Lesson Plan | Thank You, Thesaurus : Experimenting With the Right ...

Overview | Why use a thesaurus? Why does finding the precise word matter? In this lesson, students will explore the difference between the right word and the almost-right word and consider the advantages and disadvantages of using a thesaurus. Then, they choose from a variety of activities to go further in experimenting with word choice in writing.

Materials | Student journals; copies of the warm-up passages, either printed or projected for student viewing; bound, online, and thesaurus apps for student use

Warm-Up | Distribute or project these passages from the end of ?The Great Gatsby?. Tell students that the first is from the actual text. The second has been altered with the help of a thesaurus. (Note to teacher: You may, of course, try this exercise with any text by swapping out key words with the help of a thesaurus.)

The first version, from the original text:

Most of the big shore places were closed now and there were hardly any lights except the shadowy, moving glow of a ferryboat across the Sound. And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors? eyes ? a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby?s house, had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of all human dreams; for a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.

The second, rewritten version:

Most of the enormous seaside locations were shut now and there were barely any beams except the faint, transitory radiance of a ferryboat across the Sound. And as the moon mounted higher the useless mansions began to melt away until progressively I became aware of the ancient island here that bloomed once for Dutch sailors? eyes ? a brand-new, emerald chest of the contemporary world. Its lost trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby?s cottage, had once spoke in whispers to the final and best of all human aspirations; for a short thrilling instant man must have held his breath in the presence of America, brought into a gorgeous reflection he neither comprehended nor wanted, face to face for the last time in history with something equal to his ability for perturbation.

Ask students to read the two passages and compare them. Then ask the following questions:

  1. Which of these passages flows more smoothly and sounds better to your ear?
  2. Which words in the second passage seem awkward?
  3. What is F. Scott Fitzgerald expressing in the first passage?
  4. The first passage reflects what Fitzgerald actually wanted to say. How do the synonyms selected from the thesaurus in the second passage alter his meaning?
  5. What exactly is a synonym? Do words like ?wonder? and ?perturbation? mean the same thing? What about ?thrilling? and ?enchanted?? ?Inessential? and ?useless??
  6. What is connotation? How do the connotations of ?chest? and ?breast? differ? Why did Fitzgerald choose ?breast?? What about the connotations of ?green? and ?emerald?? What double-meaning does Fitzgerald seize upon by using ?green??
  7. Mark Twain once wrote in a letter, ?The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter ? it?s the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.? What does he mean? How do these two passages illustrate the importance of choosing precise words?
  8. According the thesaurus, it appears that the words we replaced Fitzgerald?s with were all synonyms, yet their meanings are clearly very different in some cases. What does this exercise teach about the limitations of using a thesaurus?
  9. When and how might a thesaurus be helpful?

Related | In ?An Ode to the King of Writerly Tools?, the writer Lois Leveen opines on the humble thesaurus and its role in helping her hunt down just the right word.

But to a true connoisseur, a lover of language, traveling Roget?s branching lines of categories and subcategories to explore subtle shifts in meaning provides its own adventure. In all the years my thesaurus and I have been together, I?ve found few things as gratifying as reaching for it, consulting numerous entries and reaping the reward of encountering an elusive word.
Finding the precise word matters. Take that last sentence: at first I wrote, finding the right word matters. Right wouldn?t have been wrong, exactly, but precise is more, well, precise. Although one of several words might convey the same general meaning in any given sentence, lighting on a word that does more makes prose memorable.

Background Vocabulary: Read the entire article with your class, then answer the questions below. You may wish to introduce students to the following words or concepts before reading: Roget?s, anachronism

Questions | For discussion and reading comprehension:

  1. Why did the writer write a love poem to her thesaurus?
  2. How does a Roget?s style thesaurus organize information differently from an online thesaurus?
  3. What advantage does the author see to Roget?s way of organizing synonyms?
  4. In what way can a thesaurus be a powerful tool?
  5. How can this tool be abused?

Activity | To give students practice using a thesaurus to choose precise words, engage them in any one of the following activities.

1. Overwrite, Ridiculously: Distribute the following ?plain vanilla? paragraph to students and challenge them in groups to use a thesaurus to write two different versions of it. (Or, write your own, perhaps creating a basic description of something specific to your school community, like a recent football game or a local hangout.)

