Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as basis for Galaxy S3

Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad as basis for Galaxy S3

Looking for something a bit more solid than a third-party benchmark? We can do that. "Already in production the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May," the horse's mouth reveals. Samsung boasts that the new 32nm 1.4GHz quad-core processor flaunts twice the processing power over its predecessor, thanks to its High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power technology. The net energy savings? About 20-percent. "The application processor is a crucial element in providing our customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices," explains Hankil Yoon, Senior VP of Product Strategy Team at Samsung, "Samsung's next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multitasking features, thanks to Exynos 4 Quad's powerful performance and efficient energy management technology." Sammy says it's shopping the new processor around to other handset manufacturers (like Meizu), noting that the Exynos 4 Quad is pin-to-pin compatible with the Exynos 4 Dual (the brains behind the Galaxy S II and Note), which gives designers the ability to update product designs with minimal costs. Check out Samsung's full press release after the break.

A Jewish synagogue makes a comeback in Lebanon

The last remaining synagogue in Beirut is undergoing restoration, and will soon host its first rabbi in nearly 40 years. Only 150 members of the Jewish community remain in Lebanon.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Amid the new tower blocks that are changing this city?s skyline rises a newly restored symbol of Beirut?s multireligious society.

The Magen Abraham synagogue is the last Jewish place of worship to survive in Beirut, a lone reminder that a few decades ago a thriving Jewish community lived in the city center.

The Jewish faith is one of the 18 officially recognized sects that exist in Lebanon. When the synagogue was built in 1920 there were some 12,000 Jews in Lebanon. But the Arab-Israeli conflict and Lebanon?s devastating 1975-90 civil war spurred Jews to emigrate, and today there are only around 150 left here.

The last rabbi departed in 1975, and the synagogue fell into disrepair. Much of the structural damage was inflicted, ironically, by shelling from Israeli gunboats in 1982.

Restoration began two years ago and was funded by donations from Lebanese Jews both in Lebanon and overseas. The interior has been restored to its original d?cor with sky-blue walls, arched windows, and whitewashed columns with small brown painted streaks that mimic the fossilized shells in the original limestone columns. Work is expected to be completed by summer, and the first rabbi in nearly four decades is expected to arrive soon.

?Once the rabbi is here, we will be able to hold weddings again,? says a Jewish Council member in Lebanon who oversaw the restoration. He declines to allow his name to be quoted, illustrating that Lebanese Jews still prefer to maintain a low profile.

Homes green upgrade plan 'axed'

Plans to make anyone carrying out a loft or garage conversion pay more for environmental upgrades "will not happen", Downing Street sources say.

Proposals to require homeowners spend 10% of the value of any such work on energy efficiency improvements were unveiled in January.

It would extend rules for large developments to domestic improvements.

But senior Conservatives, including the prime minister, are reportedly opposed to the proposal.

Some critics have called the plans a 'conservatory tax', although the government says most conservatories will not be affected.

The Department for Communities and Local Government have been consulting on the changes to building regulations since January, when Lib Dem minister Andrew Stunnell said the coalition was "committed to being the greenest government ever".

Bonkers

According to the government there are around 200,000 domestic extensions and loft and garage conversions every year.

Under the plans homeowners would be compelled to spend 10% of the cost of their extension, or loft or garage conversion on draught proofing or insulation.

According to the Daily Mail, a source close to David Cameron said the plans were "bonkers" and "should never have been in the consultation".

Downing Street sources told the BBC: "This will not happen."

Tim Yeo, Conservative chairman of the Commons energy and climate change committee, told the BBC last week: "Compelling people who've applied for planning consent to make some alteration in their home to go down this route isn't necessarily going to help."

A Department of Communities and Local Government spokesman said the department had been "consulting on technical changes to building regulations, including energy".

Ministers would "consider the consultation responses carefully" before announcing their plans, he said.

The spokesman added that there were no plans to change regulations covering conservatories.

The government also stressed that plans for its flagship "Green Deal" programme were separate from the building regulations proposals and were not compulsory.

Under the Green Deal, private firms offer to make energy improvements to homes, then recoup payments from homeowners through additional charges on energy bills.

The consultation had suggested that it be "aligned" with the change in building regulations so that homeowners who did have to make energy efficiency improvements could take advantage of the deal "at no upfront cost".

