(AP) ? Citing historically low mortgages, President Barack Obama is pressing Republicans to back housing policies the White House says would help struggling homeowners refinance their debts and prevent foreclosures.

Obama is blaming congressional Republicans for not passing legislation he proposed in February that would lower lending rates for millions of borrowers who have not been able to get out from under burdensome mortgages. Republicans have objected, citing among other things the estimated $5 billion to $10 billion cost of the proposal.

"Here we are - seven months later - still waiting on Congress to act," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Congress has recessed and is not scheduled to return until after the November elections.

"Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns," the president said.

Obama's push comes as home prices have been rising across the United States. National home prices increased 1.2 percent in July, compared with the same month last year, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index released Tuesday.

In the Republican weekly address, Arizona congressional candidate Vernon Parker said the U.S. corporate tax rate is pushing jobs overseas. He said he agrees with GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, "that we need to stop all the looming tax hikes and develop a pro-growth tax code that brings jobs home and keeps jobs here."

He also called for the repeal of Obama's health care law.

Momentum shift? Akin regains 2 Mo. endorsements

(AP) ? Some of Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's prominent supporters are reversing course and backing Missouri GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin's embattled campaign against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Former Missouri Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent said Friday they are now behind the candidate they once shunned for his remarks on "legitimate rape."

"As a Missourian, I believe it is vital to have a senator and a Senate who will cooperate in creating jobs, repealing Obamacare , and controlling federal spending and the federal deficit," said Talent, who is Romney's adviser on Russia and defense policy.

"Todd can win," added Bond, who has endorsed Romney.

Earlier this week, Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican who is Romney's liaison to Congress, endorsed Akin.

The trio would appear to be at odds with Romney, who suggested that Akin "accept their counsel" and leave the race back when they joined two other Missouri GOP elders ? former Sens. John Danforth and John Ashcroft ? in a formal statement forcefully urging Akin to exit the campaign. The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Akin has apologized for the rape comment for weeks but refused to leave the race. He lost the financial backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with GOP strategist Karl Rove, and there are no signs either group has plans to re-enter the race.

Some members of the Missouri Republican political establishment are switching course, though not everyone. Danforth still has not backed Akin, and multiple attempts by The Associated Press on Friday to reach Ashcroft were unsuccessful.

In his own statement, Bond pledged to help oust Democrats from the Senate majority and said Akin's rape comments "were unacceptable but he's apologized, I believe his regret is sincere, and it is time to focus on the national stakes in this election."

The endorsements came as Akin was answering questions about his characterization Thursday of McCaskill as not being very "ladylike" in a Sept. 21 debate.

Contrasting the approach with her 2006 debates against then-Sen. Talent, Akin said McCaskill "had a confidence and was very much more sort of ladylike and all."

McCaskill said Akin's remarks left her "a little speechless."

"I'm hoping that people will weigh in and defend me that I was polite and calm. This wildcat, you know, furious and unladylike is kind of a headscratcher," she said.

But Akin did not back off his assertion.

"We've got a couple words in the English language, one is a gentleman and a lady," Akin said Friday. "I think those are pretty self-explanatory terms, and I was using them just as the English language uses those terms."

While some appeared offended at those words, "it seems to me the offensive thing is the voting record that's destructive to the people of our state," Akin said.

In the Missouri House, where Akin began his political career, the rules of debate require lawmakers to refer to colleagues as "lady, gentleman or representative."

Also Friday, Akin said he had been arrested during an anti-abortion protest more than two decades ago, but he didn't provide details of where or when the event occurred.

In a video circulating widely on the Internet, Akin is seen discussing his involvement in an anti-abortion demonstration and says, "You know, don't tell anybody I'm a jail bird." He also says in the video that "a bunch of us sat in front of these doors and the police gave us a ride to the free hotel for a while, and you know how it goes."

Asked at a news conference Friday in Kansas City to confirm the arrest, Akin said: "Yeah, well, certainly. Probably about 25 years ago or so I was involved in some peaceful protests. As I've made very clear I don't apologize for being pro-life. I stand up for the things I believe in."

