Skitch for Android brings revamped UI, complete integration with Evernote

Skitch for Android brings revamped UI, complete integration with Evernote

Users haven't exactly been content with Evernote since it took over the Skitch reigns, but that's not stopping the Smart Notebook creator from pushing out constant updates to its Android offering. To go along with the handy tweaks from earlier this month, Evernote's now updated Skitch with a completely redesigned user interface, the addition of a couple of fresh tools (Pixelate and Highlighter), as well as, naturally, a much-improved integration with its own cloud-based service -- not to mention the ability to sync with Evernote, though said application would have to also be installed on your device. This new version of Skitch is available to download now via Google Play, and be sure to share your first impressions with us in the comments below.

Pacific Coast Commercial | Basic Training: These tips can help ...

October 31, 2012

?

Commercial real estate in San Diego has experienced a dynamic market shift during the past five years that has affected nearly every aspect of the industry.

?

As the slow economic recovery remains fragile, many commercial property owners and investors wonder if they can survive the still-shaky market. The answer is yes, they can.

?

The solutions for the future are rooted in back-to-basics fundamentals. The following survival tips equip commercial property owners and investors with strategies to successfully navigate the unpredictable market conditions that lie ahead.

?

?

?

?

?

Be Prepared

Preparation is the first and most important step to surviving a severe financial downturn. This step is especially critical in commercial real estate, since the industry is affected by so many variables that are outside of property owners? and investors? control.

?

A key preparation strategy is to monitor the capital markets and fluctuations in financing availability and industry trends. Keeping a watchful eye on emerging patterns can help owners and investors better understand real estate cycles and steer clear of danger.

?

In addition to analyzing industry trends, it is essential to keep track of the U.S. and global economies. With potential policy changes looming ahead after the upcoming presidential election, U.S. business owners should evaluate their current strategies and assess how commercial real estate in San Diego may be impacted by legislative modifications and the resulting global trends.

?

?

Know Your Clients

Clients can be a good barometer for what is coming next in the industry. An in-depth understanding of the financial markets and U.S. global economies can help companies better serve their clients as the industry shifts and changes. By understanding and monitoring lenders and industry niches, companies will be better prepared to change gears, secure different types of lending sources, and adapt to lenders who will provide the best financing programs for their clients? projects.

?

For example, after the savings and loan crisis in the 1990s, savings and loan entities disappeared, leaving a major shortage in commercial capital availability. At the time, George Smith Partners recognized that it needed to change its focus from savings and loans to the emerging Wall Street conduits and commercial mortgage-backed securities market. As one of the first companies in the industry to arrange CMBS financing, GSP built strong relationships with these new capital sources, many of which have become long-standing business relationships.

?

?

Communication Is Key

Technology evolves almost as quickly as the markets change. Commercial property owners, agents in San Diego commercial real estate leasing, and investors must harness new technologies and stay connected with clients, lenders, and other allied professionals. Ongoing communication and use of the latest technology is vital to retaining growth during a recession, as well as for staying at the forefront of the changing market.

?

For instance, in an effort to better market its services to clients and capital providers, GSP created a weekly faxed newsletter focused on insights into critical and relevant issues affecting the commercial real estate and financial industries. Over the years the subscriber base has grown; the newsletter is no longer faxed but now emailed to more than 100,000 recipients each week and has become a resourceful, invaluable tool for clients and industry constituents.

?

Company leaders must identify the communication tools that best suit their industry niche and client base. For some, the ongoing conversation and visibility of social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter can be far more beneficial to business development than more-traditional forms of communication. However, companies must strike a balance between traditional marketing and current communications techniques to remain successful.

?

?

Watch the Road Ahead

Predicting future market cycles is a difficult task, with unexpected sea changes in the capital markets as well as the macro and micro economies that affect San Diego commercial real estate leasing. Yet it is imperative to focus on the road ahead and try to look around corners to anticipate what is next.

?

In the short term, November?s U.S. presidential election is likely to have an impact on the economy, employment, regulation and taxes, and the fiscal markets, all of which impact commercial real estate. In addition, Europe?s financial crisis will continue to have domestic economic repercussions.

?

In the long term, the future of commercial real estate largely depends upon the economy and job creation over the next decade. There are some promising indicators that the economic train is on the right track: Capital markets have become more aggressive, and lenders and equity sources are actively seeking solid commercial real estate assets to finance. However, the economic recovery remains susceptible to many global and domestic factors that are rapidly changing.

?

As property owners and investors look ahead, it?s wise to take lessons learned in the recent past and use them to strategize for the future. With the right strategies and tools, property owners can prepare themselves for whatever the market may hold in the years ahead.?

