Romney gets Bush backing, but no sign of George W.

HOUSTON (AP) ? George W. Bush is as hard to find in his father's office, as he is in the 2012 presidential contest.

The 43rd president appears in a gold-framed picture tucked into a far corner of the room, partially hidden by a Texas flag and a cabinet door. The placement ? whether intentional or not ? is a reminder of the Republican presidential campaign and the lengths to which Romney and his rivals have tried to marginalize the two-term president.

The younger Bush was an afterthought Thursday as President George H.W. Bush met with current GOP front-runner Mitt Romney until a reporter raised the issue.

"I haven't met with President George W. Bush. We speak from time to time," Romney said when asked if he had sought the younger Bush's endorsement.

Reporters were forced to leave the room before they could ask more about Romney's connection to the Republican president who left office just three years ago with the nation on the brink of financial ruin. George W. Bush has been ignored for months in the Republican presidential campaign. But his absence has been more pronounced over the last seven days as Romney trumpeted the endorsements of the former president's father and younger brother, former Florida. Gov. Jeb Bush, while spending two days courting donors across Texas.

George W. Bush, who lives in Dallas, did not attend any of Romney's half dozen Texas fundraisers this week. And he's not expected to follow his family's migration to Romney's camp any time soon.

While largely unspoken, both sides acknowledge that Republicans would be best served by not reminding voters of the Bush legacy of gaping budget deficits, two wars and record low approval ratings. His eight-year presidency has merited no more than a fleeting reference from Romney and his rivals in debates, campaign stops and interviews.

"For now we're just staying out of it," George W. Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said Thursday, declining to comment on a possible endorsement. Ford said Bush was focused on promoting and developing a presidential library bearing his name at Southern Methodist University.

"That's really where he's spending his time," Ford said.

But George W. Bush's virtual invisibility from the presidential contest seemed to surprise even his 87-year-old father Thursday, as a handful of reporters visited the senior Bush's private office in Houston to watch him endorse Romney.

"Has he endorsed you?" George H.W. Bush quietly asked Romney as reporters were beginning to the leave the room.

"Uh, no, no," Romney responded, before Barbara Bush quickly ended the conversation: "We'll talk about that," the former first lady said.

The 43rd president has been noticeably absent from national politics since leaving office in 2009 with a Gallup approval rating of just 34 percent. His predecessor, Democrat Bill Clinton, had a 66 percent approval rating in early 2001 when he stepped down after two terms marred by a sex scandal and impeachment.

A plurality of Americans continue to blame Bush for the nation's economic struggles: 43 percent of voters said he deserved a lot or almost all of the blame, compared with 36 percent who point to Republicans in Congress, 33 percent who think Democrats in Congress are responsible and 30 percent who credit President Barack Obama, according to a December AP-GfK poll.

In a presidential contest dominated by concerns over the economy, government spending and federal debt, the Republican candidates have been loath to acknowledge the extent to which the George W. Bush administration's policies contributed to those problems.

There is no question that Obama's policies, including the federal stimulus program and the auto industry bailout, have swollen the deficit and deepened the debt. And three years into his presidency, Obama often falls back on complaints about the bad situation he inherited when defending his own economic performance.

But while Obama may be overly eager to blame the Bush years for the nation's problems, GOP presidential contenders seem just as eager to pretend those years never happened.

"George W. Bush is still too fresh in the minds of voters," said Republican operative Michael Dennehy, a top staffer for Sen. John McCain's presidential bid four years ago. "The Democrats' strategy is to try to pin the bad economy on him. ... It's smarter to just avoid being directly drawn into that line of attack right now."

Taking office in 2001 with a balanced federal budget and a surplus in the Treasury, Bush quickly pushed through sweeping tax cuts without nipping expenditures a corresponding amount. The Bush tax cuts were set to expire after 10 years, but Obama allowed them to remain in place temporarily in exchange for an extension of unemployment benefits and a payroll tax cut.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks never were budgeted and have cost taxpayers more than $1.4 trillion so far. Obama ordered the last troops out of Iraq in December, but the Afghanistan conflict is set to continue through 2014.

Bush also signed legislation in 2003 enacting a prescription drug benefit as part of Medicare, the government health care plan for seniors, a huge entitlement program projected to cost as much as $1.2 trillion over 10 years.