Akin's comments have loomed large in Missouri's Senate race since shortly after he won the Aug. 7 Republican primary. They also have generated ripples through national politics, including the presidential race and Republicans' efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Democrats have attempted to link Akin's "ladylike" comment to his remark about "legitimate rape" to suggest he is insensitive to women and to help drive their own fundraising efforts.

The Democratic National Committee and Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, both cited the remarks in fundraising emails Thursday. On Friday, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted Akin's remarks as the centerpiece of an online fundraising drive to raise $75,000 for McCaskill in two days.

Akin also received a recent fundraising boost, picking up the endorsement Thursday of the Senate Conservatives Fund, whose members pledged $290,000 for his campaign.

Exclusive: Chinese halt at flagship mine imperils Afghan future

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan officials are battling to convince nervous Chinese investors to restart work at a landmark $3 billion mine project and not to worry unduly about insurgent rocket attacks to salvage one of the country's big hopes of economic independence.

Western donors have focused on Aynak, the largest foreign investment project in its history which could help the country, now reliant on development aid, find its feet after most foreign combat troops leave in 2014.

But the giant Aynak copper deposit, among the world's largest, is situated in Logar province, one of the country's most dangerous, southeast of Kabul and insurgents aiming to wreck the government's flagship project have stepped up attacks.

After decades of war, many Afghans are resigned to the daily threat of roadside bombs and crossfire between NATO and insurgents. Civilian casualties hit a three-year high in August.

Most Chinese staff at the site, however, appear to have been spooked by Taliban attacks and left the country, with only a skeleton crew remaining to watch over equipment.

Afghan officials point out that the insurgents have not yet killed any Chinese workers.

"We had meetings with them (the Chinese investors) and assured them these rocket attacks happen anywhere and they are not the direct targets. We had repeatedly meetings with them but could not make them confident," Sardar Mohammad Sultani, acting deputy Minister of the Interior, told Reuters in his office.

"They left before any harm (was done to them). This was their own idea... It's up to them if want to return or not," said Sultani, in charge of the security force protecting the mine.

A spokesman for the consortium running Aynak, China Metallurgical Group (MCC) and Jiangxi Copper , confirmed some workers had been sent home indefinitely. It said unspecified "conditions" promised by the Afghan government in their contract had not been met.

He declined to link their departure to attacks, but said the government was working to improve security as the Afghan-NATO coalition targets insurgent strongholds in the east.

"The timing of those workers returning to Afghanistan will depend on conditions," the MCC spokesman told Reuters.

The project has been underway since 2007, with the Chinese companies overseeing the project about to start the final stage of construction, expected to take at least three years.

Even if work resumed tomorrow, it would be almost 2016 before any copper is extracted. Once fully operational, the mine could generate annual income of close to half a billion dollars, based on current copper prices.

International aid is already expected to fall short of the $6 billion a year required to promote economic growth, and a further $4.1 billion a year needed to secure pay the bill for the 350,000-strong security forces as NATO draws down.

So far, $4 billion a year through to 2015 has been promised.

TALIBAN THREAT

The Taliban say blocking the Aynak project has become one of their priorities, even as NATO claims a nine percent reduction in militant attacks.

"All government offices are corrupt and we don't believe that the money will benefit our nation, but will all be looted," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said by telephone.

"If they (the Chinese operators) get permission from us, their lives may be spared," he said, although the Taliban frequently exaggerate their reach and abilities.

The government-run Afghan force created this year to protect oil and mining assets -- when President Hamid Karzai banned private security firms -- is having difficulty protecting Aynak.

Despite increasing to more than 2,000 the number of security personnel at the site and installing extra checkpoints and wider security perimeters, rockets attacks have continued.

Afghan officials say they are doing all they can.

"We launched many operations. We detained a number of insurgents and killed a lot more. But our efforts haven't reached any conclusion," deputy minister Sultani said.