It was snowing and the world was quiet and white. The trees were covered in ice that looked pretty in the sunshine. I walked down the path to our neighbor?s house and felt cold air on my face. When she opened the door, I smelled warm things cooking. It felt cozy inside. I went in and sat down on the couch next to the dog. He smelled funny. I looked out the window and thought ?this is nice?. I forgot all about the stuff I was worried about and enjoyed being stuck at my neighbor?s in the snow.

First, challenge students in partners or in groups to create a ridiculously overwritten version that has the kind of overblown, erudite vocabulary that students often think teachers and colleges want to hear. (That is, substituting ?five-dollar words? for as many simple words as they can.) Have them read their new versions aloud to decide whose is most over the top.

Next, ask them to take the same basic paragraph, but this time try to write a better version of it, with interesting word choices that enhance the writing but don?t overwhelm it. Students should again share their versions.

Finally, discuss these questions:

  1. Why were the overblown, over-the-top versions ineffective?
  2. How did you decide which synonyms to choose when looking for the right word, rather than the biggest (and therefore seemingly most impressive) word?
  3. In what ways did your second pieces wind up being more effective than the original version?
  4. What lessons does this exercise teach us about how we might most effectively use a thesaurus to revise our writing?

2. Improve Your Own Writing: Ask students to copy out a paragraph from an essay or story they are having trouble with and exchange them with partners. Ask the partners to then use a thesaurus (perhaps coupled with a dictionary) to help suggest other word choices, keeping in mind the lessons of Activity 1, above: the best word is not necessarily the most difficult word. Once students have finished, ask them to return their partner?s paper and discuss their ideas. Then, student writers can go forth with concrete suggestions for revision.

3. Translate a Passage From Literature: Have students play their own versions of the warm-up Gatsby game by ?translating? a passage from a text currently under consideration in the classroom and using a thesaurus in order to better understand the author?s choice of words. Ask them to take the passage and choose key words to replace in such a way that alters the meaning of the passage. Then, have students trade with partners and discuss how the word choice affects meaning. (One fun tool that might help them find the words to substitute: the Visual Thesaurus? ?Vocab Grabber.?)

4. Create a Class Thesaurus: Have students collaborate to create an ever-changing, always-growing, class-specific thesaurus on Wikispaces or Google Docs. So, for instance, in an English classroom, you might generate synonyms for overused words like ?shows? to help students move beyond ?This shows that?? or ?The author shows this?? In history, you might generate different ways to present dates or ways to vary word choice when discussing a theme like war or civil rights.

Going Further |
Assign groups of students each one of the following thesaurus or thesaurus apps.

Ask them to play around with their thesaurus for a bit and then evaluate it by answering the following questions:

  1. How user-friendly is this thesaurus? Is it easy to find the word you need? Why or why not?
  2. Does this thesaurus offer a variety of synonyms? How are they classified?
  3. What seems to be the most useful aspect of this tool?
  4. Would you recommend it? Why or why not? For what purpose might it be most useful?

Once they have evaluated their thesauruses, students review them for their classmates by sharing their findings and rating their thesaurus according to a four-star scale. (It might be fun to let students come up with their own rating titles ? using the thesaurus, of course.) Alternatively, students might write love (or hate) poems to their assigned thesaurus, as Ms. Leveen does, and share their reviews with the class that way.

San Diego panda cub is a 'little gift' (+video)

One hundred days after his birth, the San Diego Zoo's youngest panda received his name. Researchers say that due to the panda breeding program, the species survival seems more likely. ?

By Staff,?Associated Press / November 13, 2012

There is a new little gift at the San Diego Zoo that's going to get very big.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The zoo's youngest giant?panda?was officially named Xiao Liwu, Chinese for "little gift," at a ceremony Tuesday. He is on the small side, but is strong and cooperative, said Dr. Ron Swaisgood, a member of the zoo's?panda?team.

The cub was born on July 29 and was named 100 days after its birth, according to Chinese zoo tradition. Officials said the cub weighs 9.2 pounds (4 kilograms) and stretches more than 23 inches (58 centimeters) long from nose to tail.

Zoo officials got 7,000 suggested names, chose their top six and put them up for a vote. More than 35,000 zoo visitors voted on names that meant Little Gift, Miracle, Raindrop, Big Ocean or Big Sea, Brave Son and Water Dragon.

Xiao Liwu's mother is Bai Yun which means White Cloud and father Gao Gao, which means Tall Tall. The cub is Bai Yun's sixth. She turned 21 in July, making her the oldest giant?panda?known to give birth.