Wood Ranch Celebrates 20 Years with New and Old Favorites

Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill

57 Fortune Dr., Suite 230

Irvine, CA 92618

It is nights like these that I really love being a food blogger. Most of the time being a food blogger is a lonely existence. Katie and I will go out to dinner, then I am left all alone to write about it. Sure there are emails that need to be answered, and people do comment on our posts, Facebook page, and Twitter, but these are all done with me alone sitting at the computer. When I started this blog I never thought we would be invited to restaurant events to try food. It never even occurred to me. One lesson I have learned is, the better the restaurant event, the more food bloggers that come out. This event at Wood Ranch had almost all of my favorite food bloggers in attendance, so I knew we were going to be in for a treat.

Wood Ranch is celebrating their 20th year. Started in Moorpark, this BBQ chain has expanded to 14 restaurants, with three in OC, (Anaheim Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, and this Irvine location). Unlike other BBQ restaurants, I do not think that you can classify Wood Ranch as a specific regional type of BBQ. They are kind of all over the map, which is not a bad thing, it actually is good. They can please a lot more palates that way. They have Carolina pulled pork, Texas style brisket, and even a Cuban sandwich, which we will get to later. Eating at Wood Ranch you can definitely choose your own BBQ destination.

In my last review of Wood Ranch, (Which you can read?here), I said that I thought Wood Ranch was the best BBQ chain restaurant around. Consistency is one reason for this, but the other factor for their success is ?their ever evolving menu. The test kitchen at Wood Ranch rolls out new menu items every few months to a select four restaurants, and if enough people like them they make it to the menu in all locations. One of our dining companions on this night was Alex Benes, director of culinary development. We really enjoyed hearing how all of these new items came to be, and how Wood Ranch has tweaked them just enough to make them their own. At this point of the evening we were all seated and had no idea how much food was headed our way.

Starting off my night right was this Raspberry Ranch Lemonade. I usually like my drinks very simple, but this alcoholic drink was very refreshing and not overly sweet. The drink combined Cruzan Raspberry rum, lemonade, and tiny bits of raspberry. I am not sure how they did it, but the small bits of raspberry would get sucked into the straw to provide an extra burst of fruit flavor. It took some self control just having one of these.

The first of our four appetizers to try were the Guacamole, Salsa, & Chips, and a signature appetizer at Wood Ranch, their Famous Shredded Onions. The salsa here was okay, but the guacamole was very fresh and went well with the tortilla chips. The onion strings always amaze me here. First the sheer size of one order. This is a serious mound of onions, which resembled a small haystack. You would expect it to be all greasy, but they are surprisingly crisp. The lack of grease does not mean these lack in taste either. I really liked dipping these in ranch dressing.

The next two appetizers really had more substance behind them. Just looking at these pictures really gets my mouth watering all over again. The Carolina Pulled Pork Sliders are always a favorite. These miniature version of the Pulled Pork Sandwich come with Carolina slaw, pickles, and Carolina BBQ Sauce on the side. The pork is always tender, the slaw gives you a little crunch, and the BBQ sauce brings it all together. An item I have never had at Wood Ranch is the Killer Fiery Wings, but I might not be able to go back without having these again. The name implies that these are going to be on the hot side, but they tasted more like candy. The sauce was sticky sweet, then had a little kick of spice at the end. The chicken itself was fried to a wonderful crispness. I am usually partial to really spicy, but these sweet wings really caught my attention.

Not a big meat eater? Wood Ranch has you covered. We tried two of the salad offerings here. The first salad was the Quinoa Salad. Quinoa is one of the hottest trends on menus these days, and Wood Ranch has it featured as a salad. This salad also contains hunks of avocado, tomato, black beans, almonds, and I might have spotted golden raisins in this. The produce was very fresh and was dressed with a champagne vinaigrette. There was some talk around the table that this might have been served too wet, but I liked it the way it was served, but I always like things a little more moist than the usual person. The Natalie's Salad is one of the most popular on the Wood Ranch menu. This one combined baby greens, candied walnuts, Gorgonzola crumbles, cucumbers, avocado and a balsamic dressing. I liked this salad, but it could have used more Gorgonzola and avocado to help make it pop with more flavor. Of course no trip to Wood Ranch would be complete without having their Garlic Dinner Rolls. These came out hot, and full of garlic flavor. They never disappoint.

An item you may not expect to find on a menu at a BBQ restaurant is a Cuban sandwich, but Wood Ranch's Bar-B-Cubano Sandwich was a big highlight for me. Anyone that knows me, knows that I love Cuban sandwiches. This is not a true Cuban because the bread is a little off and they use Dijon mustard instead of yellow mustard, but there is no denying that this was very good. The baguette was pressed enough to give the appearance of Cuban bread, and the pulled pork was of course a highlight here. Very tender, with a nice smokiness to it. The pickles and honey cured ham helped bring some sour and sweet to this balanced sandwich. I will ask for yellow mustard on future visits when ordering this sandwich. Solid sandwich, and a great addition to the Wood Ranch menu.

When I saw this Short Rib, I immediately thought of the closing credits of the Flintstones when they bring out that giant slab of meat and their car tips over. The photos of this slab of meat do not do it justice. There was so much meat on here, and the chipotle-cherry BBQ sauce added great flavor to this tender meat. A lot of people find the baby back ribs to be the best, but beef ribs get my vote for best rib. I would definitely make this part of my next Wood Ranch Combo.