In a rare visit to Kabul this month by a top Chinese leader, bilateral deals on security were signed, including an agreement for police to be trained, funded and equipped with help from Beijing.

The government did not say whether the Chinese program was aimed at boosting security around China's oil and mining assets.

"This problem (insurgent attacks) exists all over the country. We are trying our best to clean the Aynak copper area from insurgents," Sultani added.

The threat is so severe that villages have warned the Afghan rights and anti-corruption monitor Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) to stay away as they can no longer guarantee their safety.

IWA reported there are four armed groups operating in the Aynak area, some aiming to stop the project.

And the attacks are becoming more deadly. At the start of September, an assault on the protection unit killed 15 Afghan policemen, spreading fear among local and visiting workers.

"There are new groups who are more brutal and make it difficult for us to go. There is one new group in particular that is quite opposed to the development of the mine," said the IWA's mining expert Javed Noorani.

Noorani said that most Chinese workers had been repatriated.

CHINESE SLUMP

Safety may not be the only reason.

Beijing officials may intend to delay the project amid China's worst economic slowdown in years, which has caused global copper prices to tumble and hit Aynak's investors hard.

Metallurgical Corp of China, which has a majority share in the mine, swung into the red in first six months of 2012. Net losses stood at 186.13 million yuan ($29 million), compared to net profits of 1,969.03 million yuan in the first half of 2011.

Jiangxi Copper performed slightly better, but profits in the first half of 2012 slid by 38 percent, compared to a 12 percent decline in global copper prices over the past year.

Social, environmental and economic concerns linked to the development of the mine also remain, Noorani added, including disruptions to water supply and displacement of villagers.

Some officials at the Ministry of Mines say China may be waiting for new mining laws to be passed by parliament to renegotiate the terms of the deal.

Proposals to draft new legislation have been backed by Western donors and the World Bank. But some cabinet members blocked proposed legislation in July, saying it failed to protect national interests from foreign exploitation.

A new proposal has been redrafted and is expected to be discussed in parliament within weeks.

Wrangling over the legislation is already holding up progress finalizing an investment deal with an India-led consortium at the Hajigak iron ore deposit in central Bamiyan province, worth up to $11 billion.

The government said last year oil and mining could contribute up $1.5 billion in revenue by 2016, but there is little prospect of achieving such figures while the legal framework is in limbo.

Ministry of Mines senior geologist and adviser Atiq Sediqi said the future of the industry depended on the legislation.

"If the mining law is not approved, no one will come to invest in the mining sector in Afghanistan and the revenue forecast by the government from the development of the country's mineral resources will become a myth," Sediqi said last week.

What's on Your Tombstone Q&A ? The Student Voice

Words by Michael Lu

?

Bob Halligan Jr. is a professor in the music and entertainment industries department at Syracuse University?s College of Visual and Performing Arts. He is also the lead vocalist and guitarist for Ceili Rain, a band he formed in 1995 that combines Celtic, rock, and contemporary Christian music. Halligan has had 140 songs recorded by well-known pop and rock artists, including Cher, Michael Bolton, and Judas Priest. He has published more than 975 songs and has sold more than 30 million units.

When did you first fall in love with music?

When we did show-and-tell in kindergarten, I sang the song The Night They Invented Champagne from the show Gigi. The kids and the teacher responded well.

When I was 11, I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, and that totally changed my life around. From that moment forward, I wanted to be them, and I?m still working on that.

The next moment is when I tried to write my first song when I was 15, and that got a tremendous response from my classmates. And it kind of said to me, maybe this is something that I?m meant to do.

What artists did you grow up listening to?

The Beatles. With them, it was their uniqueness and the amount of joy that was in their music. The fact that it was clearly by and for and about young people, but some of the older people enjoyed it too ? I thought that was great.