Through participation in a?panda?exchange breeding program with China, researchers "have gone from zero to 100 overnight in understanding the species," Swaisgood said. That's very beneficial for conservation because "it's hard to conserve what we do not understand."

He called the?panda?the world's "best loved species."

Before the program, the future of the species was bleak, he said, because the death rate exceeded the birth rate. But in 2010, "we met the 200 individuals needed to preserve the genetic diversity of the species," Swaisgood said to applause from the audience.

Swaisgood described efforts by scientists in China to track wild?pandas. A wild?panda?will leave about 50 droppings a day, he said, and scientists can learn a lot from that, including information about DNA, hormones and diet.

Swaisgood said those taking part in the breeding program have done a good job.

"There is a feeling of hope that things are turning around for the species and it has a brighter future than it did 20 years ago," he said.

Key property of graphene sustained over wide ranges of density and energy

(Phys.org)?A collaboration led by researchers from the NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology? has shown for the first time that charge carriers in graphene continue to behave as massless particles, like photons, over wider ranges of both density and energy than previously measured or modeled.

Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms, is a material of great scientific and technological interest in part because it conducts electrons at high speed.? However, in order for graphene to achieve its promise as a component of future electronic devices, it is important to understand at a fundamental level how charge carriers in the material interact with each other.? The researchers used scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of the magnetic quantum energy levels of the graphene charge carriers to determine the changes in velocity of the charge carriers.?

Using a CNST-developed technique called "gate mapping scanning tunneling spectroscopy," the researchers measured the energy levels as they changed the density of the carriers in the graphene by applying different potentials between a conducting gate and the two-dimensional graphene sheet.? They established that the graphene carriers retain a proportional relationship between energy and momentum?a "linear dispersion" characteristic of massless particles?across an unexpectedly broad range of energies and densities, from electrons to holes.? They were also able to show that when the density of carriers in graphene is lowered, the effect of each electron on other electrons increases, resulting in higher velocities than expected.?

These surprising results are important both for understanding the physics of future graphene devices and because they will help guide the development of more accurate theoretical models of the interactions between electrons in two-dimensional systems.

New MTV Show 'Catfish' Brings Online Relationships Into The Real ...

A new reality show called ?Catfish? debuted on MTV tonight. Based on a 2010 documentary of the same name, ?Catfish? is centered around couples that have met online, but have never actually connected in real life.

Nev Shulman found out the truth about a family he met online in the documentary ?Catfish?, and once people saw his story, they wrote to him sharing their similar situations. So many people reached out to him in fact, that he decided to start his own show to help couples who have solely interacted online, to meet face-to-face for the first time.

?It?s the first TV show that I know of that deals with Internet relationships, online dating and digital love,? Schulman said. ?If you?re on the Internet and you?ve ever met someone on a website or Facebook or through, many cases, Instagram, that you become friends with and then maybe you started chatting with and develop a flirtation with and you have feelings, you?re going to like this television show.?

[via MTV]

Of course, the obvious questions when it comes to online relationships are: ?Is the person I?m talking to lying about their identity?? And, ?Will the connection be the same in real life, as it is online?? ?Catfish? allows us to sit back and watch the awkward (and sometimes hilariously jaw-dropping) scenarios unfold right before our eyes.

Oh, MTV ? you?ve done it again.

Make An Income From Commercial Real Estate | Tic Tracker

There are a number of motivations that can drive you toward commercial real estate investment. The best rationale is built on your own fundamental knowledge of the market. When you glean knowledge from various sources, you can make a lot of money using commercial real estate. Below, you?ll find some great tips to help you start your commercial real estate career, or to add to your already wide breadth of knowledge.

Be clear about how much square footage is available. Commercial property can be effectively measured by how much square footage is actually usable by a business, whereas the physical total includes walls and uninhabitable or inaccessible areas. Knowing the amount of square feet you can do for both can make your process smoother.

Buying a larger property is great for a variety of reasons. The more units that are in your building, the more money you will get from renters. A lot of buyers won?t give a first glance to properties with nine or less units, and most buyers assume that more units equates to more money making potential.

You must absolutely confirm that your real estate?s asking price is realistic. A variety of different criteria require consideration in order to increase or decrease your property value.

TIP! Do a walk-through and close evaluation of each property you are considering. You should consider asking an experienced professional to come with you and examine the properties you have an interest in.

