It's a 'Dancing With the Stars' reunion!

Kevin Lynch / GSN

By Anna Chan

Yes, we know, it's a loooongwait until "Dancing With the Stars" returns for its 14th season on March 19. But in the meantime, the Game Show Network has a little present for fans: a photo of various celebs and pros who have participated in the flashy ballroom bash over the show's many seasons.

Season 13 champ J.R. Martinez, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Ralph Macchio, Mel B., Gilles Marini, Audrina Patridge, Derek Hough, Lacey Schwimmer and Chaz Bono all posed together for a GSN photo that the network said made " 'Dancing With the Stars' history." The reason for the snapshot? To celebrate the network's acquisition of "DWTS" reruns.

GSN recently announced on Dec. 15 that it will begin airing season four of the ABC dance competition beginning on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. The episodes will air every Saturday through March 3. The celeb competitors for that season include, Apolo Anton Ohno, Heather Mills, Joey Fatone, Leeza Gibbons and others.

Will you rewatch (or watch for the first time) season four while awaiting the new batch of ballroom hopefuls to show off their moves? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

President Plays 90 Rounds of Golf: Another Historic Obama First!

by Ben Johnson, The White House Watch

Our history-making president has done it again! Barack Obama has played 90 rounds of golf during his three years in office, something observers say is an historic first for any president. Keith Koffler of the White House Dossier reports:

That?s about three months of golf, given that the excursions generally take about five hours ? much of the useful portion of the day.

What?s more, it?s the 32nd time he?s been on the links this year, a record for the president. His 32 outings eclipses the 2010 mark of 30 and is far ahead of his 2009 tally of 28 rounds as president.

Obama broke the record during his Hawaiian vacation.

Add this to the U.S. credit downgrade, poverty reaching a new high, and two lesbians giving a Navy ?first kiss? as another historic Obama first!

(AP) ? Wailing and sobbing mourners beat their chests and dropped to their knees as North Korean President Kim Il Sung's hearse, draped with a red flag and bedecked with white magnolias, crawled through the streets of Pyongyang in 1994.

But even as they cried out on a hot summer's day for the leader they called "Father," they began pledging their loyalty to his son, leader-in-waiting Kim Jong Il, who cut a solemn and somber figure in a dark blue suit, a black band wrapped around his left arm.

Same setting, different season: Similar shows of grief are expected when North Korea lays Kim Jong Il to rest in a winter chill during two days of funeral ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday. As in 1994, the events will be watched closely for clues to who will gain power and who will fall out of favor under the next leader, his son Kim Jong Un.

---

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jean H. Lee, the Associated Press bureau chief for Korea, has made 11 trips to North Korea since 2008, including eight visits this year.

---

This state funeral, however, is also likely to bear the hallmarks of Kim Jong Il's rule, including more of a military presence for the man who elevated the armed forces as part of his "songun," or "military first," policy.

Kim, who has been lying in state since he died Dec. 17, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son and anointed successor to the world.

"A display of weapons may also be a way to demonstrate that the military remains loyal to the succession process," said Ahn Chan-il of the World Institute for North Korea Studies in South Korea. "There may even be a small-scale military parade involving airplanes."

Like his father was in 1994, Kim Jong Un has appeared stoic in a dark blue Mao-style suit in appearances at Kim Jong Il's bier ? but so far without the black armband that Kim Jong Il wore at the funeral to mark him as head mourner.

Kim Jong Un would have been a boy when his grandfather died, and there's no sign of the young Kim in footage of the 1994 funeral. But it's clear from footage of him during the mourning period for his father that he is well-schooled in the behavior expected as heir to the nation's leader.

The 1994 funeral is likely to be the template for this week's events.

At the time, details about the funeral in a country largely isolated from the West were shrouded in mystery, revealed only after state TV aired segments of the events in what was the world's best glimpse of the hidden communist nation.

Most foreigners aside from those living in North Korea were shut out, and the same is expected this week, though Rev. Moon Hyung-jin, an American citizen and son of Seoul-based Unification Church founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon, is planning to attend Wednesday's funeral, according to church officials. The Moon family has business ties with the North.

In 1994, the formation of the funeral committee was examined closely for signs of who was expected to rise in power in the post-Kim Il Sung era; observers likewise dissected the 232 names on last week's list.

When Kim Il Sung died, it was unclear whether North Korea would hew to traditional Korean mourning rites or follow rituals seen elsewhere in the communist world.

According to the official account, what appeared to the world as North Korean ritual was a highly personal response by Kim Jong Il, who is credited by his official biography with choreographing every detail of his father's funeral.