I also loved the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder, and later a jazz musician named Chick Corea. They all influenced my songwriting and composing in the sense that I learned their songs. By learning other people?s songs, you take it apart. You discover the nuts and bolts of why it?s good. Combined with studying music in college, it gave me insights to the structure and quality as well as the ?x-factor? of what these various groups did. It inspired me to reach higher in my own endeavors.

How did you decide music in any capacity was what you wanted to do with the rest of your life?

That was in April of my senior year in college. The guitarist in the band that I was in was going to off and become an architect. He then turned to me and said, ?You?re going to be a musician, right?? The gravity with which he asked this question, the certitude of how obvious who I was and what I should be, made it so ? from that moment forward, it was all that I cared about. Why not allow myself to be who I was?

How would you describe your experience working in the music industry?

I got to work with Jim Henson, which was pretty amazing. What he taught me was, work with great people and encourage them. That was one of the major lessons in my life, and I use that in my teaching. You look for what?s great in people and treat it like a flower, and make sure it gets sunlight and water and is able to grow.

I had plenty of ups and downs. I worked with a lot of fantastically talented people. I had the beauty of opportunity meeting preparedness, which is where my success came from. There seemed to be no lack of opportunity, in part because I sought it out, and when I smelled it, I went after it.

Who was your favorite artist to work with, and why?

I worked with writer-artists and then just pure writers. Among the artists that I worked with who I thought were great: Joan Jett, Michael Bolton, and Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

When you spend personal time with people, it expands into feelings of warmth and where you?re rooting for that person. You feel you get to know their essence. Michael Bolton had plenty of mixed reviews, especially male music critics, but I got to know him and root for him not just because he had songs I wrote, but because I believed in him. You don?t have to love every song that he sings or every note he sings to be on his side.

A lot of the artists like Cher, I never even met. I just wrote a song with another writer and it was submitted to her, and she selected it. I have had that happen twice with her, but never to this day have I met her. That didn?t stop from the royalty checks from being in my mailbox. (laughs)

How did Ceili Rain come about? How and when did you become also interested in Celtic/Irish and Christian music?

My wife became interested in Celtic/Irish/Scottish music and suggested that I combine it with rock ?n? roll. At first I thought it was a terrible idea, but when I tried it, I fell in love with it, head-over-heels. The spiritual aspect of the music sort of crept in with God?s hands ? or accidentally, depending on how you looked at it. Once I understood that it was there, I embraced it and made it a central tenet of what we were doing, that every song was, in essence, a prayer and would have a spiritual content. In many of the songs the spiritual nature is not overtly available to the listener, but it?s always there.

How does Ceili Rain compare with what you accomplished throughout your career?

I?m finally part of a group performing, whether recording or live. This is what I always wanted to do: make my own records and be the singer, or one of the singers, of a band. I had done that over the years, but without any significant success. It was songwriting for other people that got my foot in the door.

On my tombstone, I don?t want it to say that I made music for Kiss or Cher or whomever. I want to be known as the guy from Ceili Rain, because I feel that is my life?s work. It is Ceili Rain that I feel is the full expression of my identity,? artistically and otherwise. I?m glad that I got the chance to be me.

How did you become involved with teaching, and what do you wish to instill in your students about music and composing?

Professor David Rezak (professor of practice and director of the Bandler Program in VPA) brought me in. It was never something that I thought about, it was just something he introduced and I said yes.

As far as what I like to instill, I try to have all my courses be life lessons first and foremost, and music lessons second. It?s no good bringing music to the world if you?re not bringing yourself to the finest form. That?s my real passion in teaching. Any student, any musician, bring his or her best to the endeavor ? watching that unfold in their lives is a fantastic joy.

Earth cracking up under Indian Ocean

YOU may not have felt it, but the whole world shuddered on 11 April, as Earth's crust began the difficult process of breaking a tectonic plate. When two huge earthquakes ripped through the floor of the Indian Ocean, they triggered large aftershocks on faults the world over, and provided the best evidence yet that the vast Indo-Australian plate is being torn in two.