Investors of commercial properties should be mindful that the specter of massive inflation always looms on the horizon of the coming years. Many leases used to include clauses to protect investors from inflation that would adjust the lease according to the CPI (Consumer Price Index). If you do not plan for inflation or cover it in your contract, then you are at significant risk.

If you are checking out more than one property, draw up a checklist to compare the features of the different properties. Take this list with you as a reference when visiting other properties, and use it when speaking with the property owners. Do not be shy about mentioning that you?re also looking at other properties that day. You may even get a more favorable deal!

Brokers Represent

Negotiating is essential. Fight for the best price possible and make sure that all parties involved listen to you.

TIP! Always go through the disclosures of an agent before hiring him or her. Look for any disclosures regarding dual agency.

Different commercial brokers represent different parties. For example, some brokers represent landlords as well as tenants, while others only work with tenants. It might be more beneficial to hire a broker who works only with tenants, as he has more experience working with those searching for a property.

There are many benefits to building a personal relationship with your area real estate brokers, lenders and other investors. Many commercial properties are bought and sold without ever going on the open market. Having many people in your address book increases the chance that you are exposed to such deals.

Feng Shui

Know what your specific needs are prior to starting your commercial real estate hunt. You should write a list of which features are most important to you. For example, do you need a specific number of restrooms, a specific amount of square footage, or a conference room?

TIP! As you comb through possible brokers, search for those who have extensive experience in commercial markets. Look for brokers who specialize in commercial real estate.

Consider feng shui for your home office and your commercial real estate purchases. Two of the basic principles of feng shui, openness and a lack of clutter, are both features that are appealing to buyers, tenants, and customers.

It?s a good idea to purchase properties larger than you actually need when buying commercial real estate. Managing a slightly larger unit does really take that much more work, and doing so actually increases your profit on a per unit basis.

As mentioned earlier in this article, you could have a variety of motivations driving you towards commercial real estate investment, but all motivations require learning more about this field to find success. If you apply the advice you learned in this article to your own commercial real estate endeavors, you will be well on your way towards maximizing your profits.

Learn how each real estate broker intends to get you the best price before settling on one. Ask them about their background, such as what training they?ve completed or experience they have. You?ll also want an agent that conducts themselves professionally and ethically, and who has expertise in closing beneficial deals. Request additional information or examples of the results from previous negotiations.

TIP! Put your energy toward one investment at a time. Whether your investment choice is retail, land or rental buildings, choose one arena of investment to focus on exclusively for now.

hess grubbing: Personal Development Plans To Succeed In - Typepad

An action strategy can be built using Personal development plans and this is comprised of knowledge, goals and merits. This strategy can be of any type like occupation, studies, relationships, self improvement. Personal enterprise plan and individual development plans are the other names for this. Various skills are needed to achieve the goals, this is the process to analyze and learn those skills.

It is the combination of strength and fault, preparation and teaching, many more points. The goal behind the strategy makes them differ with each other. Academics are related to learning habits, occupational view includes lifestyle imports, arrangements, examination of risks and future steps. This is comprised of a portfolio in higher education. This portfolio is the reference to the academic achievements and leads towards higher order of achievements in the future.

The concept of self motivated learning is also used successfully in human resource management. These are the building blocks of employee CVs and it can be observed that many business training programs insist the students to prepare an individual portfolio. Even the governments practice this concept by preparing a list of goals for five years and by trying to accomplish those goals. This is a program which works under certain time frame and the task should be completed within that period.

A person must know where he is heading or else the path chosen is of no use. It is important to build a strategy to reach the goals in desired time. Universal truth is to write down your goals and act that will lead you towards your destiny. As per the researchers, the accomplishment of the task is possible if you write down your task and follow the time frame.

The system developed to achieve the goals must have some important points and that points can be listed as clarity to give a perfect view about the goals, purpose to show the need of that specific task, directions to fulfill the requirements of that task. Following 3 point system saves a valuable time and energy. This ensures the accomplishment of the goals. Strategic plan guarantees the success, no wishful thinking can.

Both educational and occupational fields can make use of this formula. In academics, students get benefits and these benefits can be enumerated as clearer projection towards the learning, self motivation, better understanding and performance criteria, low stress and better skill development, greater problem facing ability and thinking reflectively. These all collectively cause better academic achievements.

