Oscar nod for West Memphis 3 film angers parents (AP)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? The parents of two of three Arkansas boys who were brutally murdered nearly two decades ago said they're disappointed that a documentary about the killings and the three men convicted, known as the West Memphis Three, was nominated Tuesday for an Academy Award.

Todd and Diana Moore had asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to exclude "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" from consideration, saying it glorifies Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. The three spent 18 years in prison, long claiming their innocence and attracting attention from celebrities, before reaching a deal with prosecutors to be set free last year.

The film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, is the third in a series of HBO documentaries about the case. The 8-year-old Cub Scouts ? Michael Moore, Stevie Branch and Christopher Byers ? were found dead in 1993 in West Memphis, a town along the Mississippi River. Two drowned in a drainage ditch, the other bled to death; all were found naked and tied up.

The Moores, along with Stevie Branch's father and stepfather, sent a letter to the Academy and reporters on Tuesday expressing their "sadness, disappointment, and outrage" about the Oscar nod.

"This film should be exposed as a fraud, not rewarded with an Academy Award nomination," they wrote.

Berlinger, who was at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, said in an email that he was sympathetic to the victims' families.

"We believe that the pursuit of the truth has been the best way to honor the memories of the victims of this unimaginable crime and our hearts go out to those who are criticizing us," he said.

The Academy didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The film was among five documentary features nominated for an Oscar.

The first film aired in 1996 and immediately raised doubts about the case. Over the years, celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines joined the effort to free Echols, who was sentenced to death, and Baldwin and Misskelley, who received life prison sentences.

The three men were freed in August after pleading guilty to lesser charges in exchange for sentences of the 18 years they'd already served. An unusual legal maneuver allowed the men to maintain their claims of innocence.

Since then, the men have been relearning to live outside prison walls and new films are chronicling the case. "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" premiered last year, and another film, "West of Memphis," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this month.

The letter from the Moores comes shortly after Pam Hobbs, Stevie Branch's mother, asked the state to reopen the case after she saw new evidence in "West of Memphis." She believes Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley did not murder her son.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington, who handled the case in August, didn't respond to a phone message left Tuesday. He has said he believes the real killers were convicted but promised to look at new defense evidence.

Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley were convicted after Misskelley unexpectedly confessed and implicated the other two, describing sodomy and other violence. Misskelley, then 17, later recanted, and defense lawyers said he got several parts of the story wrong. An autopsy found there was no definite evidence of sexual assault, and Misskelley said the older boys abducted the Cub Scouts in the morning, when they had actually been in school all day.

NEC NP-V260X

The back of the NEC NP-V260X ($550 street) is bristling with ports and jacks that make it a good fit for a classroom or conference room?s data projection needs. Though it?s light enough to be easily portable, it?s best suited for use within a school or company rather than being lugged by a road warrior. In our testing, its image quality was decidedly better for data than for video. The DLP-based NP-V260X has an XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution, a 4:3 aspect ratio befitting data presentations. Its brightness is rated at 2,600 lumens.

The NP-V260X, a white projector with rounded corners, measures 3.7 by 12.2 by 9.7 inches (HWD) and weighs a reasonably light 5.5 pounds. Two factors make it less portable than it could be. Unlike most projectors in its weight class, it does not come with a carrying case. It also lacks a port for a USB thumb drive, meaning that it can?t run a standalone presentation and you?ll have to have a computer or other image source on hand for it to connect to (or at least access to a network).

As for connectivity, it does have an HDMI-in port, something we?re seeing in XGA as well as higher-resolution projectors. It also has S-Video, and the three RCA jacks for composite video and audio. There are 2 VGA-in ports for connecting to computers (each with its own audio-in jack) and one VGA-out for a monitor (with an audio-out jack). An Ethernet port for LAN connectivity and an RS232 port for PC control round out the picture.

Data and Video Image Testing

Although at 2,600 lumens of rated brightness, the NP-V260X is slightly dimmer than the similar the 3,000-lumen NEC NP-V300X ($779 direct, 3.5 stars), it?s still bright enough so the image, sized to about 65 inches in a diagonal to fill our test screen, stood up well even under considerable ambient light.

In my data image testing using the DisplayMate suite, the NP-V260X showed reasonably good image quality, and should be more than adequate for use in typical business and educational presentations. There was some color fringing at the borders between very bright and very dark areas, and some minor tinting of white areas. White-on-black type was reasonably sharp except at our smallest test size, which is typical of an XGA projector.

All single-chip DLP projectors are potentially subject to the rainbow effect, in which bright areas seem to break up into little red-green-blue rainbows. People vary in their sensitivity to it. I noticed it in the data test images that tend to bring it out, but wasn?t unduly distracted by it.