By this time I was getting pretty full, so I did not focus so much on these two entrees. I did sample some of Katie's BBQ Half Chicken. I usually stay away from chicken in restaurants because they tend to over cook it, but this was very moist, and the you could tell they cooked this just right. The chicken went well with the original BBQ sauce. Not too much, just enough that you knew it was there, while still letting the chicken have top billing. The Texas-Style Smoked Brisket came out with three sauces; an au jus, a chipotle-cherry and a habanero-peach BBQ sauce. The meat went the best with the habanero-peach sauce in my opinion. This sauce was great, and I look forward to the day that you can buy it on-line, just like their regular BBQ sauce.

Side items are not to be over looked at Wood Ranch. The Steamed Broccoli fulfilled the vegetable quota and added a nice dash of green to my plate, so my Mom would be proud. One of the most popular side items at Wood Ranch is their Original Peanut Coleslaw. I am more partial to a mayo based coleslaw, but I can see why people really like this nutty version of coleslaw. The Mashed Potatoes were good, but the hit of the side items on this night was the Lauren's Favorite Mac and Cheese. This mac and cheese really got my table mates raving.

By this time of the night my pants felt like they were going to burst, but there is always room for dessert. Before you ask, no I did not eat all of these desserts. I only snapped pictures of most of them. Somehow the Warm Chocolate Cake got passed right by me before I could snag a bite. That dessert went rather quickly. I would not let the Oreo Cookie Crunch go by me the same way. This is a scoop of vanilla ice cream rolled in Oreo cookie crumbs, then served with a thick hot fudge. Wow, so simple, yet so good. I pretty much hoarded this one to myself. For the fruit lovers, there is the Mom's Deep Dish Cobbler in either peach or apple, and they also have two Cheesecakes. The original is adorned with fresh berries and a raspberry sauce and the special cheesecake this month is a Pumpkin spiced cheesecake with a caramel sauce. A great way to end our glutenous journey.

Twenty years and fourteen locations later, Wood Ranch is still going strong. I am sure they have many more years in their future. The food we had on this night was all pretty stellar. The highlights for me were the Beef Ribs, the Killer Fiery Wings, and the Bar-B-Cubano Sandwich. With choices like these, plus there other menu items, it will be hard for me to decide what to go with on our future visits here.

We would really like to thank everyone at Wood Ranch for the opportunity to try all of this great food. Michelle, the General Manager of this location, Chris who works in the corporate office at Wood Ranch, and Alex Benes for being such wonderful hosts. Thanks very much for your generosity and wonderful dinner conversation. Also worth highlighting was our server for the evening, Megan, who kept everything moving and never skipped a beat when making sure we were all doing okay. Thanks for everything Megan!. Also thanks to PR wunderkind, Jane Gillespie for thinking of inviting us to this great event. You were definitely missed at dinner.

One last group of thank yous goes out to all of the wonderful food blogger's that were in attendance. These guys are some of the best food writers our county has to offer, and the reason I love going to these events. Not only great writers, but fantastic people as well. We look forward to seeing you all again in the future.

American consumers overvalue US-produced apparel, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? In today's globalized economy, a large percentage of apparel products are multinational products as raw materials are produced, transported and assembled in different countries. However, consumers have little information about where and to what extent their apparel is produced domestically or overseas. Now, University of Missouri researchers have found that American consumers place a much higher value on apparel produced entirely in the U.S. with U.S. raw materials as opposed to products produced partially or entirely overseas. The value is so high, in fact, that MU experts worry it could be damaging to U.S. apparel manufacturing businesses and the overall economy.

In a study published in Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, Jung Ha-Brookshire, an assistant professor in the textile and apparel management department in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at MU, surveyed American consumers to determine the value they place on apparel produced in different countries. She showed participants a cotton shirt, told them it was made in China, and said it sold for $40 in retail stores. She then showed them the same piece of clothing and told them it was made in the U.S. with U.S. cotton. The study participants valued the U.S. cotton shirt at $57, which is more than 42 percent higher than the same shirt produced in China. Ha-Brookshire says this demonstrates a troubling trend for American consumers.

"Americans tend to severely overvalue apparel produced entirely in the U.S.," Ha-Brookshire said. "This is concerning because if Americans place higher values on these U.S. products, they perceive those products to be too expensive and are less likely to buy them, opting instead to buy similar Chinese-made products perceived to be more in their price range. To help U.S. apparel businesses create and maintain domestic jobs, American consumers need to have a realistic understanding of the value of apparel made in the U.S."

One positive finding in Ha-Brookshire's study was that American consumers do value apparel made with U.S.-grown cotton, even if the finished goods are manufactured overseas. When she showed the survey participants the same cotton shirt and told them it was made in China from U.S. cotton, participants valued the shirt at $47, or 17 percent higher than a shirt with only a "Made in China" label. Ha-Brookshire says this increased value is not large enough to be prohibitive for consumers.

