Dr. Peter Geller visited London in 1996 on a hunch. Lucky for both him and his research, his gut feeling turned out to be correct.

?While most people go to London to see the sights and watch the theatre, I sat in an archive and watched a film,? he says with a laugh.

That film was The Romance of the Far Fur Country, a silent documentary shot by filmmakers hired by the Hudson?s Bay Company (HBC). The silent documentary was filmed in 1919, premiered to a Winnipeg audience in 1920 in honour of the HBC?s 250th anniversary, but then fell out of the public eye.

However, Geller, the Vice Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic at University of the Fraser Valley, suspected the reels might be housed in the National Film and Television Archives at the British Film Institute. Sure enough, upon his arrival in London, he was able to track down the film in the archives. The only problem? It was far from a finished film: the footage was completely out of order.

Geller?s research has long revolved around the visual history of the Canadian North, which this film fit into perfectly. After watching and studying the footage in London, he included a chapter about The Romance of the Far Fur Country in his 2004 book, Northern Exposures: Photographing and Filming the Canadian North, 1920-1945.

Spurred by the interest of Geller and filmmaker Kevin Nikkel, the footage was returned from Britain to the HBC Archives in Manitoba earlier this year. The footage was digitized prior to its return to Canada in the fall.

But their work didn?t end there. Now captivated by the film footage, Geller and Nikkel have been working together to piece the film back into some kind of order so it can once again be shown to a Canadian audience.

?There is eight hours of raw footage, which the original filmmakers edited into a two-hour-long documentary,? Geller notes. ?The footage we found in the London archive isn?t the final film ? it?s a jumble of images and out of order captions. There?s a lot of work to be done to piece it back together.?

The team has now assembled the footage into a 30 minute film, which is being shown across Canada in the coming months. It?s already played in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and several communities in northern Alberta, including Fort Chipewyan, and is coming to Vancouver on July 31. After that, it will travel to Victoria and onto Alert Bay.

Geller says he hopes to help bring the film to as many communities as possible ? especially the communities the original film team visited in 1919.

?We?re basically retracing the steps of the film. We?re making an effort to return the footage to the communities, since it was never screened in the communities it was shot,? Geller explains. ?It?s this huge, cross-Canada odyssey, and we want to connect that back to its roots.?

The original film crew started in Montreal, travelled up the St. Lawrence to Labrador, up to what is now Nunavut, into northern Ontario, and then over to northern Alberta, and finally over and up the sunshine coast to Alert Bay. Geller and Nikkel hope to follow at least some of that journey.

?It?s a fascinating film that helped to draw Canada together,? Geller says. ?The HBC hoped to show how they, as a company, had helped bind Canada together ? connecting Inuit and other northern Aboriginal peoples to traders and city dwellers like the original Winnipeg audience. For the Hudson?s Bay Company, it was a celebration of its history and showed the audience the variety of culture across Canada. And as a document of its time, it is important to recognize how the film is a part of the history of colonization, and both presented and shaped stereotypical views of Aboriginal people.?

The film will be showing at Vancity Theatre in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 31 at 7 pm. Geller and Nikkel will both be attending, and will offer a short Q & A period after the screening.

A spokesperson for Dr. Geller said, "Dr. Geller hopes to screen in as many places as possible, and we might see screenings in the Fraser Valley in the near future."

Anne Hathaway has shared her sorrow for those affected by the shooting at ?The Dark Knight Rises? screening in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12 and left dozens hospitalized.

?My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act,? Hathaway, who plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the Christopher Nolan-directed film, said Sunday in a statement to Access Hollywood. ?I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. Loyola study addresses health complications and unique needs of caregivers

MAYWOOD, Ill. - Caregivers of stroke survivors are at risk for developing depression and complications from chronic stress, according to a study published by researchers at the Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing (MNSON) in the latest issue of Biological Research for Nursing.

Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The National Family Caregiver Association reports that up to 80 percent of stroke survivors are cared for by family members who help them manage their physical and cognitive dysfunction, which can include paralysis, personality changes, urinary incontinence and speech difficulties.