The biography says it was the son who proposed turning the massive assembly hall where his father worked for 20 years into a public place of mourning ? and then, a year later, into a permanent shrine where Kim Il Sung's embalmed body still lies.

Kim Jong Il's biography also gives him credit for breaking tradition by picking a smiling image of the late president taken in 1986 instead of the somber image typical for Korean funerals.

To this day, the portraits that hang in every building and on the lapels of nearly all North Koreans show a smiling Kim Il Sung. And since Kim Jong Il died, pictures erected at mourning sites across the nation show him beaming as well.

The official biography says Kim Jong Il picked one of his father's neckties for the body and ordered the portrait bedecked with magnolias, the national flower, not traditional black ribbon.

After the closed-door funeral, Kim was seen in the footage leaving the hall and standing on a dais sheathed in red, surveying the scene alongside top party and military officials as the black Lincoln Continental bearing his father's body departs the palace grounds to a military salute.

A car with the massive portrait ringed with white magnolias led the motorcade, followed by the hearse bearing the president's body, and then a phalanx of police in white helmets riding on motorcycles in a "V'' formation.

Kim Jong Il and other members of the funeral committee followed slowly in sedans. Soldiers in jeeps flanked the procession.

North Koreans lined the streets and filled the air with theatrical wails, many of the women in traditional black dresses and with white mourning ribbons affixed to their hair.

The procession reached the central square that bears Kim Il Sung's name, where hundreds of thousands of mourners were waiting. The hearse circled the square before returning to the assembly hall for a gun salute.

A similar procession may be in the works for Wednesday, but with the late leader's trademark red "kimjongilia" begonias replacing the magnolias, and snow and frost as a backdrop.

State media said a national memorial service for Kim Jong Il would start midday Thursday and include an artillery salute, three minutes of silence and locomotives and vessels blowing their sirens.

Footage Tuesday from Associated Press Television News in Pyongyang showed long lines of people carrying wreaths and bunches of white flowers toward a building with a huge picture of a smiling Kim Jong Il on its facade. They piled flowers beneath the photo, bowing and crying as they stood in the cold. Some pledged their loyalty to Kim Jong Un. Light traffic flowed through Pyongyang's streets, people drinking hot tea at makeshift tents set up on the sidewalks.

The funeral for Kim Jong Il, who made it state policy to revere his father as North Korea's "eternal" president, will likely be similar to Kim Il Sung's but probably not outdo it, said Prof. Jeong Jin-gook of the Daejeon Health Sciences College in South Korea.

"Kim Il Sung still remains the most respected among North Koreans," he said.

Kim Jong Il may have put his personal stamp on his father's funeral, but so far Kim Jong Un is sticking to tradition. From the blue suit to the solemn bows before the begonia-bedecked bier, the young leader-in-waiting has closely followed his father's cues.

Still, he is credited with one directive that seems likely fodder for his official biography: According to state media, he instructed the city to keep mourners lined up in subzero temperatures warm with hot water and tea.

Samsung Is Buying Sony's LCD Television Business

Samsung will buy Sony's stake in a joint-venture LCD television business for $939 million, ending the company's partial ownership of the business, The Verge reports.

Sony will still retain a partnership with Samsung to purchase LCD panels, but it'll be at market price and the company won't be responsible for manufacturing them any more, according to the report. Here's are the details from The Verge:

The split comes?after rumors of the dissolution?were first reported in October and follows?Sony's November announcement of a?$1.2 billion annual loss?due to weak demand from its loss-leading television division coupled with a strong yen. Samsung will acquire all of Sony's 50 percent share for 1.08 trillion won (about $938.97 million) and convert the joint venture into a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Asian stocks down on mixed US, Japan economic news

(AP) ? Asian stocks markets fell Wednesday, with trading thinned by year-end holidays and mixed economic news out of the U.S. and Japan.

Benchmark oil remained above $101 per barrel while the dollar strengthened against the euro but fell against the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell marginally to 8,430.32. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.7 percent to 18,503.67, while South Korea's Kospi lost 1.1 percent to 1,822.73. Australia's S&P ASX 200 lost 1.2 percent to 4,091.30. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia were also lower.

Bucking the trend was the New Zealand NZX 50, which rose 0.7 percent to 3,236.90. Falling between the Christmas holiday and New Year's, trading throughout the region was generally light.

Japan's industrial output dropped a seasonally adjusted 2.6 percent last month ? the first decline in two months. But the negative news was mitigated by expectations of rebounding manufacturing and production this month and next, which helped to keep stock market losses minimal.

In mainland China, investors were "dumping shares" because Beijing has failed to take steps they expected to stimulate slowing economic growth, said Peter Lai, investment manager for DBS Vickers in Hong Kong.