Kogeto Dot

Many cameras and smartphones are capable of capturing stunning panoramic photos, with their wide field of views and expansive scenes, but few, if any, can claim to capture panoramic videos. The Kogeto Dot ($79 direct) is a truly unique gadget that turns your iPhone 4 or 4S into a 360-degree panoramic camcorder. The Dot is elegantly designed, and the videos are fun, interactive, and immersive for anyone viewing, even if the quality of the video leaves something to be desired.

Design and Use
The Kogeto Dot is a simple, lightweight accessory that easily snaps on and off your iPhone. However, you will have to remove any case you have protecting your iPhone, leaving it vulnerable to bumps and drops. The main component is the lens, which measures roughly an inch in height and 1.25 inches in diameter. It positions itself over the camera on the back of the iPhone, and employs an extremely thin plastic mount to stay securely in place. The whole effect is quite elegant, though the protrusion makes it a bit odd to keep in your pocket.

Once in place, you'll need to download Kogeto's Looker app, which is available for free in the Apple App Store. Start the app, calibrate the lens position (simply drag a marker to the right position) and you're ready to shoot 360-degree video, which Kogeto calls dotspots.

When Kogeto says "shoot 360-degree panoramic video from the palm of your hand," they really mean it. To get the best video, you have to hold your iPhone somewhat awkwardly, with the screen facing down in the palm of your hand. You can also grip the phone on the sides with your fingers, but in my tests, it was difficult to keep my fingertips out of the shot. The Dot provides pretty much no protection, making its screen-down use a bit precarious.

Check out a quick tour of the PCMag Labs using the Kogeto Dot. Click and drag within the video to see all 360 degrees.

Performance and Conclusions
The Looker app limits you to 8 minutes of video, but this never proved too short for my uses, and fits the novel purpose of the Dot. The quality, on the other hand, is pretty poor, with warped, pixelated video. The distortion is to be expected with such an odd lens, but the pixelation really detracted from the video.

Even so, watching the results is the best part. The videos don't show all 360-degrees at once; instead, you swipe back and forth to choose what you're seeing at any given moment. In other words, you have complete control of what you're looking at, in real-time, within the video as it plays. The effect is quite immersive, making for a great way to give virtual tours, or capture crowds and performers at a concert, to give just a few examples. Once you've recorded some dotspots, you can share them directly to Twitter, Facebook, and Kogeto's own website, making it fun and easy to share your videos with friends. Looker also has some basic video trimming and flipping options, for polishing your video a bit before sharing.

There really aren't a lot of options out there for 360-degree, interactive videos. Complicated cameras with multiple lens arrays can achieve a similar effect, but none are as simple and easy to use as the Dot. In terms of apps and iPhone accessories with similar functionality, outside of a few Kickstarter projects, the Dot stands alone. At $79, the Kogeto Dot is not cheap. But if you can deal with the grainy video quality, the end result is a truly unique, fun, and interactive way to capture any moment with your iPhone 4 or 4S.

Water Damage MN | Flood Damage Restoration | Done Right

Water Damage Insurance Claim | Insurance Restoration MN

You?ve just returned to your home after vacation to find a flooded basement, perhaps due to a sewer or septic backup or broken water pipe and realize that in order to be able to get your life back on track you will have to have your house repaired. Or perhaps a drain clog caused the water in your sink to back up and overflow, and now your kitchen is a virtual swimming pool, right inside the house. What to do?? Look for and bring out that homeowner?s insurance policy because you will have to file an insurance claim for water damage.

Water Damage Insurance Claims

The aftermath of a water damage event is not the time to discover what is and is not covered in your homeowners? insurance policy.? Too many people wake up to a flood, call their providers, and are politely told that they are on their own.? Insurance, as it applies to water damage, is a tricky situation.

It becomes of utmost importance for homeowners to learn and understand their insurance plans, knowing what is covered, what isn?t, and making the appropriate adjustments.? This is the only way to avoid being caught unawares when that upstairs pipe bursts or the local dam gives way.? Find out if your insurance will pay for water damage.

Filing a Damage Claim For Water Damage

Your responsibilities, as outlined in most residential property insurance policies, include, but are not limited to:

? Give prompt written notice to the insurer of the facts relating to the claim

? Protect the property from further damage

? Make reasonable and necessary repairs to protect the property

? Keep an accurate record of repair expenses

Your actions should include, whenever possible:

? Stop the water leak/flow

? Remove standing water and begin drying the area

? Photograph the damaged property

? Remove water soaked materials

? Keep removed materials and move them to a secure, dry and well-ventilated area, or outdoors

? Protect repairable and undamaged items from further damage

? Keep an activity log, including a record of all contact with your insurance company

? Keep all receipts

? Don?t throw away removed or damaged materials until instructed by your insurance company

? Don?t jeopardize your safety

? Don?t make large structural or permanent repairs

? Don?t exceed personal capabilities

By following these guidelines, you?ll be well on your way to properly taking care of any water damage situation in your home.