The Troubled Asset Relief Program, the bank bailout program widely loathed by many conservatives, was another Bush-era package. Congress authorized nearly $700 billion for the program at the recommendation of Bush's treasury secretary, former Goldman Sachs executive Henry Paulson, in response to the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the subsequent financial crisis in the fall of 2008. As a presidential candidate, Obama supported the TARP bailout, as did his GOP rival, Sen. John McCain.

Romney shared a deep sense of respect for the Bush family while glancing at the picture in the corner, which featured the faces of the former presidents, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.

"I love that picture over there of the two presidents. Father and son," Romney said as reporters were leaving the office. "What a legacy."

Thyroid Surgery Riskier for Older Patients: Study - iVillage

FRIDAY, March 30 (HealthDay News) -- Seniors who have thyroid surgery are much more likely than younger patients to suffer serious heart, lung and infection-related complications, according to a new study.

The findings challenge the widely held belief that thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) is a low-risk operation for older patients, the researchers said.

They analyzed data from 7,915 patients in the United States who had all or part of their thyroid gland removed. The risk of postoperative complications was five times higher in patients 80 and older and two times higher in patients ages 65 to 79, compared to younger patients.

The study appears in the May issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

The number of elderly patients in the United States undergoing thyroid operations is increasing due to an aging population, and rising rates of thyroid cancer and benign thyroid conditions, the researchers said.

"It is important to understand that our study emphasizes the importance of the entire medical system that cares for these elderly patients, not just the surgeon," study lead author Dr. Raymon Grogan, of the University of Chicago, said in a journal news release.

"In our study, elderly patients were susceptible to life-threatening, nonsurgical complications. Thus it is important that an elderly patient undergoing thyroid surgery have an experienced team of primary care physicians, surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses who handle these types of surgeries on a routine, daily basis," Grogan said.

• 1 cup chicken breast tenders

• 6 cups chopped, ready-to-serve?romaine lettuce

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

iHome iD50

The traditional alarm clock is going the way of the wristwatch as smartphones and speaker docks replace them. iHome offers the functionality of an alarm clock with?an AM/FM radio, a?wireless speaker, and a 30-pin dock for iPhones, iPads, and iPods. At $169.99 (direct), the iHome?iD50 is?inexpensive for a Bluetooth speaker, but its sound quality doesn't quite satisfy when compared with non-clock radio docks.

Design
Looking vaguely trapezoidal from the side, the iD50 is a matte black finish with silver edging surrounding its sides. On the front of the dock, there's a bluish LED that shows the time and date, and cloth grille covers the speakers on either side of it. The top panel holds several controls, including individual buttons for setting two alarms, setting sleep mode, starting and ending hands-free cell phone calls, and changing radio presets. The 30-pin connector also sits on the top, with a large tongue providing a stand for your iPhone or iPod. Around back, you'll find the power connector, an AM radio antenna connector, and an FM radio antenna, which is a long thin wire that runs directly out of the device's body. The thin membrane remote offers the same controls as on the dock itself, including radio playback and volume controls, and Call Answer/End buttons.

While you can dock your iOS device, Android and other smartphone and tablet users can still connect their devices via a 3.5mm auxiliary input or wirelessly over Bluetooth. Since the dock has a microphone just below the dock connector, it can work as a Bluetooth?speakerphone, whether you have an iPhone, an Android, or another Bluetooth-enabled phone.

If you have an iOS device, the iD50's clock can be automatically set just by plugging your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into the connector. iHome also offers free Internet radio and alarm apps that complement the dock. Of course, since the iD50 supports Bluetooth and has a built-in alarm you can set manually, you can use your non-Apple smartphone or tablet to play tunes or Internet radio just as easily.

Performance
Like most sub-$200 speaker docks, the sound from the iD50 isn't particularly impressive. High-end and midrange frequencies sound clear, like the opening notes to Captain Beefheart's "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles." Bass isn't quite as impressive, as our standard low-end test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," suffered very crunchy distortion in the flat bass notes, and the docked iPad rattled slightly as I turned up the volume. Obviously a Bluetooth connection will prevent the rattle, but you can't get past the mediocre, distorting bass response.

If you want a conventional, fully functional clock radio that happens to double as an iPhone and iPad dock and a Bluetooth speakerphone, the versatile iHome iD50 is hard to ignore. Its audio quality isn't good enough to be your full-time sound system, but if you want a place to handle calls, charge your iPhone, and play music to wake you up, it's a strong pick. You can certainly do better if you're willing to spend more and value audio quality more than alarm clock functions. The Editors' Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars)?is compact, puts out impressive wireless Bluetooth sound, and offers battery-powered portability, but it won't wake you up in the morning.