"Some investors believed there would be a reduction in interest rates or the bank reserve ratio. But this hasn't happened. That is why people are dumping shares," Lai said.

Lai said some investors are moving money from China to the United States or Europe on hopes for better economic conditions and bigger returns.

The Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.7 percent to 2,151.97. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index sank 1.8 percent 838.25.

Tokyo Electric Power dropped 12.3 percent, a day after Japanese Industry Minister Yukio Edano suggested that the embattled utility be put under temporary state control and warned the company against resorting to electricity bill hikes.

TEPCO operates the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, which was heavily damaged in the March earthquake and tsunami, and owes massive compensation payments to people and companies harmed by a nuclear disaster at the plant.

Hong Kong-listed property shares also slumped. China Vanke Co. fell 2 percent and China Overseas Land & Investment slid 3 percent.

China Mengniu Dairy, the country's biggest dairy company, plummeted 22.6 percent in Hong Kong after acknowledging that a cancer-causing toxin had been found in milk produced by the company. Mengniu apologized and said no tainted milk had made it to the market. The government blamed the problem on bad feed given to cows.

On Wall Street on Tuesday, the Dow Jones lost less than 0.1 percent to close at 12,291.35. The S&P 500 was up marginally to 1,265.43. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.3 percent to 2,625.20.

U.S. consumer confidence surged to an eight-month high, but home prices fell in 19 of the 20 cities tracked by the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index. That report dampened investors' enthusiasm about a jump in consumer confidence to the highest level since April.

Benchmark crude oil rose 2 cents to $101.36 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.66 to finish at $101.34 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currency trading, the euro fell to $1.3062 from $1.3069 late Tuesday in New York. The euro has been weak because of worries about Europe's government debt crisis. It is still trading just above an 11-month low of $1.2943 reached on Dec. 14.

The dollar fell to 77.76 yen from 77.85 yen.

East Bay roots sprout a Texas Longhorn by way of Hollywood, selfless service and combat

By Jeff Faraudo
Bay Area News Group

Nate Boyer has made a lifetime's worth of surprising choices in the decade since he left Valley Christian High in Dublin: aspiring actor, working with autistic children in Los Angeles and refugees in Darfur, joining the Green Berets.

But none, perhaps, is more stunning than this one.

When Cal plays Texas in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday, Boyer will be on the sidelines for the Longhorns -- a 30-year-old walk-on defensive back who never had played football before making the team.

Boyer probably won't play, but his mere presence -- and his personal story -- have inspired his teammates all season.

"Everybody knows Mr. Boyer," said Joe Bergeron, a 19-year-old freshman running back.

"He's got unique life experiences," said defensive backs coach Duane Akina. "When he can convey what it's like to be deployed and we're in (training camp) two-a-days, it shows there's no reason for us to be feeling sorry for ourselves."

Boyer, who grew up in Pleasanton picked Texas after he left the Green Berets. He went there largely because his GI Bill benefits covered his school costs.

Upon arriving in Austin, Boyer decided to try out for the football team even though, at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, "I was not a physical specimen."

Boyer never told the Texas coaching staff that he hadn't played football before. But he didn't fool Akina, the Longhorns' assistant head coach in addition to coaching the defensive backs. Akina

spotted Boyer as a newbie "the first time I saw him running around" he said, chuckling.

It didn't matter. Boyer outworked other candidates at a tryout last year, and made the cut.

"They threw me into the fire with a bunch of guys," Boyer said. "It's like trying out for the Special Forces. So much of it is mental toughness."

Although Boyer mostly stands on the sidelines during games -- his only appearance was on special teams -- Texas coach Mack Brown calls the reserve safety a valued member of the squad.

"He's a great young man," Brown said. "His character and determination are things we can all look up to. As he told (our players), you can't have a bad day when you're in the military."

Boyer didn't intend to become a role model. After graduating from Valley Christian, he flirted briefly with junior college, then followed his acting aspirations to Hollywood.

To make ends meet, he took a baby-sitting job that involved caring for an autistic child, and that led to doing therapy with autistic children in L.A.

"He's always had this thing about the injustice of the world, the unfairness," said his mother, Laura McDowell-Boyer.

After reading a magazine article about genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, Boyer told his parents in 2004 he wanted to fly to Africa to work in the refugee camps. They gulped and gave him their blessing.

"I'd never been to a place like that," said Boyer, who worked in camps on the Chad side of the border. "It was mostly children and women. All their husbands were off fighting or had been killed."

The experience in Africa, coupled with the memory of the 9/11 attacks on New York, convinced Boyer to enlist in the Army. This was a tougher endeavor for his parents to embrace. Boyer's father, Steve, is a racehorse veterinarian and his mom is an environmental engineer. Both have Ph.D.s and expected their son would attend college.