Benefits of strategy writing in professional life can be summarized as, it provides a clearer view towards the life and job you deserve brings confidence to make choices, improvises eminence and expertise, gives confidence to talk about your excellence with the employers, optimized problem solving expertise can be attained, results in a positive attitude and effective professional life. Employers expect the employee to be committed towards the work assigned. Rapid learning and good performance are needed for a successful professional life.

Betterment of private life can be attained with this strategy design apart from academics and occupational fields. The impacts on private life can be enumerated as better understanding of him, reaching the ambitions with better choice, finding the ways to reach the goals etc. The concept is useful in private, academic and occupational fields. Personal development plans are the stairs to success.

Election 2012: Investors Weighing Worst Case Scenarios | Breakout ...

It's taken the better part of two years and $2 billion dollars to get where we are in this Presidential election, and what do we have to show for it? A statistical dead heat, by most accounts, where only the most-partisan observers are willing to make predictions.

For those who are willing to wait and see, there is a growing sense of unease that, maybe - just maybe - we could be headed for that nightmare scenario again, where we wake up Wednesday morning not knowing who the next president will be. Many on Wall Street are predicting anything short of a clear voter verdict will upset the markets.

"If there is uncertainty as to the outcome of the election, than that is just another mountain of uncertainty with regard to the fiscal cliff and that is just going to be problematic for the stock market," says Hank Smith, the CIO at Haverford. "Time is running out."

And it's not only deferred fiscal cliff talks that have him worried. Another big unknown that could upset the investing world would be the rare circumstance where a candidate loses the popular vote but wins the electoral vote, and thus claims the White House. It's a situation that's happened three times before, but never to an incumbent President. Here again, I think concerns are overblown that markets somehow can't take it, or will freak out, if there's not an instantaneous answer or a clear consensus. In 1992, for example, President Clinton won just 43% of the vote, as a result of third-party candidate Ross Perot snagging 19%, and he was able to assume the office and bring a divided nation together.

See Related: Awaiting the End of Uncertainty? Don't Hold Your Breath

And that is exactly what the next president will have to do too, no matter how muddled the outcome might be.

"I think (whoever wins) is going to have to reach across the aisle," Smith says. "We have huge issues. We've got to have comprehensive tax reform, a grand bargain that includes entitlement spending reforms."

While Republican control of the House and Democratic control of the Senate are not expected to change, Smith is of the mind that, after four years in hiding, bipartisanship is set to make a comeback -- no matter who wins the White House.

Please answer our poll question below: Which candidate do you believe is better for your money?

(AP) ? Someone has to introduce the president.

On Monday, the final day of the presidential campaign, President Barack Obama, however, didn't bring along an opening act. He brought along two main acts.

Bruce Springsteen. Jay-Z. Theirs wasn't an introduction, it was pop culture moment.

The Boss was spending the entire day with Obama, traveling on Air Force One from Madison, Wis., to Columbus, Ohio, and then to Des Moines, Iowa, where Obama planned a coda for his campaign, a finale where his run for the presidency began five years ago.

Jay-Z boomed his way into Columbus's Nationwide Arena, performing a rendition of his hit "99 Problems" with a political twist for a crowd estimated by fire officials at more than 15,000 people. He changed a key R-rated word to make his own political endorsement. "I got 99 problems but Mitt ain't one," he sang.

"They tell the story of what our country is," Obama said of the two performers, "but also of what it should be and what it can be."

Springsteen added a whole new sense of vigor, even giddiness, to the Obama entourage, with many of the president's aides and advisers clearly star-struck by the rocker's presence.

Springsteen, in jeans, black boots, a work shirt, vest and leather jacket, was not wearing the typical Air Force One attire. But the Obama camp has left formality aside; many aides are growing beards through Election Day and ties have been left behind in favor of sweaters for the chilly outdoor events during the last hours of the campaign.

Asked if there was any downside to using celebrity glitz instead of substance to drive voters to the polls in the final days, Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki laughed. "I think Bruce Springsteen might be offended by you calling him glitzy," she said.

"Bruce Springsteen, and some other celebrities who have been helping us, reach a broad audience that sometimes tune out what's being said by politicians," she said.

As Psaki spoke to reporters at the back of the plane, Obama was up front and on the phone with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie discussing the recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Christie, who says he has attended more than 100 Springsteen concerts, said Obama then handed the phone to Springsteen, a New Jersey native whose songs often have been tributes to his youth in the state.

