Janet Johnson and Tindal Snider were recognized as Women of Achievement at an awards luncheon in Roanoke this week. They were among 47 distinguished women in the Roanoke, Lynchburg and New River Valley region nominated for this year?s prestigious award. This is the tenth year that Women of Achievement have been recognized. The program was started by the Roanoke YWCA in 2003 and is being continued by DePaul Community Resources.
The Women of Achievement awards recognize outstanding women of the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and the Lynchburg area who have made significant contributions to the community through career, leadership and volunteer activities. This year?s awards were presented at a special luncheon attended by 270 community leaders and held at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center. Nancy Howell Agee, president and CEO of Carilion Clinic gave the keynote address. Jean Jadhon of News 7 WDBJ TV was the MC and presenter of awards.
Janet Johnson was the recipient of the Women of Achievement Award for Arts. She is involved in many community arts activities and serves on the Board of the Arts, the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony and the Board of Directors for the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. In 2006, she and he her husband Jim received the Baldwin Town and Gown Award from the Community Foundation of the New River Valley for their volunteer service for the ?Hokie Bird Statues? project. Johnson is an active Rotarian, having served as district governor in 2011-2012. She is a retired Professor and Dean Emerita from the College of Human Sciences and Education at Virginia Tech.
Tindal Snider received the Women of Achievement Award for Religion. As Age Level Ministries Coordinator at Blacksburg United Methodist Church she has many opportunities to be involved in both her church and the Blacksburg community. Under her quiet and compassionate leadership the FUN 143 program which she oversees in Blacksburg Estates Mobile Home Park has expanded to become a program that offers many levels of support to both children and their families. Activities now include summer enrichment programs, music and choir lessons, sporting events and financial assistance for families living there.
The Women of Achievement Awards program is sponsored annually by DePaul Community Resources. DePaul) celebrated its 35th year of operation in March, 2012. The non-profit organization initially specialized in providing treatment foster care for children with special needs. In recent years the agency has expanded its services to include adoption, family care homes, group homes, day support services and respite services throughout southwestern Virginia.