"U.S. cotton growers can utilize these findings by better indicating what apparel is manufactured from their cotton," Ha-Brookshire said. "Currently, retailers are only required to indicate where the apparel was manufactured or sewn, but if consumers could see that apparel produced in China was made with U.S. cotton, they would probably be more likely to purchase it."

Ha-Brookshire also will present her research in November at the Textile Product Labeling Summit at the University of Missouri. The summit will consist of discussions among national policy makers, researchers, consumer advocates and industry leaders about important topics regarding current textile product labeling practices and regulations.

For reasons you can probably figure out on your own, Google has decided to only launch an unlocked GSM model of the Nexus 4, and offer it around the world. This means no LTE -- fear not, it has DC-HSPA+ 42mbps -- but it also keeps the price insanely low. At $299 (8GB) and $349 (16GB) without a contract, it's an extremely tempting proposition.

But as we noted earlier, what if you're on a CDMA carrier? Well there are actually some compelling options if you'd like to "test drive" a Nexus 4 -- and GSM -- before you commit to making it your primary device.

The Reference Frame: PBS Frontline: Climate of Doubt

PBS, a major U.S. Public TV station, has aired this 54-minute documentary, The Climate of Doubt:

See also additional PBS material on the program.

The program ? starting with some video sequences from the latest Heartland Climate Skeptics Conference in Chicago ? was largely criticized by Joe Bast of Heartland, Tom Harris of Canada, and some pre-program comments were mentioned by Chris Horner and The Heartland Institute. Gavin Schmidt posted the video on Real Climate, mostly to boast that he has appeared for a few seconds, too.

I think that a viewer will have no doubts that the creators of the program are hostile towards the skeptics ? due to the constant usage of offensive words such as "contrarians" and due to the hostile faces of the host (especially John Hockenberry), among a few other reasons. On the other hand, I think that this program has done a relatively fair and open job when it comes to the revelation of the information for the viewers, especially the information about the changes of the debate in recent years.

?

It seems to me that most of the viewers understood that the climate skeptics are damn reasonable, educated, and kind of nice people. There are many of them ? the number of "visible" climate skeptics among scientists isn't really lower than the number of "visible" climate alarmists.

While the program tried to claim otherwise, I guess that an intelligent viewer will understand that using a World War II analogy, the climate change controversy is like the war and the alarmists resemble the Axis powers while the skeptics are like the Allied forces. The Axis powers may be more tightly packed, they may demand a stricter discipline from themselves and from everyone else, and they may be spending more time by spreading the idea that their ultimate victory is inevitable. But even from their programs, an intelligent viewer must understand that the Allied forces are at least comparably powerful, they may be right, they seem to offer observations and arguments that are almost certainly right even now, they may already be winning battles, and they may soon celebrate the final victory in the war.

The idea that the Axis powers have some unbreakable superiority is a meme that just the most intellectually limited viewers may be eager to buy ? at least I hope so ? and I am kind of not afraid of it. I don't think it's too important what the people who can easily be brainwashed by a transparent propaganda think. What matters are the skeptical people who began to be somewhat interested in the issue, who understand other things, and who won't be fooled easily. And I am confident that this PBS program only helped those people to fall in love with the climate skeptics.

But the hostile tone towards climate skepticism notwithstanding, the program acknowledged that the bulk of America went pretty much skeptical in recent years. Surprisingly, it also acknowledged that Al Gore is a divisive asshole who helped the skeptics to strengthen even more. The viewers could hear some short "excerpts" from the skeptics who speak about the actual science ? although the scientific "technicality" were not the main focus of the documentary.

At some points, both alarmists and skeptics are saying things. And such segments often reminded me of the first Obama-Romney debate. For example, around 10:30, you may compare John Kerry and Myron Ebell. Kerry is subdued and seems to have developed bad conscience. He seems to admit a sequence of recent defeats and the non-existence of the actual consensus. Ebell speaks confidently, as a person whose words have already been pretty much established.

So I believe that this program, a mixture of an apparently prejudiced tone against the climate skeptics and some facts about the skeptics' victories, their decency, education, arguments, upward trend of their influence, and their rather large number as well as the subtle hints about the alarmists' dishonesty that may be seen in the program, despite the clear attempt to create a pro-alarmist program, will help America to become one additional little bit more skeptical again.

I would grade this program on the recent years in the climate debate: B. The biased language and the narrator's apparent bias penetrating the program is my only complaint.