Geologists have spent five months puzzling over the twin quakes - of magnitude 8.6 and 8.2 - which took place off the coast of North Sumatra. Events that large normally occur at the boundary between tectonic plates, where one chunk of Earth's crust slides beneath another, but these were more than 100 kilometres from such a subduction zone. What's more, both involved rocks grinding past each other sideways with very little vertical movement - what geologists call strike-slip earthquakes. Yet strike-slip quakes this large had never been reported before.

Matthias Delescluse at the ?cole Normale Sup?rieure in Paris, France, and his colleagues have an explanation. They analysed quakes in the area since December 2004, when a magnitude-9.1 quake in a subduction zone near Sumatra triggered a devastating tsunami. They found earthquakes during this period were nearly 10 times more frequent compared with the previous eight years. What's more, 26 of the quakes that happened between December 2004 and April 2011 were similar to the 11 April quakes in that they involved rocks being pushed and pulled in the same directions.

Taken together, the events suggest that the Indo-Australian plate is breaking up along a new plate boundary, say the researchers, and that may account for both the location and the size of April's quakes (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature11520). Although both are currently on the same plate, Australia is moving faster than India. This is causing a broad area in the centre of the Indo-Australian plate to buckle. As a result, the plate may be splitting (see map).

John McCloskey at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, UK, is not yet convinced, saying the evidence from the April events is still too weak to support such a bold claim. But Lingsen Meng at the University of California, Berkeley, who studied the rupture pattern of the larger 11 April quake, is more confident. "I think it's a fair argument that the 11 April earthquakes may mark the birth of a plate boundary," he says. Things should become clearer as more earthquakes shake the region.

If they are anything like the 11 April events, the rest of the world may shake too. In another new study, Fred Pollitz at the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, and his colleagues found that the global rate of quakes with a magnitude of 5.5 or greater increased almost fivefold in the six days after 11 April - something that has never been seen before, even after very large earthquakes (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature11504).

"This was the most powerful event [ever recorded] in terms of putting stress on other fault zones around the world," Pollitz says.

96% The Imposter

All Critics (91) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (87) | Rotten (4)

The most fascinating aspect of the movie is why the missing boy's family believed the imposter's story.

You may begin to wonder if you aren't being conned by the movie yourself.

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

If you are a fan of true crime stories or the workings of the human mind, The Imposter will blow you away.

... both interesting and repellent.

An unnerving experience and a brilliant piece of documentary filmmaking that peels back the layers on one of the most perplexing stories

Layton layers "The Imposter" with powerful images in the dramatic re-creations, as well as a brooding soundscape and a concise pacing that distributes its information with the reserve of a good mystery writer.

"The Imposter" may be the first movie since "Penn and Teller Get Killed" whose title may need its own spoiler alert.

Every bit as engaging as it is well-shot, it proves once more that truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction.

A mixture of documentary, mystery and thriller, which recounts an astonishing true story that gets more outrageous with each revelation

Strange and intriguing, searching for that elusive essence known as 'the perfect truth.'

Rather like watching a magician pulling off a trick which your eyes cannot see, The Imposter offers its own strange kind of magic.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

It's an astounding story, truly, and Bourdin is the most chillingly sympathetic sociopath: frank, remorseless, matter-of-fact.

British director Bart Layton has only slightly fictionalised this extraordinary story for his documentary, which is told more as a thriller than a statement of hard fact.

"The Imposter" is one of the best films of the year.

Not only is the story riveting, but the film explores huge issues that really get under our skin

Open India: Considerations for Retailers - Vijay Govindarajan, Javed ...

India has rapidly emerged as one of the largest economies in the world, but it is also one of the most complex. Now, led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's insistence that "good economics is good politics," India has announced a new wave of reforms, seen by many as the most significant step since the ground-breaking "opening of India" in July 1991. The reforms include changes to retail, airlines, broadcast and power sectors.