Upon landing in Columbus, Springsteen told a reporter that it was his first trip on Air Force One. Grinning, he said, "It was pretty cool." As for New Jersey, he said, "I'm feeling pretty hopeful" that the state's hard-hit shore will recover.

In Madison and Columbus, Springsteen serenaded audiences with renditions of top anthems "No Surrender," ''Promised Land" and "Land of Hope and Dreams." But he also has a custom-made campaign song named after the Obama motto "Forward" ? which he acknowledged was "not the best I've ever written."

"How many things rhyme with Obama?" he asked.

Obama, no doubt, didn't mind.

"I'm going to be fine with Bruce Springsteen on the last day that I'll ever campaign," he said above the din of the crowd.

"That's not a bad way to bring it home. With The Boss. With The Boss."

No Comments - ANTIQUES AND ART IRELAND - Art Auctions and ...

A Georgian carved fireplace centre panel. (Click on image to enlarge).

One of a pair of early Irish Regency corbel heads from a fire surround.

A collection of 14 Irish Georgian and Regency marble panels by the Dublin based Courtenay family of stone carvers comes up at Matthews auction in Oldcastle, Co. Meath on November 13. They come from the collection of a family who came to Ireland in 1610 from the village of Courtenay, north of Paris, to work on the rebuilding of the vault of Christchurch Cathedral in Dubin, which had collapsed.

For the next 400 years the family lived as an uninterrupted line of stone carvers?within walking distance of the cathedral. The collection of panels being sold were originally centrepieces for fireplaces they worked on or reclaimed from fire surrounds broken up in the Victorian era. They contain Grecian style head carvings, urns and depictions of Diana and Neptune. The panels are estimated at 200-300 each.

Let VSP's Vision Insurance Save You Money

by Angie on November 5, 2012

I?ve worn glasses or contact lenses since I was seven years old. ?I realized I couldn?t read the board in class (chalkboard, not whiteboard like they have today). ?I still remember riding home with my new glasses and crying with happiness because the trees looked so beautiful. ?I had no idea what I?d been missing! ?The last time I bought new glasses I needed bifocals, so my glasses came with a lesson in how to use them when reading, working at a computer, and walking up and down stairs. ?They literally wouldn?t let me leave until I?d proved I could walk up and down a flight of stairs without falling, which struck me as funny, but extremely thoughtful.

Vision exams and corrective lenses are expensive, but let?s face it ? they are a necessary expense. ?And VSP Vision Care can help you save money and keep your eyes healthy while still looking your best. ?In fact, you can save an average of $320 per year with VSP Vision Care insurance, and that?s nothing to sneeze at in today?s economy! ?Check out SeeMuchMore.com to see just how much you can save with their interactive savings calculator. ?Many families don?t have vision benefits, and consumer studies have shown that people using VSP Vision Care insurance pay substantially less for their glasses than those who don?t have coverage.

Insurance plans like VSP Vision Care provide you with a frame allowance and?fully cover the cost of basic lenses?(perfect for kids!) ?They also provide discounts on lens options including progressive lenses,Transitions??lenses, anti-reflective coating, scratch-resistant coating and UV protection. ?My personal favorite is the anti-reflective coating, which keeps glasses from showing glare in pictures. ?I know that sounds trivial, but after spending most of my life with a glare spot in every single picture taken of me it?s been wonderful having pictures in which I can actually see both my eyes! Here?s a picture from Halloween of me in my favorite glasses: they are progressive lenses with an anti-reflective coating, and I love them!

See how there?s glare on the glass I?m holding, but none on my glasses? ?That?s what I?m talking about :) Everyone?s style is different (as I found when shopping for glasses with my thirteen-year-old son recently) so it?s comforting to know that you can use your VSP Vision Care insurance for anything from classic frames to the latest designer trend.

Probably not what I would have selected for him, but he?s crazy about them!

Visit?SeeMuchMore?for more information about VSP and vision care benefits.?This post is sponsored by?VSP. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of?Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

The Passionate Foodie: Thanksgiving Recipes & Wine Pairings

In a few more weeks, it will be the Thanksgiving holiday and I am sure many people are already starting to make plans on how to celebrate. You might be trying to select a restaurant, deciding not to cook this year. You might be dining at home and trying to plan a menu of food and drinks for all your guests. You might be dining at the home of family or friends, and have been asked to bring a dish or a bottle of wine. So many decisions so I am here to offer some helpful suggestions that might ease your tension and worries.