The Challenge
Flower Girl Dress For Less has been a long time client of Zero 360 Marketing and they have held search engine ranking on all search engines for many years. The challenge was that their Pay Per Click campaigns on Google and Bing that were previously generating good results where no longer working. They were spending several thousand dollars a week on advertising but sales were flat.
The Solution
Flower Girl Dress For Less management was initially concerned about the time it would take to get a new campaign going would further impact their business. The Zero 360 Marketing's PPC team went right to work starting with:
??? Reviewing existing PPC campaigns and segmenting their ads and keywords that were working.
??? Searching out keywords and search terms that were not converting or were irrelevant and creating a comprehensive list of negative keywords.
??? Created multiple new PPC campaigns based according to best practices and proprietary methods.
??? Changing bidding methods from broad match which allows Google & Bing to decide when to show and charge for the ads, to phrase and exact match allowing us to determine when to show the ads and when not to.
??? Created a large number of new ads related to each search term. Ads are based on Flower Girl Dresses unique selling propositions, highlighting their benefits.
??? Landing pages were optimized for better conversion and sales.
Their old PPC campaign was paused and the new PPC campaign was launched on a Friday. The daily ad budget was increased by 10% to allow testing of some new international markets. By Monday Flower Girl Dress For Less received close to 30% more orders than normal. The numbers were astounding. They were rushing to process orders and ship within the promised time frame. They continued to break sales records on Tuesday, Wednesday and onto the following week.
The Results
The changes to PPC ads resulted in a 30% increase in sales over a 4 week period which has necessitated the hiring of more employees to handle the new business. Our PPC team continues to monitor and adjust the new campaigns. Some of the new international markets were adjusted to remove the under-performing keywords and ads, focusing the budget on high-yield keywords.

Halloween Barbecue Party Ideas | BBQ Barbecues News

shutterstock 50437861 199x300 Halloween Barbecue Party Ideas Kids love Halloween and by throwing a themed barbecue party you can join in the festivities too ? not to mention enjoy the spooky but tasty dishes and dips!

With a small amount of preparation, a Halloween barbecue party is easy to arrange. But this doesn?t mean it isn?t also a lot of fun to prepare for. Your kids can make their own invites, made into ghoulish shapes like ghosts, bats and pumpkins, and decide on the particular theme for the occasion such as monsters or characters from spooky films.

Once the invites are sent, it?s time to think how to decorate your garden for the occasion. In addition to buying plastic spiders and creepy creatures to place on the table and edges of certain dishes, you can carve faces into pumpkins with a candle placed inside and put these on the table or garden walls so guests can see them when outside with the barbecue.

You may also want to have a few games up your sleeves to entertain the kids after they?ve eaten. Good ideas for playing outdoors include the hanging apple tree. You need a handful of red apples and a couple of green apples ? hang 5 red and 1 green, using long string, from a branch and twist together. Then blindfold a child and see which apple is picked, with a prize up for grabs when a green one is selected.

Of course, food is the main element of any barbecue party ? and with lots of hungry little people to feed, here are some fun ideas to get you started.

Halloween pizza

Pizza cooks beautifully on the grill of a BBQ, and is also the perfect option for creative cooking. All you need are a load of pizza bases, pizza sauce, cheese and a variety of toppings, and then you can let the kids? imagination run wild. It?s easiest to use a pizza stone for the cooking part, that has a light dusting of flour to stop the dough from sticking to it, but you can also place the base straight onto the grill. Just make sure the barbecue is hot enough, so you can quickly cook both sides of the pizza base. Let these cool and then let the kids decorate their pizza with the toppings ? and a bit of help from the adults!

One idea is to make the pizza into a ghost or a pumpkin using the ingredients, for example adding olives for the eyes and pepperoni for the mouth. When the kids have decorated their pizza, you can cook it on the grill for 10 minutes, with the lid down.

Halloween sausages

These are simple to make and great fun to eat, transforming cooked cocktail sausages into gruesome fingers. When ready, make three cuts on one side of the sausages and cut a flat slice from the top of each and place a small triangle of cheese here ? then serve them sticking out from a bowl of ketchup, in the shape of a hand.

Halloween snacks

Food items like cheddar chunks, orange segments, spooky sweets, are always well received. Plus you can serve Halloween-themed dips with crisps, such as guacamole that you renamed Slime or a chunky salsa called Puke.

Halloween drinks

Try making a spooky punch using cranberry juice together with lemonade, served in a bowl and decorated with worm sweets.

The main thing is for the kids to have fun, so think creatively about what you?ll cook on the barbecue and have ready-prepared too. Plus, you could end the party with a game of Pass The Scary Parcel, which is just like the traditional version but with ghoulish prizes in each layer, and some marshmallows that can be toasted on the barbecue.

Campaign surrogates shore up support in final days

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has Springsteen. Republican Mitt Romney has his sons.

They, along with dozens of other celebrities and elected officials, are blitzing through battleground states in the White House race's final days. Their goal: give the presidential campaigns a daily presence in key states even when the men at the top of the ticket (and their running mates) pitch for votes somewhere else.

But these surrogates aren't just viewed as a bonus by the campaigns. They're deployed strategically to shore up crucial constituencies.

That's why Bruce Springsteen and Bill Clinton, two heroes of the middle class, campaigned together last week in Ohio, where white, working-class voters make up about half the electorate.