Video testing was a different matter. Rainbows were readily apparent in high-contrast test scenes, such as the apocalyptic battle scene at the beginning of Terminator 2. The effect was more pronounced than is usual with DLP projector, and was distracting to me?I seem to be about average in my sensitivity to the effect.? The NP-V260X is okay for short video clips as part of a presentation, but I?d hesitate to use it for longer clips, let alone movies.

Other Issues

The projector?s built-in audio system, which employs a single 7-watt speaker, is loud enough to fill a small conference room, with about average sound quality. The NP-V260X is 3D ready, using DLP Link, though you need active shutter glasses (which cost at least $50 a pair) to view content in 3D.

The NEC NP-V260X provides many more connection choices than most of the less expensive XGA business projectors we?ve looked at; the similarly priced Epson EX5210 Multimedia Projector ($549 direct, 3.5 stars) does add a port for a USB thumb drive as well as a USB port for connecting to a PC. The NEC NP-V300X provides similar features to the NP-V260X but at a higher brightness and price. If you need much higher brightness and better data image quality (and no rainbow effect) in an XGA-resolution projector, consider the Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 1880 MultiMedia Projector ($1,399 direct, 4 stars). But apart from sticker shock, you?ll also pay a price in reduced portability, as it weighs 7.2 pounds?and like the NP-V260X, it lacks a carrying case. The NEC NP64 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars) is far more portable (3.9 pounds), bright at 3,000 lumens, and does come with a case.

Ahead of any possible Ultrabook announcements, Sony's looking to give its existing VAIO catalogue a (relatively underwhelming) shot in the arm with a bundle of hardware retweaks. The Z series looks to gain the most out of the Spring refresh, with a new off-white Carbon Fiber Silver color option set to be offered up alongside an optional LTE modem. The series also gets a processor step-up, with new Intel Core i5 and i7 options rounded off with the choice of SSD storage. Including the connectable drive, prices for the series refresh will start from $1,950. Meanwhile, both the S (13-inch, $800, 15-inch, $980)and E series will get a similar bump to Core i7 processors, with both the S and aforementioned Z series able to lock into an extended sheet battery accessory. If minor processor improvements, more battery options and LTE connectivity warrant forking over your cash, you can expect the revitalized units to arrive early next month.

Woman ordered to give up hard drive password

In the future, your hard drive may not be your hard drive: A federal judge has ruled that a Colorado woman, charged in a mortgage scam case, must turn over the password needed to decrypt her hard drive so that police can view the files on it.

Ramona Fricosu was given until Feb. 21 to comply with the order by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Blackburn. The judge said Fricosu's defense ? the Fifth Amendment's right against self-incrimination ? did not apply in the case, in which she is charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

"I find and conclude that the Fifth Amendment is not implicated by requiring production of the unencrypted contents of the Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop computer," the judge said in his ruling Tuesday, as reported by CNET.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital civil liberties organization that filed an amicus brief on Fricosu's behalf, had argued that Fricosu should not be compelled to give up her password because it would violate her Fifth Amendment right, and there was no immunity "offered for loss of this protection."

In addition, the EFF said, the government had not specified what it was looking for on the Fricosu's laptop, making it seem like an "evidence-fishing trip."

But the U.S. Attorney's Office said in court documents that if Fricosuwasn't ordered to unlock her computer, it would result in a "concession to her and potential criminals (be it in child exploitation, national security, terrorism, financial crimes or drug trafficking cases) that encrypting all inculpatory digital evidence will serve to defeat the efforts of law enforcement officers to obtain such evidence through judicially authorized search warrants, and thus make their prosecution impossible.?

As CNET's Declan McCullagh wrote, "The question of whether a criminal defendant can be legally compelled to cough up his encryption passphrase remains an unsettled one, with law review articles for at least the last 15 years arguing the merits of either approach."

Embarrassing Financial Revelations from Past Candidates (ContributorNetwork)

After increasing pressure in recent days from his fellow candidates and the media, and in the wake of a stunning, last-minute collapse in the South Carolina primary last Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced that he would release his tax return information for 2010 and 2011 on Tuesday.

Tax issues can sometimes provide headaches for candidates running for high office. Let's take a look back at some tax-related issues from past candidates:

Geraldine Ferraro (vice presidential candidate, election of 1984) -- Ferraro, a relatively inexperienced representative from New York, was chosen as the first woman on a major-party presidential ticket by Democrat Walter Mondale right before the convention in the summer of 1984. The media swarmed around the ground-breaking candidate and, soon, the New York Times launched an investigation into the financial situation of both Ferraro and her husband, a real estate investor. Eventually Ferraro released several years of tax returns that led to a series of embarrassing revelations of underpaid taxes and illegal campaign loans among other things.