Instead, he told them he planned to try out for the Special Forces unit after basic training.

Africa prepared Boyer for some of what greeted him in Iraq, but not all. In his first week, a bomb killed a fellow soldier.

"You're thinking, 'OK, this is real,'" he said.

He spent part of his time in Iraq training local military forces in the An Najaf province, earning him the Bronze Star.

By 2009, Boyer's active enlistment was up and he transitioned to the National Guard reserves. He also began looking at colleges.

Boyer is studying kinesiology at Texas and hopes to pursue an MBA. But spending time with his teammates is the best part of his day, he said.

Blake Gideon, a four-year starter for the Longhorns and Boyer's roommate, has worked with him from the start, helping him with football techniques that he knew nothing about.

"His military experience has shown in his willingness to learn and get better every day," Gideon said. "It didn't matter that he didn't play before. He's making up for that."

Boyer has three more years of football eligibility and is working to become a long-snapper for field goals and punts; it's another way to get on the field.

While an appearance in the Holiday Bowl is a long shot, Boyer had a day to remember Nov. 5 during a game against Texas Tech.

With is parents in the stands and the Longhorns were well on their way to a 55-20 victory, Boyer was sent in to help on kickoff coverage -- his first play in a college-football game.

Earlier in the game, Boyer was watching from the sidelines as Bergeron scored one of his three touchdowns.

"Everybody's cheering for him," Boyer recalled, "and he came right up to me, all pumped up. He looked me right in the eye and said, 'That one's for you.'"

Said Bergeron: "It was basically saying, 'Thank you,' and that I'm playing for him."

Pro-Union Tejanos lynch secessionist judge

On this day in 1862, an armed group of 100 pro-Union Tejanos captured and hanged the wealthy rancher Isidro Vela, the chief justice of Zapata County and an outspoken supporter of the Confederacy, in the presence of his family. Vela was born in Mexico in 1798 and served as president of the secessionist meeting held in Zapata County in December 1860. He and the other landowners in the area strongly supported secession, in contrast to the mostly Hispanic local populace. Guerrilla warfare ensued, as pro-Union, anti-Anglo bands staged raids into Texas and retreated into Mexico. In April 1861 Vela had faced down a band under the leadership of Antonio Ochoa, a follower of Juan N. Cortina who threatened pro-Confederate county officials, and later that year had been forced to seek refuge with a neighbor when another such band raided his ranch. After Vela's death, Capt. Refugio Benavides caught and defeated the raiders near Camargo, Mexico. Papers seized in the battle implicated Leonard Pierce Jr., the United States consul in Matamoros, as an instigator of the raid.

Sadrists call for new elections in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The political party loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called Monday for the dissolution of Iraq's parliament and new elections in another move that could escalate the country's growing sectarian crisis.

The anti-American Sadrist bloc is a partner in the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Bahaa al-Aaraji, the head of the Sadrists' bloc in parliament, said the elections are needed because of instability in the country and problems that threaten Iraq's sovereignty.

"The political partners cannot find solutions for the problems that threaten to divide Iraq," he said.

Iraq plunged into a new sectarian crisis last week, just days after the last American troops withdrew at the end of a nearly nine-year war.

Al-Maliki is in a political showdown with the country's top Sunni political figure, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, after the government issued an arrest warrant for al-Hashemi on allegations his bodyguards ran hit squads targeting government officials.

The prime minister threatened to form a government without al-Hashemi's Sunni-backed political party, Iraqiya, which is boycotting parliament and mulling whether to pull out of the ruling coalition.

Iraq was dominated by the minority Sunnis under Saddam Hussein until the U.S.-led war that began in 2003 ousted him. Majority Shiites have dominated the government ever since, though Americans pushed hard for the inclusion of Sunnis with a meaningful role in the current governing coalition.

Bitter sectarian rivalries played out in 2006-2007 in violence that took Iraq to the brink of civil war and the latest tensions have raised fears of a resurgence of Shiite-Sunni violence.

The political crisis taps into resentments that are still raw despite years of efforts to overcome them. The Sunnis fear the Shiite majority is squeezing them out of their already limited political role. Shiites suspect Sunnis of links to militants and of plotting to topple the Shiite leadership.

The Sadrists have played an important role in maintaining Shiite domination over government ? their support last year catapulted al-Maliki back to the prime minister's office for a second term.

For the proposal to dissolve parliament to gain traction, it would take the consent of at least 1/3 of parliament, the president and the prime minister or a simple majority of lawmakers. Al-Maliki, who only secured his position after nearly nine months of political wrangling after the last elections, would likely be loathe to go through the process again and risk an unfavorable outcome.