"This is not a complicated decision," Clinton said there. "If somebody saved my economy, I'd be for him."

Obama's campaign also sent Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a prominent Jewish politician, to heavily Jewish South Florida this week. And Sandra Fluke, who gained notoriety during the political debate over contraception earlier this year, has been appealing to women voters in Colorado and Nevada.

Romney's campaign has turned to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to rally Hispanic voters in his home state, as well as in Colorado and Nevada, battlegrounds with big Hispanic populations. Former GOP nominee John McCain, who twice won New Hampshire's Republican primary, has been campaigning there for Romney. And Rick Santorum has sought to burnish his GOP primary rival's conservative credentials in North Carolina.

Romney's five adult sons have been among his most effective surrogates. Their focus in countless campaign appearances across the country has been to show their father's softer side. Romney has used one son in particular, Craig, a fluent Spanish speaker, to help broaden his appeal to Hispanic audiences. Craig Romney addressed the Republican convention in Spanish and also has recorded numerous Spanish-language radio ads for his father.

"Between my five kids and my brothers, there are 18 grandkids now that my dad has," son Josh Romney told voters in Virginia this month. "So he thinks about those 18 grandkids. This is why he's in the race."

Obama has popular kids, too. But at ages 14 and 11, don't expect to see Malia and Sasha holding solo campaign events in the dwindling days of the race. In fact, the Obama girls have been largely absent from their father's re-election campaign, except for a brief appearance with their parents at the Democratic Party's national convention.

A look at other key surrogates for Obama and Romney:

THE WIVES:

Like her sons, Ann Romney has used her campaign appearances to vouch for her husband's character. She's become a regular on the talk-show circuit, appearing on "The View," ''The Tonight Show" and even co-hosting "Good Morning America." Mrs. Romney also has been dispatched to Pennsylvania, an Obama-leaning state where polls have tightened. Her trips there are aimed at giving the Republican ticket a foothold in the state without having to deploy the candidate himself.

First lady Michelle Obama is perhaps her husband's most popular surrogate, drawing thousands of people to her rallies and front-page coverage from local newspapers. Her travel schedule is also steeped in strategy. It's the first lady keeping up the Obama presence in North Carolina, a state seen as a longshot for the president and one he hasn't visited in more than six weeks. She's also been a frequent visitor to Wisconsin, allowing her husband to travel elsewhere while she motivates voters in a state where the campaign feels confident.

THE STARS:

Obama's celebrity connections go beyond Springsteen. Long a hit with the Hollywood crowd, the president also has the backing of actresses Rashida Jones and Ashley Judd and rock star Jon Bon Jovi, all of whom have held events throughout the Midwest. Actor Morgan Freeman also lent his celebrity cache to a recent television advertisement promoting Obama's economic record.

Romney has celebrity backers as well, including country singer John Rich, comedian Jeff Foxworthy and former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway. But they tend to appear alongside the Republican nominee at rallies, helping energize the crowd, rather than hold solo events.

THE CABINET:

One advantage of running as an incumbent is the Cabinet.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan's speeches on school reform and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis' interviews about falling unemployment aren't technically campaign events. But they're all about promoting the president's policies.

The campaign also has taken advantage of loopholes in federal election rules that allow Cabinet secretaries to campaign if they're appearing as private citizens, not in their official capacity.

That means Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, a former Colorado senator, frequently shows up at campaign events in his home state. U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who is black, joined a recent get-out-the-vote bus tour in North Carolina, where Obama needs big turnout from African-Americans. An email announcing Kirk's participation noted he was appearing "in his personal capacity" and urged reporters to refrain from using his official title.

Consultancy joins NZ's fastest growing businesses | Voxy.co.nz

Setting out as a new business venture in the teeth of a recession four years ago may have seemed a daunting venture. But it is one that?s paid off for specialist Business Intelligence (BI) provider Stellar Consulting which was tonight named by Deloitte as one of New Zealand?s 50 fastest growing companies.

New Zealand?s leading independent provider of end-to-end BI consultancy services, Stellar has grown rapidly from a team of five to over 25, with revenue growth of 247% percent over the past three years.

Managing Director Grant Broadbent said the founders of the company had a vision for a new approach to applying BI to help clients boost revenue and improve decision-making and competitiveness which has proven hugely successful.

Working with a blue chip list of leading New Zealand companies and organisations, he said Stellar had made a priority of engaging a top team of specialist consultants in BI. Stellar is also unique in focussing entirely on end-to-end BI consultancy and in being independent of major vendors.

"BI can be an incredibly powerful way of opening up new value if it is applied correctly. Our aim has been to show the gains that can be made from better managing all the information needed in making business decisions today, and to do this in a way that left our clients free to choose the technology that best suited them," he said.

The Deloitte Fast 50 index ranks businesses by their revenue growth setting a benchmark for high-growth companies.

"Our clients have seen firsthand the tangible benefits of investing in BI," Mr Broadbent said.