Let me begin with some general advice, a sentiment which you should embrace. Stop?worrying that everything needs to be perfect because it will never be perfect and it doesn't have to be perfect. This is a holiday where family and friends gather, to share everything they are thankful for and not to complain and nitpick about silly and irrelevant issues. It is a time for fun and enjoyment, to relax and chat, to eat and drink, to savor the day together. As long as people enjoy themselves, as long as the food and wine is good, no one will complain or even care about whether it was "perfect" or not, whatever that term might mean. Just everyone being together is perfect enough.

Now, I'll provide some more specific advice:

Sometimes you just want to avoid all the time and effort of cooking a big Thanksgiving dinner, as well as cleaning up the mess afterwards. You might decide to dine out instead and you will find plenty of others opt for that same decision. Plenty of?restaurants are offering Thanksgiving specials and you can check out my short list of?over?7 Restaurants?in the Boston area, including Post 390, Aura, Avila, BOKX 109, Pantry at the Verve, Towne Stove & Spirits, and the various Legal Seafood restaurants. Keep an eye on my upcoming Thursday Sips & Nibbles columns?as I may have more restaurant suggestions as well.

If you are cooking at home, or need to bring a dish to someone else's home, then let me suggest some relatively easy, but quite delicious, recipes. I have compiled for you a list of five such Easy Thanksgiving Recipes,?including Buffalo Chicken Dip, Sangria, Double Corn Pudding, Special Potato Casserole and Swedish Apple Pie. Just about anyone can make these easy recipes, and your family and friends should really enjoy the results. Plus, these recipes aren't just appropriate for Thanksgiving and you can enjoy them at any time. Buffalo Chicken Dip while tailgating? Sangria for your next wine party? Swedish apple pie for Sunday dessert?

Choosing wines for Thanksgiving can seem intimidating but it really is not. Please don't worry about what wines to choose. Start by reading some general advice I previously wrote,?Thanksgiving: I Want Wines To Make People Smile. I hope that will help decrease your worry over wine selections. There are so many good choices for Thanksgiving wines. If you do though want some more specific?wine recommendations, and are willing to think outside the box, then why not consider Sherry or Sake, both which are very food friendly and would pair well with your Thanksgiving feast.

Whatever you do for Thanksgiving, enjoy yourself and appreciate all that you have, rather than worry about what you do not.

Broadway lights go up in post-Sandy NYC

Pedestrians huddle under their umbrellas in Times Square, Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in New York. Hurricane Sandy continued on its path Monday, as the storm forced the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds and soaking rain. (AP Photo/ John Minchillo)

(AP) ? The lights went up again on Broadway Wednesday for the first time since Hurricane Sandy hit New York, as entertainers headed back to work in a city still wracked by power-outages and a suspended subway system.

Though some Broadway shows, including Disney's "Mary Poppins" and "The Lion King" remained dark Wednesday night, the curtain was to rise for many of the other 38 shows, including "Cyrano De Bergerac." Patrick Page, who plays the villain Comte de Guiche in the production, was heading back to the theater for a matinee performance, even if he was unsure if there would be anyone in the seats.

"Broadway is as important an icon of New York City as the subways, so to get back to work is a sign that we can bounce back," he said. "This has been such a tough time for so many and it's vital that we show the lights are on and there's great work being done onstage."

Page said he spent a restless time off in his Upper West Side neighborhood, worried about his in-laws along the New Jersey shore ? he is married to actress and TV personality Paige Davis. He said he checked Facebook to find out how friends were fairing, obsessively watched the news and went out to check that neighbors had ridden out the storm.

"We're New Yorkers," he said. "We'll get through this."

The company of "Peter and the Starcatcher," the Tony Award-nominated prequel to Peter Pan, faced some tense moments before their Wednesday matinee. Five of their dozen cast members live in Brooklyn and faced a dicey commute. For instance, their Peter Pan, Adam Chanler-Berat, didn't fly to the theater ? he biked.

As the 2 p.m. show loomed, all the cast was in place, except for Isaiah Johnson, who plays Captain Scott. Playwright Rick Elice and co-director Roger Rees, who were both at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, each was ready to go on if he didn't make it. He did ? but only five minutes until curtain.

In downtown theaters, though, the stories were grim.

