The Go Green Award 2012 was supported by the Green Council (a nonprofit environmental association in Hong Kong), Green Sense (a charitableOrganization that aims to promote environmental compliance), Green Power (an environmentalist and ecologist nongovernmental organization) and the National Geographic Channel.
The award serves as a benchmark to recognize corporations and brands that are making a positive contribution and commitment to the environment.
Costa Cruises received the award based on its involvement in several projects dedicated to protecting the environment. Since September 2011 the company is the "Sustainable Cruise" Project Manager for an initiative on Costa Pacifica cofunded by the European Commission through the LIFE + Program that is testing for the first time in the maritime field the feasibility of turning organic waste into reusable materials such as compost or fuel. Moreover, Costa ships? ongoing environmental practices include waste-management policies, recycling of aluminum, glass and other wastes; usage of desalination plants for water production, and energy and fuel-saving measures that have resulted in decreased pollutant emissions.