"We are proud of the growth we have achieved, and pleased that the work of our team, and the value that BI can bring, has been recognised."

Stellar has also been nominated in the upcoming Westpac Auckland Central Business Awards in the Excellence in Service Delivery and Best Emerging Business categories.

Thread: Walnut doors with stained glass inserts - Family Woodworking

Week ending October 21st: (post two of two)

The overall quality of the walnut is quite good, but there are a few knot holes. I deal with these using a mixture of walnut planer shaving, walnut sawdust, and epoxy (QuickCure 5) in steps as shown in the photos below:

The mixture dries very hard and can be readily sanded. Once a finishing coat is applied (later), the former hole blends in reasonably well.

The walnut is screwed as well as glued, then the screw holes are plugged with walnut dowels. These are ?manufactured? from cut offs:

I just noticed when looking at this photo now that I chipped then paint off a couple of tiles when taking off the old molding. Oh well, I still have most of a box of tiles left over from when I applied them about 25 years ago. I expect that I will need to purchase new grout though.

Facebook Q3: Ad Revenue Accelerates - Business Insider

Facebook made $1.09 billion in ad revenue in Q3 2012. Its total revenue was $1.262 billion. That's about 10 percent in sequential growth.

Note that in the prior Q3 period, sequential growth was lower than that. Ad revenue thus appears to be accelerating.

Executions increasingly viewed as torture: U.N. investigator

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Countries around the world are increasingly viewing capital punishment as a form of torture because it inflicts severe mental and physical pain on those sentenced to death, a U.N. torture investigator said on Tuesday.

Traditionally, countries have considered the legality of capital punishment with respect to the right to life guaranteed under international law, U.N. special rapporteur on torture Juan Mendez told the U.N. General Assembly's human rights committee.

"My analysis of regional and national jurisprudence identifies a momentum towards redefining the legality of capital punishment," Mendez said.

"States need to re-examine their procedures under international law because the ability of states to impose and carry out the death penalty is diminishing as these practices are increasingly viewed to constitute torture," he said.

He said that there was no such thing as a pain-free form of execution, which makes it difficult to reject the idea that it is a form of torture.

"Methods of execution cannot be discounted as being completely painless," he told reporters after addressing the General Assembly's Third Committee.

In his report to the 193-nation General Assembly, Mendez said that several U.N. expert panels have urged the United States to review its execution methods, including lethal injection, to prevent extreme pain and suffering.

"Following a number of executions in the United States, it has recently become apparent that the (lethal injection) regimen, as currently administered, does not work as efficiently as intended," Mendez's report said.

"Some prisoners take many minutes to die and others become very distressed," he said. "New studies conclude that even if lethal injection is administered without technical error, those executed may experience suffocation, and therefore the conventional view of lethal injection as a peaceful and painless death is questionable."

Capital punishment is a controversial and divisive issue in the United States. Most U.S. states, as well as the federal government and U.S. military, allow executions, though some states have raised concerns similar to Mendez's.

Last month a Montana judge struck down that state's lethal injection procedure as a violation of the Montana constitution because it lacked necessary safeguards against cruel and unusual punishment, effectively suspending executions.

'CUMBERSOME AND EXPENSIVE'

Mendez criticized Iran in his report to the General Assembly for executing minors. He also condemned Tehran for hanging 10 people for drug smuggling, describing as unacceptable "the death penalty for crimes that are not even among the worst offenses.

In his report he said, "The evolving practice of States shows a clear trend towards abolition of the death penalty." However, he did not name the countries that have done so.

He urged all countries to consider abolishing capital punishment because it is "cumbersome and expensive and you're never sure you're doing it in the right way." He added that its deterrent value was questionable.

His report did not mention China, which executes more people than any other country and has been criticized by human rights groups for its execution methods. Mendez said that his report was meant to be general, though it does contain several specific examples, including the United States and Iran.

Mendez spoke about what he called the "death row phenomenon," circumstances that cause severe mental anguish and physical suffering among prisoners serving death sentences.

Such suffering, he said, includes uncertainty and anxiety caused by the imminent threat of execution, extended solitary confinement, poor prison conditions and a lack of recreational or educational possibilities.

A diplomat from Singapore, one of the countries that allows the death penalty, rejected as "deeply flawed" Mendez's suggestion that considering capital punishment a form of torture was emerging as a new widely accepted international legal norm.

"There is no evidence that the decisions Mr. Mendez has referred to have been accepted by all states as having the status of binding rules of international law," Mark Neo, a senior diplomat at Singapore's U.N. mission, said in the written text of his statement.

"Singapore certainly has not accepted them as such," he said.

Egypt also rejected Mendez's views. The U.S. mission declined to provide its statement, though Mendez said the U.S. delegation also rejected the idea that there was an emerging legal view that executions should be considered torture.

Mandel Looks for Final Surge to Land Ohio Senate for GOP

Sen. Sherrod Brown raised more than $5.4 million in the third quarter, his campaign announced Monday, as the Ohio Democrat faces a determined challenge from tea party favorite Josh Mandel.