Al-Aaraji said the proposal first needs approval of the larger coalition between the Sadrists and al-Maliki's alliance, the two most powerful Shiite parties.

A Shiite lawmaker loyal to al-Maliki, Kamal al-Saiedi, said the proposal should be studied.

"Forming the current government was not an easy issue, therefore going back in the direction of new elections would be more difficult," he said.

A Sunni lawmaker with Iraqiya, the Sunni-backed bloc of the wanted vice president, said new elections would not bring security and stability. He pointed to the prolonged negotiations that were needed to agree on the government in place now, and said a new election would only bring the same people to office.

"We need to sit around the same negotiating table and that is the only path to salvation from this current crisis," said Kamil al-Dulaimi.

The new political crisis has been accompanied by a new wave of attacks on the Iraqi capital by suspected Sunni insurgents linked to al-Qaida.

A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32, officials said. Police and hospital officials said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building.

Also Monday, a roadside bomb hit a passing army patrol in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and injuring two, a police officer and a doctor said.

Al-Maliki's adviser for National Reconciliation Amer al-Khuzaie, said leaders of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, one of the top Shiite militant groups, had decided to lay down their weapons and join the political system.

Asaib Ahl al-Haq, or Band of the People of Righteousness, was a splinter group from the Mahdi Army, also headed by al-Sadr. They, along with the Mahdi Army, were two of three Shiite militant groups active in Iraq that were dedicated to fighting the U.S. military presence.

Al-Khuzaie said the group had signed an agreement in recent days renouncing violence. He said they would change their name and join the political process. He said he had been negotiating for months with the group, who said they would join the political process after the U.S. military left Iraq. All American troops departed on Dec. 18.

Officials from the group were not available to confirm the decision.

U.S. officials have warned that these Shiite militant groups could turn against the Iraqi government after the American military has gone. A key test to whether Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-funded group, is committed to becoming a peaceful part of the political process is whether they actually turn in their weapons, especially the more powerful and sophisticated weapons they're believed to get from Iran.

Lions rip Bolts, earn first playoff spot since '99

3 years after 0-16 debacle, Detroit gets back to postseason on Stafford's 3 touchdown passes

DETROIT - Matthew Stafford led a victory-lap parade around the perimeter of Ford Field, high-fiving fans that have been waiting since 1999 for the Detroit Lions to make the playoffs.

With the crowd chanting "Play-offs! Play-offs!" as the final few minutes ticked away, Detroit clinched a postseason spot thanks to Stafford's three touchdown passes in a 38-10 win over the San Diego Chargers on Saturday.

Stafford appeared to be touched by the face-to-face interaction with fans hanging over the railing to reach his raised right hand.

"You could just get a sense of how much it meant to them," Stafford said. "It was fun to give them that kind of joy."

The Lions (10-5) have won three straight after a seven-game slump to earn an NFC wild card, turning around the franchise after it was bad enough just three years ago to become the league's only 0-16 team.

It was coach Jim Schwartz's idea to reach out and touch the fans.

Week?15 in the NFL

??Some of the best photos from this week in the NFL.

"There's going to be a time that we don't celebrate getting to the playoffs, but it's not going to be tonight," Schwartz said. "It's been a long time coming."

No one has been waiting longer than owner William Clay Ford.

Ford, whose first season leading the franchise was in 1964, was handed a keepsake in the jubilant locker room.

"We gave him the game ball," said center Dominic Raiola, who endured a string of miserable seasons after Detroit drafted him in 2001.

After Raiola's postgame news conference, he gave Stafford a bear hug.

"I'm excited for them, more than for myself and some of the other young guys," the 23-year-old Stafford said.

Music blared in Detroit's locker room, where players hugged teammates and anyone else who crossed their paths. Smiles might've outnumbered beads of sweat after a lopsided win that ended San Diego's playoff hopes.

According to the Chargers (7-8), they were eliminated from playoff contention. San Diego will miss the postseason for a second straight year after making it five times in a six-season stretch.

And, that might cost coach Norv Turner his job.

"I've been concentrating every week as well as I can on getting this team ready to play and doing the things we need to do," Turner said. "We all know that's something that's discussed at the end of the year."

San Diego stayed in playoff contention deep into December by winning three straight games, but couldn't overcome its midseason losing streak.

"When you lose six in a row in this league, you're probably not going to the postseason, but we fought our way back in it," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said. "You're hanging your hat on running the table, and going to beat playoff teams on the road, it's tough."

Knowing they could move into the postseason simply by winning, the Lions held San Diego scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when Rivers threw an 11-yard pass to Malcom Floyd to make it 24-7.

Detroit, though, closed strong to restore the rout.