Bridging loans seems to be gaining in popularity. If you are planning to buy a new home prior to selling your old house, a couple of common approach to search the down payment for the move-up house is through financing a home equity loan or a bridging loan.

In general, a home equity loan is less costly, but bridging loans are comprised of more advantages for most borrowers. In addition to that, most lenders will not give it on a home equity loan if the house is on the market. However, some keen borrowers will compare the advantages between two loans to know which one fits their situation and their level of affordability and plan ahead prior to making an offer to buy another home.

What are Bridging Loans?

Bridging loan is an impermanent loan the bridges the gap between the buyer?s new mortgage, if the current home is not yet been sold and the sales price of the new home. The capital from the bridging loan will be used as down payment on the move-up home.

How does it work?

Most lenders do not have set guidelines for Debt-to-income ratios nor FICO minimums. Funding is led by a more ?make-sense? guaranteeing way. The piece of the puzzle that needs guidelines is a long-term financing attained on the new property.

Most lenders who use conforming loans do not include bridging loan payment for eligibility reasons. If the buyer?s is using a conforming loan for a new home mortgage, the lender will have more flexibility in accepting an advance debt-to-income ratio by using an automated underwriting program to run the mortgage loan. However, most lenders will limit the buyer to a fifty percent debt-to-income if the new home mortgage is a jumbo loan.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? A Montana community shaken by the kidnapping of a popular high school math teacher finally got some closure Thursday, as authorities identified a body found in neighboring North Dakota as missing teacher Sherry Arnold.

The discovery raised the possibility of new charges against two men being held for aggravated kidnapping in the case, although none were immediately filed.

The defendants also could face potential federal prosecution since Arnold's body was apparently taken across state lines.

The remains of the 43-year-old mother of two were recovered Wednesday near Williston, N.D. That's about 50 miles northeast of Sidney, the Montana town where Arnold lived and worked most of her life.

She was kidnapped at random Jan. 7 during a morning run in Sidney and choked to death, according to court documents. The two suspects were arrested a week after Arnold's disappearance. The search for her body dragged on for another two months.

Family members and those who knew Arnold had become increasingly anxious for her body to be found to bring the case to some resolution.

Arnold's sister, Rhonda Whited-Rupp, said Thursday the family was being comforted and supported by friends and others in Sidney affected by the loss of the well-known teacher.

"That's the only thing that gets anybody through. We're all in this together," Whited-Rupp said. "We just kind of hang on to one another and keep praying."

Suspects Michael Spell, 22, and Lester Van Waters Jr., 48, have pleaded not guilty to aggravated kidnapping in the case and await trial.

The FBI declined to disclose details on where the body was found or what led them to the site.

Authorities previously said Spell tried to lead FBI agents to the site in past weeks but failed. Spell is illiterate, and his father has said he has less education than a kindergartner.

The state charges against Spell and Waters can carry the death penalty if the victim is not released unharmed. A similar federal charge could also carry a death penalty upon conviction.

Court documents filed by the prosecutor in the case indicate Spell acknowledged his role in what an affidavit described as the crack-fueled abduction and killing of Arnold.

Spell told investigators he pulled her into a car and Waters choked her to death before they buried her in a shallow grave on a farmstead near Williston.

Farmers and other property owners were alerted by the FBI to be on the lookout for stirred up plots of ground or grass that might conceal a grave

There was no immediate word on when the body would be returned to Arnold's family. A date for funeral services will be set after that happens, Whited-Rupp said.

Confirmation that the remains found Wednesday were those of Arnold came after the body was taken to the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula.

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause and manner of death.

Richland County Attorney Mike Weber, who is prosecuting the case, said he was awaiting forensic results before deciding whether to file any additional charges.

While a typical autopsy can be completed in a matter of hours, DNA testing, fingerprint analyses and toxicology tests can take weeks.

A decision on whether federal charges will be filed rests with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Montana. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Fehr said the office had no immediate comment on the potential for federal involvement.

The disappearance of Arnold launched a massive search that turned up only a single running shoe that she had been wearing the day she was last seen.

She grew up on a ranch outside Sidney, a city of 5,000 near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers that's been drastically changed by a recent oil boom.

She was well-liked among Sidney High School students and their parents. She was married to a fellow public schools employee, Gary, and together they raised five children from prior marriages. Arnold's son and daughter are students at Sidney High School.
