rapidly mounting censorship in recent months, but its latest half-year Transparency Report has revealed a 26 percent surge in takedown requests toward the end of 2012 -- at 2,285 total, more than twice as many as in 2009. Much of the jump can be attributed to Brazil, whose municipal election triggered a rush of anti-defamation requests from candidates, as well as a Russian blacklisting law that allows for trial-free website takedowns.

Whether or not the heat dies down in 2013, we'll have a better sense of just what happens when a YouTube request comes down the pipe. From now on, Google will say whether government-based demands to remove videos were based on YouTube's Community Guidelines or were directly linked to regional laws. Google isn't any more inclined to comply with such requests -- it argues those Brazilian clips are free speech, for example -- but we'll have a better sense of just how easy it is for the company to say no.

For years, they were part of the splendor at Saint Irenaeus Church in Clinton. Three large stained glass windows are?the originals from the church. Over time, pieces from the windows began to deteriorate, and were desperately in need of repair.

That's where?technicians from Glass Heritage of Davenport stepped in. For?several months, the technicians have been involved in a labor intensive project to restore the windows. Each piece of glass is cleaned. Technician Patricia Rogers says the pieces are placed on a build pattern. That pattern shows the lead lines of the windows.??

Kirk Prebyl says technicians do their homeowrk before the repairs and replacements are made. Technicians spend hours planning, documenting, and finding ways to restore the windows as much as possible to their original look. Workers treasure every scrap of original glass, replacing the original only when there is no other choice.

The three windows depict the Crucified Christ, and two figures on either side. Each of the windows has about a thousand pieces of stained glass. The windows should be installed in the church in June.

The Clinton County Historical Society owns the church building. The society acquired it when the Diocese of Davenport decided to close the church. ?The society raised about fourteen thousand dollars for the restoration work.?Glass Heritage is certified by the Stained Glass Association of America. ?