Dick Cheney (vice president candidate, election of 2000) -- By his own admission during his campaign on the ticket with George W. Bush in the 2000 election, Cheney made more than $20 million during the 1990s. His charitable contributions, on the other hand, amounted to only about one percent of his total income during that period. The media zeroed in on this fact and went on the attack. Cheney weathered the storm well, however, and made up for his previous lack generosity. In 2005, for example, Cheney and his wife Lynne donated over $6.8 million on total earnings of $8.8 million.

Sarah Palin (vice presidential candidate, election of 2008) -- The little-known governor from Alaska was chosen by Republican John McCain as his running-mate for the 2008 campaign. But when Palin released her tax information from 2006 and 2007 it was revealed that she had not reported income from per diem payments made to her by the State of Alaska while she was staying in her own home as governor. The state eventually ruled that she had to pay taxes on that income.

Joe Biden (vice presidential candidate, election of 2008) -- Soon after Biden was chosen to be Barack Obama's running-mate during the 2008 campaign he released several years of tax returns. As a career politician Biden is not ultra-rich, but embarrassment ensued when his 1999 return revealed that he and his wife Jill had given a paltry $120 in charitable donations on an income of over $210,000.

New body found on wrecked Italian ship (Reuters)

GIGLIO, Italy (Reuters) ? Salvage crews expect to begin pumping thousands of tonnes of fuel from the wrecked Costa Concordia by Saturday, officials said, as divers found a 16th body on the giant Italian cruise liner, which capsized off the Tuscan coast over a week ago.

Preparations began on Tuesday for the complex task of extracting more than 2,300 tonnes of diesel oil from the giant liner's 17 fuel tanks with divers beginning the work of installing external fuel tanks to hold the oil pumped out.

As the salvage preparations began on Tuesday, divers found the body of an elderly woman wearing a life jacket, bringing the total number of bodies recovered so far to 16.

At least 16 more people are missing on the 290-metre long vessel, which lies half-submerged on its side just outside the tiny island port of Giglio. Nine victims have been identified and the identities of seven others are so far unknown.

Dutch salvage company SMIT brought a barge carrying defueling equipment alongside the giant hulk as divers worked on installing external tanks that will be used to hold more than 2,300 tonnes of diesel that must be pumped out of the Concordia.

Navy explosive experts also blasted a hole into the submerged third deck of the ship to allow divers to continue the search of the vessel after the bodies of two so-far unidentified women were found on Tuesday.

"While this operation is underway, rescue efforts are continuing simultaneously," fire services spokesman Claudio Chiavacci said.

Authorities have been increasingly concerned at the threat of an oil spill in the marine reserve where the accident occurred but work on removing diesel and lubricating oil has been delayed by the search for survivors and bodies.

Preparations to begin pumping the oil are expected to take several days and the actual work of removing the fuel from the giant liner's 17 fuel tanks will take another 28 days.

The head of Italy's Civil Protection Authority, Franco Gabrielli, said pumping would probably not begin before Saturday but added: "Anything before that would obviously be welcome."

Officials dismissed reports that oil had started to leak out of the ship, saying that monitoring equipment had shown no significant pollution spreading from the wreck. A thin film of oil had spread in the water but posed no serious threat.

Gabrielli said he had asked the ship's owners Costa Cruises to produce a plan to clean up the pollution from general debris around the vessel by Wednesday.

INVESTIGATION EXTENDED

As the work on Giglio continued into a second week, magistrates investigating the accident are expected to extend their inquiries, with attention increasingly focused on Costa Concordia's operators.

The company's chief executive Pier Luigi Foschi is due to be questioned by the public works committee of the Senate on Wednesday and Italian newspapers speculated that company officials would be questioned by magistrates soon.

The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino has been blamed for the accident on January 13 and placed under house arrest, accused of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4,200 passengers and crew was complete.

But his lawyer said on Monday that the investigation would be extended to other officials of Costa, a unit of the world's largest cruise operator Carnival Corp.

Costa said on Tuesday it had not been notified that it was under investigation but would cooperate fully with investigators and had full confidence in magistrates.

There was some confusion on Tuesday about the status of toxicological tests on Schettino.

His lawyer said on Monday that the tests had proved negative but Carlo Rienzi, the head of consumer protection association Codacons, which has declared itself a civil party in the case, said drugs tests would be carried out in Rome on Thursday. He said no test for alcohol was planned.

In interviews, the company has placed the blame for the accident squarely on the shoulders of the 51 year-old Schettino, who told investigators he brought the ship close into shore to perform a maneuver known as a "salute" to the island.

How far Costa knew about or even encouraged such maneuvers has been disputed but there are also questions about when Schettino informed the company of what had happened after the ship was holed by a rock.

Schettino's lawyer has said his client is ready to assume his share of responsibility for the accident but he has said he was in constant touch with Costa's command centre during the including the evacuation of the ship.