"Stroke survivors can suffer significant and lasting disabilities that may require lifelong support from family and other caregivers," said Karen Saban, PhD, RN, APRN, CNRN, lead author and associate professor, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. "Many families struggle to provide 24-hour care for their loved ones. This burden places the caregivers at risk for depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances, which can harm quality of life and heighten their risk for other health problems.

This study evaluated 45 women who were caring for a family member who had experienced a stroke during the past year. Study participants were recruited from support groups, social networking sites and two outpatient clinics. The median age of the women was 55.8 years and the average hours of care they provided was 50.7 hours per week. The women completed surveys about perceived stress, caregiver burden, social support, quality of sleep and depressive symptoms. They also provided saliva samples to test for the stress-related hormone cortisol four times throughout the day for two days.

Results revealed that women had high levels of perceived stress and caregiver burden and poor quality of sleep. The study also found that the burden of caring for a stroke victim increases the risk of depressive symptoms and stress. This burden can include financial strain, home confinement, changes in the relationship with the care recipient, noncompliance of the stroke survivor, demands of caring for the stroke victim and having little personal time for oneself. Those who had high symptoms of depression also had decreasing levels of cortisol during the day while women with fewer symptoms of depression had higher levels. Authors suggest that lower cortisol levels may contribute to an increased risk of depression.

Another Loyola study published in a recent issue of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing found that female caregivers of stroke survivors grieve the life that they once shared with the stroke survivor and struggle to cope with multiple family and work demands while trying their best to interact with health-care providers to attain the best possible care for their loved one. The study also found that health-care providers can assist caregivers in identifying their needs and referring them to appropriate resources related to assistance with care, transportation, nutrition and ongoing education.

"This was one of the first studies to look at the unique needs of women caring for stroke survivors," Saban said. "Recognizing the challenges of these caregivers may help health-care professionals better support these women."

Fans are getting a chance to fully enjoy EA Sports' NCAA Football 13.

College football fans jonesing for gridiron action might have to wait until Aug. 30 for the 2012 season to get under way, but NCAA Football 13 might help diehards satiate their cravings until then.

EA Sports? annual college football video game was released Tuesday, offering up improved gameplay and new features that should help fans get through the dog days of summer.

Gameplay

This year?s version is a significant upgrade over NCAA Football 12, which was hampered by unrealistic gameplay and glitches, especially in the passing game. Defenses read throws too easily and linebackers managed to jump what seemed to be 10 feet into the air to knock down passes.

NCAA Football 13 fixes that with an improved, smooth passing system.

Gamers can now put touch on passes, throw with more precision and cannot get away with sloppy footwork or cross-field lobs.? Basically, you have much more control on how good or bad you do through the air.

This feature makes for a more realistic and fun experience.

Gameplay in general is much better in NCAA 13. Players move with more fluidity, the computer seems to respond appropriately and users can effectively adjust wide receivers mid-throw, which wasn?t the case in previous years.

The ability to abort out of a play action pass is also a nice addition.

Overall, it feels more like a college football game.

Heisman Challenge

Every year, EA Sports creates a new feature that it pushes to be its primary promotional tool?It?s a way to convince consumers to buy a relatively similar game annually.

In NCAA Football 13, we have Heisman Challenge.

Really, it?s a fun concept.

Users can exclusively control 16 former Heisman winners throughout a college season and are assigned statistical goals to break during games and throughout the campaign.

So say you?re Barry Sanders, you have to surpass X amount of yards in a season, along with other tasks, in order to win the Heisman Trophy.

Adding to that, there is a Reaction Time component that?for a maximum of 15 seconds with a refillable meter?slows the game down for your player, enabling you to read defenses clearly and perform slightly better.

But perhaps the most interesting part of Heisman Challenge is this: The Heisman winners can play at any school.

How would Tim Tebow look donning garnet and gold for Florida State (two fan bases just gagged simultaneously)? What if Doug Flutie played for Miami and threw the ?Hail Flutie? against Boston College?

Those questions can be answered in Heisman Challenge.