The SoHo Rep was without power and had some flooding, while MCC Theatre had no electricity Wednesday. The Barrow Street Theatre was dark and facing the prospect of canceling additional performances of "Tribes" while they await power. The Bank Street Theater is without power and its basement is flooded, forcing the Labyrinth Theater Company to put off the first preview of their "Radiance." One of the cast members of Eve Ensler's "Emotional Creature," playing on 42nd Street, lives in Long Island, has no electricity and may not be able to get to tonight's performance.

All Broadway shows planned to be back on schedule Thursday and some even managed to turn the mess into promotions. "The Performers" was offering a "Sandy Special" of $29.50 for top tickets, while the Roundabout Theatre Company let patrons with MetroCards buy tickets for $20 to its "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."

New York's late-night TV hosts were back in swing, though, with all resuming regular production Wednesday. The remaining holdouts ? Jon Stewart with "The Daily Show" and Stephen Colbert with "The Colbert Report" ? were to join David Letterman ("The Late Show"), Jimmy Fallon ("Late Night") and Jimmy Kimmel ("Jimmy Kimmel Live"), who is doing a week of shows in Brooklyn, on the airwaves.

All were to tape with a live studio audience Wednesday. Out of safety and caution, Letterman taped Monday and Tuesday's episodes in front of an empty Ed Sullivan Theater, but it will again be full Wednesday. Fallon did the same at Rockefeller Center on Monday.

Other New York cultural institutions were forced to continue to cancel planned events. Carnegie Hall, which sits on 57th Street near the hanging crane, announced that its Thursday concerts were postponed, after having already done the same for Wednesday night's performances. Lincoln Center swung back into business Wednesday, with the exception of a handful of events. Performances were also to resume at the Metropolitan Opera.

For many, figuring out exactly when to reopen business was a daunting and uncertain decision. While parts of the New York transit system have been restored, predictions on when subways, commuter rails and power to the southern end of Manhattan have generally been vague. Knowing when both performers and audience can get to their stages, TV studios and concert halls has been a day-by-day waiting game.

The Keep a Child Alive foundation announced Wednesday that the 9th annual Black Ball, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed. Alicia Keys was to host, Oprah Winfrey was to be honored and Beyonce was to perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom event, which raises money to fight AIDS in Africa.

Robert De Niro's Tribeca Enterprises, the umbrella organization that includes the annual Tribeca Film Festival and the film distribution company Tribeca Film, has remained closed and without power. The organization's nonprofit arm, the Tribeca Film Institute, on Wednesday canceled its annual benefit which was to be a special screening Thursday for the James Bond film "Skyfall." It has been postponed until Monday, and cast members are no longer able to attend.

Film and TV production in New York has ceased outside of sound stages, as the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting said it would not grant permits to shoot in exterior locations throughout the five boroughs until at least Saturday. Production on shows from "30 Rock" to "Gossip Girl" has been affected.

"The city has not issued any location permits this week, so probably the earliest we'll be able to shoot is this weekend," said Warren Leight, executive producer of "Law & Order: SVU." ''We are able to do some location scouting tomorrow and we have our production meetings by phone, with people on their cells and calling from their cars. The main issue is going to be getting power restored."

Some celebrities sought to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Edward Norton on Wednesday kicked off a crowd-funded relief effort via the website CrowdRise.com, with money donated from various companies to help spark giving.

"We wanted to make it easy for people to quickly support relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy through reliable organizations and, even better, to have the impact of their dollars doubled," said Norton. "So CrowdRise has rallied a bunch of great companies committed to matching the funds raised through our page."

Rihanna, who was honored at a Halloween carnival in West Hollywood on Wednesday night, expressed the special concern felt by many celebrities on the West Coast who spend a lot of time on the other coast. "I am really devastated at what's happening," she told The Associated Press. "There is nothing we can do to control it. That is what makes it so difficult. We just have to be there for each other no matter what."

The storm made a mess of Henry Winkler's birthday plans. The one-time TV "Fonzie," rode out the storm safely in upper Manhattan but his thoughts were with those suffering in New Jersey, Long Island and lower Manhattan. He turned 67 on Monday.

"It made my birthday insignificant," said Winkler, who stars as a veteran porn star in the new Broadway comedy "The Performers." ''Just to be able to take a walk was pretty terrific. You think you know how to plan for a storm after all these years and then it makes history. All those millions of people affected, it breaks my heart."