The changes in retail are significant; Wal-Mart, IKEA, and Tesco can now compete against indigenous retailers in India. Fifty-one percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is permitted in Multi Brand Retail (MBR). State governments have been given a choice to participate. So far, ten of them have chosen to do so. But there are restrictions. For example, retail sales outlets may be set up only in cities with a population of more than 1 million. The terms set a minimum investment threshold at 100 million USD. Furthermore, at least 50% of total FDI must be invested in "backend infrastructure" within three years of the induction of FDI.

So how should businesses approach the new reality?
Cautiously. Already there is political backlash to Prime Minister's proposed reforms. Multinationals will succeed only if they allay the fears of ordinary Indians. Multinationals must use their global resources and capabilities to transform both urban and rural India and improve the lives of not just the rich but also Indians at the middle and bottom of the pyramid. Here are some considerations for businesses contemplating a Go-to-India strategy:

Market Selection

  • How will you select the states you want to start your Indian retail initiative?
  • What infrastructure needs exist and what will you have to build?
  • What are your competitors planning?
  • Who are the local partners best suited to help your company?
  • How do you build trust and verify the integrity of the market participants?

Inclusivity

  • Is your business committed to inclusivity?
  • How will your business impact the mom-and-pop kirana stores?
  • Are there ways to bring the kirana stores into your distribution channel?
  • What about the community?
  • What can you learn from other emerging markets (Brazil, Mexico, Kenya, etc.)?

Disrupting the Status Quo

  • Who are the players most likely to be impacted by your presence?
  • What are the dynamic change management techniques you want to use?
  • How do you monitor, understand, and relate to the local political climate?
  • How can we improve the businesses of our suppliers and local partners? Our consumers?

Business Model Innovation

  • How can multinationals develop innovative business models with "small store" formats to promote convenience, yet give consumers lower prices through economies of scale in purchasing and supply chain efficiencies?
  • What do our local customers value?
  • How can we give them access to the products and services they need?
  • What are responsible ways to sell without being exploitative?
  • How can we build trust into our business model?

Brand Integrity and Transparency

  • How do we educate the consumer in their best interest?
  • What can we do to independently monitor our supply chain?
  • How do we comply with FCPA and child labor laws, especially with our partners and suppliers?

Cultural Perception

  • How can we avoid colonial stereotypes?
  • What impact can we have on working with community leaders?
  • How do we respect local traditions while staying within our global values?

The list goes on and on and seems daunting. But do not turn away. The opportunity is big. Companies that learn to compete in India (and China) will be a force to reckon with across the world.

By 2020, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) projects that India's retail sector will become a $1.3 trillion market. In 2010, India was ranked 124th among 179 countries in Index of Economic Freedom World Rankings. Now perhaps, India's standing can finally be liberated ? as it takes its place at the global table.

'HabCam' Opens Unique Window on Seafloor Life

The oceans are getting the red-carpet treatment with a new project from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: HabCam, an optical imaging endeavor that provides researchers with a one-of-a-kind glimpse of the seafloor.

The "Cam" part of HabCam is a camera system that is towed over the ocean bottom along the continental shelf (where a continent drops off under the ocean) off the East Coast of the United States. The system snaps six images per second ? that's a half-million images per day; then, a process corrects the color and an algorithm stitches the pictures together to create a giant panorama of the seafloor. Each day, HabCam can capture 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) of ocean floor.

Amber York, a biology research associate at Woods Hole who works on HabCam, told OurAmazingPlanet that pictures have already sparked her interest: She has spotted an anemone and a worm that could be new species.

"As a biologist, I think what excites me more than anything about this project is the ability to see these organisms in a large scale in their natural habitat," York said. "A lot of these off-shore species are not as well-documented as the coastal ones on the beach. It's intense detective work trying to identify them." [HabCam Images: Peek Beneath the Waves]

Zigzagging over the seafloor

HabCam's 2-megapixel camera is towed on a large metal skeleton by a 103-foot (31 meters) sea scallop trawler, above coastal regions of the Northeast, including Georges Bank, the Mid-Atlantic Bight, and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.?To collect the photos, HabCam is towed from a ship and travels in patterns from zigzags to spirals through the ocean about 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 m) above the seafloor, collecting more than 40 million images in total. The newest version of the system also includes a side scan acoustics system that gathers information on seafloor roughness ? something that is difficult to see with the photos alone.