Creating a Home Inventory

Creating a home inventory is one of the most important steps you can take in order to make sure you are adequately insured?and it can make filing a claim in the event of a disaster much easier as well.

Now comes the hard but necessary part ? computing the damage costs. You?re probably at a loss, and don?t know where to start and how to do it. Here we?ll show you how and what to do step by step.

Call the Insurance Company

The first thing you?ve got to do is call your insurance company to inform them that you?re going to file a claim.

Make Temporary Repairs

Next, try to prevent further water damage from occurring by making temporary repairs. Make sure you keep the receipts for any repair work done, as payments for temporary repairs will be among those costs you will file for. What is important is that you?re able to arrest any water damage from further destroying your house. If you need to relocate, bring the receipts with you.

If there are any wet areas in your house, dry them and make sure there is enough air circulation to help speed up the drying process. This will help to minimize the growth of mold. Not everything that was damaged in your house may be eligible for insurance, so you must trust to save as much as you can.

Make a Home Inventory

Now you will have to separate the water damaged items from the undamaged ones, and make an inventory of the damaged stuff. Have a notebook ready, because you will have to list every single item that was destroyed.

We suggest that you work from room to room, listing the water damaged items in one room, then moving on to the next room. This will help you keep your list organized. Alternatively, you can group your list by category, such as all kitchen items together, all electrical equipment together, and so on. Make sure you don?t overlook anything, because once you submit your proof of loss, you may not be allowed to make any additions.

List every single piece of damaged item, making sure to include quantities, brand names, where you purchased them, the cost, model, and serial number. Describe in detail the damage to each item. Then, put in your estimate of the amount for each one. If you have receipts, attach them to your list.

Take Photographs for Proof

Your insurance company will need proof that the items you?re filing a claim for were really damaged, and the best way to show this is through photographs. A camera or a video camera will help, and will make it easier for you to substantiate your claim. Attach these photographs to your inventory.

Videotape or take wide-angle photos of entire rooms, which will help show the magnitude of a loss. If you use a video camera, you can record audio descriptions and make special comments. Take individual, close-up shots of expensive items and group shots of lower-value items. Zoom in on labels and special features, like signatures on artwork or serial numbers on appliances and electronics. Be sure to date each photo or use the date imprint function on your video camera.

When you inventory outdoor items, include bicycles, sporting goods, yard equipment and any other articles kept outside. While you?re outside, it?s also a good idea to photograph each side of your home?s exterior. Include your carport and other structures like a storage shed. Capture rare trees or shrubs and unusual landscaping. These things aren?t considered personal property, but it will be helpful to have a record of their appearance in case of a loss.

You Need A Water Damage Expert On Your Side

A professional water damage restoration contractor will use innovative methods for water extraction and removal that involves drying of carpets, rugs, mats, floors and walls to deodorizing and disinfecting effect that restores your damaged areas.

When your home or business suffers water damage there are a lot of different things demanding your attention. Designer Spectacles VS Cheap Prescription Eyeglasses

The way it is now, there are more reasons to cater to cheap prescription eyeglasses than going for the more sophisticated and sleek designer eyeglasses. While the need to accede to the fact that the present economic conditions call for all Americans to tighten belt is obviously logical and sufficient as a case for argumentation, it would be worth mentioning that there are peripheral and consequential conditions pertaining to the use of eyeglasses, albeit not unimportant.

Unwise Purchase of Expensive Eyeglasses

The American public is all agog about eyeglasses, especially of sunglasses, and most especially during summer. You can be one of these people who feel so strongly about this thing that it wouldn?t matter for you to cash it out up to the last dime for a pair of expensive eyeglasses (sunglasses) to the detriment of your next meal or the next mortgage premium.

You have to put it in mind that your use of this thing occurs only during the day as it would be the height of foolishness if you try strutting with it during the night. As a consequence, your shades are the most likely candidate to get thrown here and there after use. They get scratched and mercilessly battered around that you would soon find out you have spent 100 dollars or so on such a fragile pair.

Do not Be Deceived by the Designer Claim

Designer items such as designer eyeglasses are unfortunately bogus as they carry only the prestigious name of someone in the fashion industry. As such, they do not make these items themselves and so therefore, you are paying such a ridiculous price for what has been created by a licensing company.