The Lions and Buffalo Bills started the season with the league's longest playoff droughts at 11 seasons. Detroit's wait is over because a decades-long search for a franchise quarterback ended with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

"That's probably the key to a franchise is having a good quarterback and we'll hold onto him for a while," Schwartz said.

Coming off the league's only 0-16 season, Detroit selected Stafford and kept him healthy for the first time this season.

Stafford was almost perfect in the first half against San Diego, completing 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards with three TDs. He capped the first drive with a 7-yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew, threw a 3-yarder to Kevin Smith in the second quarter and connected with Calvin Johnson from 14 yards just before halftime to give the Lions a 24-0 lead.

"His numbers at halftime were outrageous," Raiola said. "He's the real deal."

Stafford finished with 373 yards passing to give him 4,518 this year, breaking Scott Mitchell's single-season team record from 1995. Perhaps not coincidently, that season marked the last time the Lions had double digits in wins.

The Lions will go for their 11th victory and try to improve their playoff positioning on Jan. 1 against Green Bay, a team they haven't beaten on the road since 1991.

The Chargers needed to extend their winning streak to four games to keep their postseason hopes alive, but the loss and Cincinnati's victory dashed them.

They had chances to come back.

Eric Weddle recovered an onside kick after San Diego finally scored in the third quarter, but the Chargers stalled inside the Lions 5. Cornerback Chris Houston broke up a pass in the end zone and the Chargers had to settle for Nick Novak's field goal and a 14-point deficit.

Detroit's potent offense quickly gained 48 yards on a third-quarter drive with passes to Nate Burleson and Johnson, setting up Smith's 6-yard TD and a 31-10 lead.

The Chargers then drove to the Detroit 2 and turned over the ball on downs, firing up its sideline and the fans who have been waiting a long time for a season like this one. It's the first time the Lions have made the playoffs since Ford Field opened in 2002.

"This is an accomplishment," Schwartz said. "It's a big step for our team and our organization."

San Diego, meanwhile, has taken another step back.

Rivers was 28 of 53 for 299 yards with a too-late TD and two interceptions, the second of which defensive end Cliff Avril snagged with his right hand and returned 4 yards to make it 38-10 late in the game.

Antonio Gates had four receptions to give him 588 in his career, breaking the Chargers record of 586 set by Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner, in his hometown of Detroit in front of family and friends.

"They were all here," Gates said. "It's just disappointing that we couldn't get a victory along with me crossing that milestone."

NOTES: Johnson matched a single-season team record with 15 TD receptions. ... Chargers LB Na'il Diggs, who had trouble defending Pettigrew, left the game in the third quarter with cramps in his right leg.

(AP) ? North Korea is showing the uncle and key patron of anointed heir Kim Jong Un wearing a military uniform with a general's insignia ? a strong sign he'll play a crucial role in helping the young man take over power and uphold the "military-first" policy initiated by his late father, Kim Jong Il.

As North Korea prepares for Kim Jong Il's funeral Wednesday, it is also warning South Korea against barring visits to Pyongyang by civilian groups hoping to pay respects, saying the obstruction will lead to "catastrophic consequences" for relations between the rivals.

While millions continue to mourn Kim Jong Il, North Korea is offering hints about Kim Jong Un's rise and the future composition of his inner circle. North Korea began hailing Kim Jong Un as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military over the weekend as it ramps up its campaign to install him as ruler.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million.

Koreans should become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim Jong Un, "the sun of the 21st century," the North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Sunday in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

State television showed footage Sunday of a uniformed Jang Song Thaek and his nephew Kim Jong Un paying their respects before Kim Jong Il's body, which is lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. Seoul's Unification Ministry said it was the first time Jang, usually seen in business suits, had been shown wearing a military uniform on state TV.

Jang, a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, is the husband of Kim Kyong Hui, younger sister of Kim Jong Il and a key Workers' Party official. South Korean lawmakers say intelligence officials have predicted that Jang and his wife will play larger roles supporting Kim Jong Un.

The new titles, a public show of support from top military leadership and the symbolic appearance of Jang in uniform send strong signals that North Korea will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

North Korea is in official mourning until Kim Jong Il's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

South Korea has permitted only two groups with ties to North Korea to visit and pay condolences ahead of the funeral and has rejected demands by several others.

The South Korean groups, led by the widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and a business leader whose late husband had ties to the North, plan to cross the heavily fortified border Monday for a two-day trip, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

On Saturday, Kim Jong Un again visited the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to KCNA.

Earlier, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper urged Kim Jong Un to accept the top military post: "Comrade Kim Jong Un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people."

Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on him.