Although this doesn?t carry the game, Heisman Challenge does offer a nice changeup from normal gameplay.

Dynasty Mode

Arguably the game?s most popular feature year after year, Dynasty Mode enables players to take over a school as a head coach (or as defensive or offensive coordinator) and build the program throughout the course of several decades.

Many of the same elements are back, but a noteworthy change is the ability to scout recruits. A certain amount of time is allotted to scouting a prospect in order to see if his overall rating matches up with his star ranking (one to five stars, five making him an elite prospect).

Although this makes the practice of recruiting more time consuming, it does add more depth and gives the user a little more control over their program.

Smaller improvements to recruiting?like the ability to pitch a player on coaching style/position success, or having a chance to break into a player?s top 10 favorite schools with more ease?also make for a better Dynasty experience.

EA Sports also strongly endorsed its ESPN studio update feature. While it provides realistic breaks from the game, it doesn?t provide much mileage as far as entertainment value is concerned.

Road to Glory

Similar to Heisman Challenge, this returning game mode gives the use a chance to play as a high school prospect at a certain position for an entire season.

Depending on what level the player performs through the year, different schools of varying prestige will offer scholarships. Then you can pick what program to attend and work your way up the depth chart and try to establish a legacy ?in college for the next four years.

Although EA Sports attempted to create a better experience through a more tailor-made play calling, Road to Glory falls short yet again. Players seem to have a delayed reaction time and camera angles are disorienting.

The most frustrating aspect of what could be an extremely fun game mode is when you take over a defensive player. The computer will go out of its away to avoid throwing to a user-controlled cornerback. Or the computer will opt to throw an interception rather than take a sack from the use.

This was a problem last year and still persists in NCAA Football 13.

Overall

EA Sports did a fine job with NCAA Football 13. There are some entertaining new game modes, the graphics are clean and?most importantly?the gameplay is much improved, making the game a good way to buy time until Aug. 30 comes around.

Researchers have isolated what are essentially tiny compass needles in the noses of rainbow trout that may explain these and many other animals' incredible ability to navigate across vast distances.

When cells scraped from the trout's nasal passages were placed in a rotating magnetic field, a clump of tiny iron-rich crystals inside the cells called magnetite ? the same mineral used in?compass?needles ? spun in synchrony with the field, turning the cells around with them.

The strength of the crystals' magnetic response, and their firm attachment to the surrounding cell membranes, lent strong support for what scientists have long suspected: That these crystals lean back and forth like a sail in response to Earth's weak magnetic field, and that the cells they are embedded in somehow convey their swaying movements to the brain. This is believed to confer trout and other migratory animals with a "magnetic sense" by which to judge direction.

As detailed in a new paper published online July 9 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers found that the magnetic cells in the trout's noses swayed in response to a magnetic field 100 times more forcefully than had previously been predicted. "More importantly, we show for the first time that the internal compass needle has a strong connection to the plasma membrane [or outer membrane] of the cell, which is important to realize an immediate sensing process," said lead researcher Michael Winklhofer of the University of Munich in Germany.

The results show that the magnetic cells "clearly meet the physical requirements for a magnetoreceptor" capable of rapidly detecting small changes in Earth's magnetic field, the researchers said.

The strength of Earth's field varies in a predictable way across the planet's surface, allowing migratory animals to use it for position-finding. By learning the strength of a field that exists at a particular destination, the animals can home in on it. That much is pretty well established in the science field; what has remained mysterious is?how?these animals use magnetic-field changes to navigate. [What If Earth's Magnetic Poles Flip?]

Scientists think?Earth's magnetic field?might urge migratory animals in the right direction like a guiding hand pressing on them. "I think it is similar to touch or pressure. The magnetite-based magnetic sense is innervated by the trigeminal nerve, which mediates touch (heat, cold and pain). If the inner compass needle of a cell points in a certain direction in space, and the fish makes a 90-degree turn, the cell will fire and tell the brain: 'I am 90 degrees out of my preferred direction,'" Winklhofer told LiveScience.