Money matters a lot in this race, which both parties see as a key battleground in the war for control of the Senate. Ohio?s 20 electoral votes ended up going to Barack Obama in 2008, but it a crucial swing state this election season.

Mandel, 35, has been called a ?boy wonder of Republican politics? by RealClearPolitics. He reported raising $4.5 million in the third quarter. He also has received generous support from outside groups anxious to unseat Brown, whom he has labeled ?the most liberal senator in America.?

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, for example, reported last week that it had spent $2.3 million on TV and radio ads to boost Mandel, making Brown one of the business lobby?s major targets.

But Brown, 59, isn?t doing badly in the money-raising race. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan tracking group, Brown has raised $20.4 million this election cycle, compared to $14.4 million for Mandel.

A Marine Corps veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq, Mandel is in his second term as Ohio?s treasurer. He previously served two terms in the state Legislature.

He likes to laugh at his own boyish appearance. In January he told Newsmax that his ambition was to? start shaving by the time he reached his next birthday. But behind the jokes is a serious politician.

One campaign slogan he has used is "It ain't about the age, it's about the miles," saying the time he spent both in the military and in state politics more than match up to his opponent's decades of experience.

Brown was first elected to the Senate in 2006, where he has a liberal, pro-labor voting record, and is now seeking a second term. He had previously served two terms as Ohio?s secretary of state and was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1974. He also taught democracy and government in Poland.

Brown has received the endorsement of four major Ohio newspapers, including the Plain Dealer of Cleveland and the Akron Beacon Journal.

Polls have consistently showed Brown leading, but Mandel still has hopes for a late surge of support.

So far Brown seems to be doing better in Ohio than Obama, and strong support for Mitt Romney could work to Mandel?s advantage.

"If Romney could keep it close, Mandel's going to be in the Senate," Scott Reed, a top political strategist for the Chamber of Commerce, told The Associated Press.

?Spaced Out: 43% of Gen X Can't Identify Home Galaxy

Identifying your home or street from a Google Earth image may be tough enough, but what about your cosmic address? Turns out, fewer than 50 percent of adults ages 37 to 40 know that humans live in the spiral Milky Way galaxy.

That's according to a new report of more than 4,000 American adults who make up the core of Generation X.

"Knowing your cosmic address is not a necessary job skill, but it is an important part of human knowledge about our universe and ? to some extent ? about ourselves," report author Jon D. Miller said in a statement.

Miller is the director of the Longitudinal Study of American Youth at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. Beginning in 1986, with funding from the National Science Foundation, scientists have collected data about the lives and knowledge of Generation X.

In the latest installment of the study, Miller showed participants a Hubble Space Telescope image of a spiral galaxy and asked them to identify the picture. The participants were asked to identify the image first in an open-ended question and then in a multiple-choice setup. [Infographic: Our Milky Way Galaxy]

Just 43 percent of participants gave an answer saying the image represented a galaxy like our own. And men had a leg up, with 53 percent of males and 32 percent of females nailing their cosmic location to some degree. Those with less than a high-school education fared the worst, with just 21 percent knowing our cosmic address, compared with 63 percent of those with doctorates or professional degrees who said the same.

"One of the factors that contributes to this educational difference is exposure to college-level science courses," Miller said. "The United States is unique in its requirement that all college students complete one year of college science courses as part of a general education requirement."

Though four out of five participants indicated they had seen this type of space-telescope image before, often online, 60 percent said this was the first time they took a careful look at such an image.

Those who correctly identified the sparkly swirl as a spiral galaxy like the one we live in were more likely than the "cosmically lost" participants to agree with the statements:

--"When I see images like this, I am reminded of the vastness of the universe" (70 percent versus 53 percent);

--"Images like this show how small and fragile planet Earth is in the context of the universe" (58 percent versus 44 percent);

--"Seeing images like this make me want to learn more about the nature of the universe" (27 percent versus 19 percent);

--"It is very likely that there is intelligent life at many places in the universe" (39 percent versus 26 percent).

However, those in the know about the Milky Way were slightly less likely than the other participants to agree that "the size and complexity of the universe proves the greatness of God's creation" (45 percent versus 51 percent, respectively).

"Unlike our distant ancestors who thought the Earth was the center of the universe, we know that we live on a small planet in a heliosphere surrounding a moderate-sized star that is part of a spiral galaxy," Miller said. "There may be important advantages in the short-term ? the next million years or so ? to knowing where we are and something about our cosmic neighborhood."

With the rise of the Internet, Miller noted, such images and cosmic information are more accessible than ever. Even so, he said, "some of the science information on the Internet is incorrect or misleading." When asked, participants indicated the most trusted Internet resources for universe-related information included a NASA website, a program or exhibit at a planetarium or museum, a PBS Nova science show, a Discovery Channel science show and a lecture by an astronomy professor. The least trusted sources: a lecture by a leader of a church or religious group.