Kim Jong Un was promoted last year to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of discussions with the U.S. on food aid and restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program. Chronically short of food and suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials had been asking for help feeding its people even as North Koreans prepared for 2012 celebrations marking the 100th birthday of Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founder and the late father of Kim Jong Il.

Also, animosity with South Korea still lingers after two incidents blamed on North Korea killed 50 South Koreans last year.

Calls to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, come amid displays of grief across North Korea.

On Sunday, the North's state TV repeatedly showed footage of wailing uniformed soldiers, many with shaved heads, and other citizens professing their tear-choked longing for Kim Jong Il as they visited mourning sites.

In Pyongyang, workers at drink kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful, thick parkas. State media said the drinks were arranged at the instruction of Kim Jong Un, who ordered officials to take special measures to protect the health of mourners.

"Deeply moved by the measures, all of the Korean people feel that Kim Jong Un is the leader of the people, as great as Kim Jong Il," KCNA said.

Last-minute shoppers dash for stores

It's that time for caroling, eggnog, holiday cheer ? and for some, a frantic dash to the mall.

Last-minute shoppers hit stores on Christmas Eve in a surge that retailers hope will top off a strong holiday shopping season.

Among them was Len Boswell. He started his shopping at 6 a.m. at Starbucks. Later in the morning he was at a CVS drugstore in Decatur, Ga., picking up candy and a neck pillow for his wife.

"I should have done this a couple of weeks ago," acknowledges Boswell, 68, a director of book publishing at a nonprofit.

Stores are expected to ring up $469.1 billion during the holiday season, which runs November through December. The final week before Christmas can account for up to 20 percent of those sales. Retailers tempered their expectations heading into the season because they worried that Americans weren't ready to spend in the weak economy.

Story: Shoplifters taking bigger piece of holiday pie

But sales have been brisk during the two-month period, rising 2.5 percent from the start of the season on Nov. 1 through last Saturday, according to research firm ShopperTrak, which did not give a dollar figure. As a result, ShopperTrak upgraded its sales growth forecast to 3.7 percent from its 3 percent estimate heading into the season.

"We're seeing good traffic, good sales," said Sherif Mityas, a partner in the retail practice at A.T. Kearney, a management consulting firm. "Even with all the bad news and hesitancy in terms of the economy, consumers are still opening up their wallets more than last year, which is good news."

But at a time when Americans are still concerned about high unemployment, stagnant wages and market uncertainty, retailers aren't willing to leave anything to chance on the final shopping days before Christmas.

Toys R Us and some Macy's have been open 24 hours a day in the days leading up to Christmas. At malls, Abercrombie & Fitch has been offering a blanket 50 percent off on all items while J. Crew and Madewell offered 30 percent off. Retailers' promotional e-mails are up 34 percent from a year ago, according to Responsys, which tracks e-mail activity from more than 100 merchants.

"They're clearly putting their best foot forward on promotions right now," said John Morris, analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Morris estimates that promotional sale activity is up about 7 percent compared with last year, taking into account the level of markdowns and the amount of goods marked down.

What to shop for in the post-Christmas sales

Whether it's the sales or just plain-old procrastination, last-minute shoppers were drawn to stores across the country on Christmas Eve.

Taubman Centers, which operates malls across the country including The Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey and Beverly Center in Los Angeles, reported almost-full parking lots at some malls by 10 a.m., earlier than last year. Apparel, electronics, perfume and jewelry were among the biggest sellers.

Macy's, in New York's Herald Square, also was packed with shoppers by late morning. The store has been open around the clock since Wednesday and was set to close at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Kimberly Sylvester, 28, was out for the first time doing her holiday shopping Christmas Eve. She had already spent $160 at Victoria's Secret, taking advantage of a sale ? two bras for $40 ? for her sister. At Macy's, she picked up Lauren by Ralph Lauren sheets marked down to $79. Sylvester, who works with special needs children, said she has been too busy to shop.

Story: Shoppers winning 'game of chicken' with stores

At Manhattan Mall in New York, there was a steady stream of shoppers Saturday morning.

Shamek Shider, 22, was among them. He had spent $100 at Macy's on snow suits for his goddaughter on Friday, his first time out holiday shopping. He came back on Christmas Eve and spent $250 on jewelry and clothing at Macy's and J. C. Penney for his mother, sister and other relatives.

"This is when I see the best deals," said Shider, who lives in Newark, N.J.

Ryan Eagle, 25, planned to hit South Park Mall in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday morning to shop for presents for his wife. He always shops on Christmas Eve, he said, to get good deals and to people-watch. Last year, he found $200 boots on sale for $50 at Macy's.

"I'm a last-minute person," he said. "I enjoy going out and watching everyone run around."