The pictures also give scientists a window into how marine life on the seafloor acts. In the past, biologists have used giant trawlers to scoop up critters and dump them on the deck of ships for analysis. The problem, York said, is that the creatures look different when they come up than they do in their natural habitat.

"They may change their color as they come up, or they get broken up too much in the process," she said.

HabCam also gives a peek into the way the creatures live on the floor. For example, sea stars were thought to be relatively spread out, but York has noticed that they tend to gather in armies ? she calls them hordes ? and eat everything in their path as they move across a scallop field.

Counting scallops and sea stars

The camera is helping scientists count scallops on the seafloor, and helping them understand the health of the ecosystem. Right now, it's being used to count scallops in a way that is much more rigorous than previous methods. They want to create a quantifiable marker for the habitat, including factors such as species richness, diversity, the composition of the material the creatures live on, and ecosystem change through time and over different areas. HabCam will help create an historical baseline for the seafloor health to be evaluated in the future.

Of course, it's a lot of work sifting through all those images. To help, those running HabCam have reached out to the Citizen Science Alliance and launched an interactive website called "Seafloor Explorer," where people can help identify scallops, sea stars and other creatures in the pictures. The project is starting with 100,000 images to annotate.

"We are interested in finding out what is happening to the seafloor over time, but we also need help in identifying individuals in all the photos," York said. The research group is working on a system to train computers to classify the images, but first they need people power to interpret what they're seeing.

York is positively pumped over the future of the field.

"I think this is just the start of a whole field of research ? imaging of marine life on the seafloor," she said.

(AP) ? Residents of a rural San Diego County community were waiting anxiously to learn the fate of homes near a destructive 4-square-mile wildfire that has left one man dead.

Christopher Kirchner told U-T San Diego that his rental home was about 200 feet from a residence that burned down ? one of 20 homes destroyed by the fire so far.

"I was just talking to some of my neighbors," Kirchner said. "They were crying and saying they had no place to go. We've heard rumors that our place is still standing, but nobody will tell us anything."

Firefighters recovered a man's body from one of the destroyed homes Monday, a state fire spokesman, Robbie Richard said. Authorities say the man ignored evacuation orders issued for the community of Tierra del Sol.

"He felt that he was going to be OK if he stayed," sheriff's Lt. Rose Kurupas told the newspaper. It was not clear whether he was notified of the order in person or by an automated phone call.

Authorities said neighbors reported the man missing when they saw his only vehicle parked at the home. Neighbors told U-T San Diego he was 82 and had only one leg.

Tierra del Sol remained under evacuation orders, though residents of two other small communities were allowed to return home as crews stopped the fire's march forward. A total of about 80 homes were evacuated at the fire's height.

The blaze has been fanned by winds that gusted up to 30 mph, spreading it across more than 2,400 acres of desert brush near the U.S.-Mexico border. Its cause remained under investigation.

The fire also damaged 10 and burned 15 outbuildings since it erupted Sunday, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. Mike Mohler. Many residents were gathered at the Golden Acorn Casino, which served as the command post for firefighters, to learn whether their homes were still standing.

Other blazes in the West remained active, blanketing some communities in eastern Washington state with smoke. The air quality in many Wenatchee and Cashmere areas was deemed either "hazardous" or "unhealthy" by state officials.

Authorities there updated the sizes of two of the state's largest fires after more accurate mapping and burnouts to create fire lines, officials said. The Wenatchee Complex of fires was reported at 82 square miles, while the Table Mountain fire had burned nearly 57 square miles.

Crews also gained ground on a 5?-square-mile fire in Montana's Musselshell County, allowing residents to return to about 50 homes southeast of Roundup. That blaze was human-caused and under investigation.