In that case, you can buy cheap prescription eyeglasses without sacrificing quality if you wouldn?t mind the absence of the glaring logos. Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Armani and a hoard of other names wouldn?t have the monopoly of quality.

New Designer Items are Produced to Supersede Old Ones

It is the old business strategy that operates on and on, all for the purpose of making huge profits. These businesses are banking on man?s tendency to try new articles (styles) and to dispense of old ones. Designer eyeglasses also go with motion, a vicious circle that will only incur unnecessary and untimely spending which on its worse stage, can eventually throw anyone to bankruptcy.

Before you get into such a perilous situation, you need to tame that voracious instinct that is inherent in every man. Start with simple things and for as long as the situation does not demand to acquire costly purchase, maintain the use of inexpensive commodities. With this principle, you will be able to keep track of your finances and keep yourself out of financial troubles.

Boeing 787 set for first biofuel-powered flight tonight

Biofuel in planes is hardly a new idea, but when Boeing's latest and greatest aircraft gets in on the green game, we take notice. That's right, a ANA 787 Dreamliner is currently preparing to take off from Everett, Washington this evening and will make its way across the Pacific to Tokyo powered by biofuel. Well played, Boeing, we're all for celebrating Earth Day a little early, and it's always good to see someone giving Sir Richard Branson a run for his money.

Will SpaceX build a new launch pad in Texas?

The company known as SpaceX is considering building a rocket launch pad in the area near Brownsville, Texas.

Expansion-minded rocket venture Space Exploration Technologies Corp. may add a small Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico to its list of rocket launch sites.

The Hawthorne, Calif., company, better known as SpaceX, filed a document with the Federal Aviation Administration saying it was taking its first steps toward establishing a launch pad in Cameron County, Texas.

SpaceX already has a launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and is building a launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, northwest of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Company spokeswoman Kirstin Brost Grantham said SpaceX is considering multiple potential locations around the country for a new commercial launch pad. The area near Brownsville, Texas, along the coast, is a possibility, she said.

"There is a long way to go before this could happen," Grantham said.

Texas has long been associated with the nation's space program because of the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. But that's the mission control center, not a rocket launch site.

Only four U.S. states _ Virginia, California, Alaska and Florida _ have active launch sites.

The new document, which became public Tuesday, declared that SpaceX was preparing an environmental report for a possible launch pad and added that the company was gauging public opinion.

"SpaceX proposes to construct a vertical launch area and a control center area to support up to 12 commercial launches per year," the document said.

Gilberto Salinas, executive vice president of the Brownsville Economic Development Council, said that as a city in the southern tip of Texas, Brownsville was ideal for rocket launches.

He added that in the early days of NASA, Brownsville was considered as a possible center for space operations before officials settled on Cape Canaveral. "All these years later, we're glad to be looked at again," Salinas said.

SpaceX builds its Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon capsules in a vast complex in Hawthorne where fuselage sections for Boeing's 747 jumbo jets were once built.

The company also has a rocket-testing facility in McGregor, Texas. To date, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule have had two successful test launches from Cape Canaveral.

On April 30, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and unmanned capsule are scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral into space, where the Dragon will dock with the International Space Station in a demonstration for NASA. If it's successful, SpaceX would be the first private company to dock with the station.

StopTheHacker Web-Malware Scanning

You've installed antivirus protection for your company's PCs and set it to scan regularly, right? StopTheHacker Web-Malware Scanning (from $10/month) extends similar protection to your company's website. Depending on the level of service you choose, it will check whether your site has been blacklisted, detect known Web-based malware, detect as-yet-unknown Web threats, protect your corporate Facebook page, and even fix found threats automatically.

This is important stuff. A hack attack on your company website can be devastating. Customers won't thank you for infesting their PCs with drive-by downloads. Google and others may blacklist your site, marking it as dangerous in search results; getting off the blacklist can take time. Peter Jensen, CEO of StopTheHacker, states that at any given time 2.5 to 5 percent of all websites are infested with malware, and 75 percent are vulnerable to malware attack.

Levels of Service
StopTheHacker offers a free service that does nothing but keep track of blacklists and warn you any time your site gets blacklisted. Of course, once you've been blacklisted you're already in trouble, but knowing it happened is better than sailing along in blissful ignorance.

At the basic $10 per month protection level, StopTheHacker regularly checks all pages on your site for known viruses and Web-based malware. If the scan finds that a threat has been injected into your website's code it reports on the source of the problem, right down to the offending lines of code.