Dempsey: Hazing, Bullying 'Intolerable' in Military

Dempsey: Hazing, Bullying ?Intolerable? in Military

By Donna Miles and Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23, 2011 ? Emphasizing that bullying and hazing undermine everything the military stands for, the top U.S. military officer said every member of the armed forces has a personal responsibility to uphold its ?zero tolerance? standard and intervene to stop any occurrences.

"We are currently investigating several allegations of hazing within our ranks,? Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reported in a posting yesterday on his Facebook site and Twitter.

Dempsey posted his message after the Army brought charges this week against eight soldiers allegedly involved in the death of Army Pvt. Danny Chen. Chen, an infantryman deployed to southern Afghanistan with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, was found dead in a guard tower Oct. 3 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

?These appear to be isolated instances of misconduct, but I want to be very clear: hazing is simply intolerable,? Dempsey said in his message. ?It undermines our values, tarnishes our profession and erodes the trust that bonds us.

?This cruel form of misconduct requires an audience to achieve its intended effect of humiliation,? he noted. ?Every service member should be aware that participating in hazing or even observing it without reporting it are both wrong.? We are duty-bound to protect one another from hazing in any form.?

Navy Capt. John Kirby, deputy assistant secretary of defense for media operations, expressed condolences to Chen?s family during a Pentagon news conference earlier this week. ?This is a tragic, tragic incident,? he said.

Kirby declined to discuss the case, but underscored that bullying and hazing are never tolerated by service members.

?Any single case of hazing or inappropriate conduct to a fellow soldier, airman, Marine, sailor [or] Coast Guardsman is inappropriate and not acceptable,? he said. ?Zero is the right number.

?We treat each other with dignity and respect -- that?s what this uniform requires,? he added. ?When we don?t, there?s a justice system in place to deal with it. And that?s what we?re seeing here in the case of Private Chen.?

Kirby said hazing is not tolerated in the military and ?if it?s found and it?s proven -- it?s dealt with.?

?This is something inculcated in our culture from the moment you join the service,? he noted. ?From the moment you raise your right hand through all your basic training and your first tours of duty, these notions are bred into you in the military.

?We treat each other with respect and dignity or we go home -- that?s it,? Kirby said pointedly. ?The tolerance is absolutely zero and the system itself, because it works and works well, is in fact, a deterrent to future behavior.?

Kirby noted there are still ?miscreants? who want to defy military regulations, and reiterated ?when it?s found [and] proven, it?s dealt with.?

Kirby also cited ?training mechanisms? in place throughout all the services designed to help curb these types of incidents.

?Whether you?re an officer or enlisted, this is something bred into you when you come into the service,? he said.

?Unfortunately, you?re never going to be 100 percent perfect in this,? Kirby said. ?And there?s going to be those few who want to flaunt what the uniform stands for and what the regulations require ? when that happens they?re going to be dealt with.?

Hitachi Zosen Inova AG based in Switzerland Subsidiary Accepts Order to Construct Municipal Energy-from-Waste Plant in UK

Hitachi Zosen Corp. (Hitz), a Japanese company engaged in engineering and manufacturing environmental equipment, infrastructure and machines, announced on July 4, 2011 that its wholly owned subsidiary, Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI) based in Switzerland, had accepted an order from SITA STW Ltd. to construct a solid energy-from-waste plant with power generation capacity of 24,000 kilowatts in Teesside in the northeast of England. HZI is engaged in engineering, construction and maintenance of municipal solid energy-from-waste plants while SITA STW operates energy-from-waste plants in the UK.

The municipalities of Sunderland, Geteshed and South Tyneside in the UK entrusted SITA STW with the construction and long-term operation of a waste disposal and energy-from-waste plant under a private finance initiative scheme. HZI has accepted the order from SITA STW to provide engineering, procurement, and construction under a full turnkey agreement. Thanks to its renewable energy potential, solid waste incineration plants with power generation capability are increasingly attracting attention also in Japan for the disposal of urban waste. The new plant in the UK is estimated to generate enough power for 30,000 households while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 64,000 tons per year.

European countries including the UK have been relying on landfill for waste disposal. With the EU introducing stricter regulations on landfills and setting higher targets on renewable energy, demand for municipal solid energy-from-waste plants as facilities that generate energy from waste is expected to grow in the future.

Now, the malignant tumor is fixed to simply one place also it in some way starts its spread with other areas of the body.

Multiplication which begins within the lung area entails the malignant cancer cells being tiny and being contained in the lung area but starting to spread with other organs from the body while wrecking the tissue. Also called the main tumor, this tumor has a tendency to grow in the tissue inside the lung area where it?s situated. Only at that particular stage, regardless of how early it may be, the cancer of the lung survival rate isn?t as high compared to other kinds of cancer.