Barron's slams Facebook, stock falls

(AP) ? Facebook Inc.'s stock took a hit Monday after an article in the financial magazine Barron's said it is "still too pricey" despite a sharp decline since its initial public offering.

Though Facebook's stock has plunged since its May IPO, Andrew Bary at Barron's said the stock trades at "high multiples of both sales and earnings, even as uncertainty about the outlook for its business grows."

At issue is the shift of Facebook's massive user base to mobile devices. The company is still figuring out how to advertise to people who use their mobile phones and tablet computers to access the social network. Bary said success in the mobile space is "no sure thing" for the company. Mobile ads must fit into much smaller screens, which doesn't give Facebook "much room to configure ads without alienating users," Bary said.

Facebook also has what Bary called "significant" stock-based compensation expenses. Last year, the company issued $1.4 billion worth of restricted stock and $1 billion so far this year, he noted. Yet technology companies such as Facebook "routinely encourage analysts to ignore stock-based compensation expense ? and most comply. This dubious approach to calculating profits is based on the idea that only cash expenses matter," Bary wrote. "That's a fiction, pure and simple."

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook's stock fell $2.20, or 9.6 percent, to $20.66 in afternoon trading. The company went public on May 18 at a share price of $38, which it has not hit since.

Bary said he thinks Facebook's stock is worth $15, well below its current price even with Monday's drop.

"That would be roughly 24 times projected 2013 profit and six times estimated 2013 revenue of $6 billion, still no bargain price," he wrote.

Facebook declined to comment.

Last week, research firm eMarketer said it expects Google Inc. to surpass Facebook in U.S. display advertising revenue this year. In February, eMarketer predicted Facebook would stay ahead of Google. The social networking company had surpassed Google in 2011. But Facebook's ad revenue has fallen short of the expectations eMarketer set in February.

That said, some analysts are still bullish on Facebook. Last week an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald started coverage of its stock with a "Buy" rating and a target price of $26. The analyst, Youssef Squali, said he's "positive on the stock long-term" despite its botched IPO and the worry that Facebook's stock will be held down as employees become eligible to sell their stock in the coming months.

"We see significant opportunities ahead of Facebook, largely from brands moving online seeking mass reach and user engagement and from the explosion of mobile advertising in the next 2-5 years," Squali said in a note to investors.

Gaming crowdfunding platform Gambitious is live | Games industry ...

A new crowdfunding platform built specifically for games developers is now live.

Gambitious is selling itself as ?the first professional crowdfunding platform exclusively dedicated to the video game industry?. Though it takes its inspiration from the likes of Kickstarter, it differs in that it provides for both fan donations and equity investment.

The launch lineup includes seven titles, with a project by Duke Nukem?s 3D Realms also on the way.

Equity investing options are currently only legal in the EU, but it is expected that the practice will be legalised in the US in 2013. Until then American backers will only be able to participate via donations.

?Crowdfunding is causing a great seismic shift in how projects get funded, however, there are risks of crash-and-burn due to unfulfilled projects and unfinished games,? Gambitious CEO Paul Hanraets explained.

?Unlike other crowdfunding platforms, Gambitious is designed specifically for the video game industry and ups the ante of developer credibility, investor engagement and development cycle understanding.?

The day one lineup is as follows:

? ????????? Candy Kids by Abstraction Games, The Netherlands
? ????????? Cosmic DJ by Gl33k, USA
? ????????? Mushroom Men by Red Fly Studio, USA ?
? ????????? Piratoons by Fishing Cactus, Belgium
? ????????? Super Micro Heroes by Mutant Games, Spain
? ????????? Tink by Mimimi Productions, Germany
? ????????? Train Fever by Urban Games, Switzerland

Upcoming projects include:

? ????????? Earth No More by 3D Realms, USA ?
? ????????? Pantzer Pets by Gamundo, The Netherlands
? ????????? Stronghold Crusaders 2 by Firefly Studios, England
